【答案】Dear Jim,

I am glad to know that you have joined your school's calligraphy club. The calligraphy piece sent to you was written by myself. I really hope you will like it.

The Chinese characters on the piece are “天道酬勤”( Tian Dao Chou Qin), meaning 'Hard work pays off. ' It is a well-known Chinese idiom, widely adopted as a motto by Chinese people. There is a similar calligraphy piece hanging in the study at my home, which was written by my grandfather. He gave it to me when I started to learn calligraphy at age six in the hope that I would practise it often and learn it well. You see now my efforts have paid off. I hope it can serve as an encouragement to you at all times. I wrote this piece in the calligraphic style of my favorite calligrapher, Yan Zhenqing, a renowned master of the Tang Dynasty. His style is Kaishu, a standard script, suitable for beginners. I guess maybe it is the style that you are practising.

I know it is not easy to learn Chinese calligraphy. If you have any problems during your study, I would be happy to help you. I sincerely hope you enjoy learning Chinese calligraphy.

Yours

LiHua

【题目】How to Give Directions

Whether you’re telling someone how to get your house or guiding a stranger to a local museum, you should know how to give good directions.

1. Explain the route based on where the person is coming from. Before you start giving directions, you need to ask the person where exactly they’re coming from. 1

2. Give the simplest route. While it may seem attractive to give directions to your favorite shortcut, this could wind up doing more harm than good. Instead, give the simplest directions that are least likely to confuse the person.2

3. Share the safest route. If there are several routes and some of them are especially dangerous, give the safest route. 3 Whether it’s narrow road or a high crime neighborhood, take threats to the person’s safety into consideration.

4. 4 Otherwise, you may give incorrect directions that could get the person lost. Give directions for routes that you’ve taken many times, rather than trying to describe a shortcut or another route you don’t know as well.

5. Warn the person about confusing parts of the route. If there is a confusing part of the route you’re providing, tell the person about it very carefully. 5 Some points of confusion could include roads with little notice and turns that are very slight.

A.Create a map of the route and share it.

B.Don’t suggest routes you haven’t taken.

C.Besides, tell them when to expert the confusing part.

D.As your directions will depend on which way they are headed.

E.Don’t use words, phrases or names which only the locals know.

F.This way, you’ll decrease: the chance of the person’s getting last.

G.As the person you’re advising won’t know the dangers they’ll be driving through.

【题目】Saving Money on Holiday Travel

The holiday season isn’t just about shopping and gifts. 1 However, holiday travel can get expensive fast faster than you can imagine. Fortunately, the following tips will help you keep your travel spending under control.

Plan ahead. The earlier you book your travel, from flights to hotels, the easier it is to find good deals.2 In fact, many experts point out that you should book travel about one to three months earlier so that you can have more opportunities to find the best deals and you know what you will be doing.

Book your air travel on cheaper days. Travelling by air on Tuesdays and Wednesdays often costs less than travelling on Fridays and Sundays. During the holidays, though, it’s not just about a specific day of the week.3 Days immediately before and after a holiday can be expensive. If you can adjust your plans so that you can travel on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, you might be able to find an even better deal.

Consider travelling overnight. Overnight flights often cost less than those at more convenient times.4 Depending on where you are going, and the options of how to get there, overnight travel can help you avoid a night in the hotel, as well as save your money on travel to your destination.

5 You can’t bring liquids with you on the plane, but you can bring sandwiches and other snacks. When you’re on the road, you can buy food at local groceries to make your own meals. If you are staying in a hotel for a long time, consider cooking your own food, especially if you have access to a microwave.

A. Bring your own food.

B. Consider affordable accommodations.

C. Booking earlier can also save your money.

D. If you are flying, consider alternative airports.

E. You also need to consider the days surrounding the holiday.

F. A great deal of travel also takes place during this time of the year.

G. Other alternatives include sleeper trains, as well as overnight ferries.
