【题目】阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Many people living in cities see riding a bicycle as good exercise. But, a recent medical 1 research warned that cyclists should think twice before cycling in the streets it actually does more harm than good 2 their bodies.

Is cycling in cities really bad for your health? Probably yes. The main danger comes from the air around you. Breathing 3 in air pollution from taxis and buses can damage blood vessels(血管).Scientists say the damage could outweigh the health benefits of cycling.

David Newby, a British 4 researcher at Edinburgh University broke the news. In his tests, 15 healthy men cycled 5 on exercise bikes in a room with levels of air pollution similar to those found 6 on a crowded city street. After an hour of cycling, the scientists found their blood vessels became less flexible and produced less of a protein(蛋白质)7 the heart needs. The damage leads to the early stages of heart disease. What's worse, the faster a cyclist pedals (蹬车),8 more air they breathe in. So those who believe 9 they are improving their fitness the most are storing up the biggest trouble for themselves 10.

【题目】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I worked from the time when I was four and raised seven children, all of them college graduates. It seemed I’d done everything I’d ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret. I was born in 1898, the oldest of five kids. Papa couldn’t spare me to go to school, so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.

Everywhere I went, I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can’t read the alphabet. People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.

By 1928, I’d been wandering for nine years. I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children, first went to school, I took my wife aside. “Elzenia,” I said. “I don’t want the kids to know I can’t read or write.”

In 1938, one day my boss called me in. “George,” he said. “No one knows those machines like you do. I’d like to promote you.” But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said, “Fill out this application and we’ll get you a raise.” I couldn’t admit the truth. I thanked him and walked out of his office. I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn’t stop working. For the next 25 years, I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.

A young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It’s information about adult education classes. People can learn to read and write. Now I’m 98. I thought of my friends and neighbours and what they might think if they found out I couldn’t read. After all these years, my secret would be out. But all my life I’ve wanted to read. It was high time for action.

【题目】 Even as a bush fire threatened the rural Australian community, Gary Wilson and his partner Julie Willis decided not to flee their wooden house.

The two had a home full of baby kangaroos to protect. More than 10 of the baby kangaroos — called joeys — stayed safe inside fabric pouches (育儿袋) that hung in the couple's living room. Each piece of cloth looked like the opening in which mother kangaroos carry their young. Wilson and Willis have taken care of wild animals before. Recently, full-grown kangaroos and other wildlife that had left their care long ago came back to the house in search of protection as the fires grew nearer. 'We had too many animals in the house and around the house so we really couldn't go, ' Wilson said. 'We decided we were going to stay and fight. ' Their home is now surrounded by burned land and vehicles.

Wilson and Willis defended their home with fire extinguishers (灭火器) and water pumps. Their house also had a special device on top that sprayed water on hot ashes falling on the roof.

Good preparation and good luck helped the building stay safe. And the animals have survived. But the fire killed two of Wilson's neighbors. 'It was a horrible thing. ' Wilson said.

Willis said, 'It's not until after the fires when it really hits you how close you were to dying... '

While Wilson and Willis usually care for joeys that are rescued after their mothers are struck by vehicles, they are now welcoming an increasing number of fire orphans.

She said, 'We didn't have children ourselves; this is what we spend our time doing. We think it's worthy — a worthy cause — looking after our babies no matter what they are... '

A newly discovered tea plant is caffeine-free

The world loves tea and some 3m tons of tea are consumed every year. Tea can be good for health, as it contains compounds that help to lower cholesterol(胆固醇)and reduce the risk of heart disease. But there is a downside. Tea contains caffeine which, 1 it improves mental alertness, can also cause anxiety, insomnia and other problems.

2 would be agreeable is that a tea plant that provides all the taste and goodness but with little or 3 of the caffeine has been found. Liang Chen and Ji-Qiang Jin of the Tea Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences have discovered just such a plant 4(grow) wild in a remote area in Fujian province, southern China. 5 they report in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, not only is the tea plant naturally caffeine-free but it also contains a number of unique medicinal compounds that, the locals believe, offer considerable health benefits.

6(know) locally as Hongyacha, the newly discovered plant grows only between 700 and 1,000 metres 7 sea level around a handful of Chinese villages.

Now the researchers 8(explore) methods to protect Hongyacha in its natural habitat while further studies are carried out. It can take time – and sometimes it does not work – for new plant varieties 9(breed) for commercial use. A pair of naturally caffeine-free coffee plants were discovered in 2003, but little progress 10(report) Tea enthusiasts will be watching Hongyacha with interest. And others will wonder what else is out there.
