Years later£¬when I stood in the kitchen of my new house£¬thinking how I wanted to make my£¨48£©BChristmas there special and memorable£¬I£¨49£©Bremembered the women's visit£®I decided that I wanted to create that same feeling of£¨50£©Cfor as many children as I could possibly reach£®
So I£¨51£©Ca plan and gathered forty people from my company to help£®We gathered about 125orphans £¨¹Â¶ù£© at the Christmas party£®For every child£¬we wrapped colorful packages filled with toys£¬clothes£¬and school supplies£¬£¨52£©Dwith a child's name£®We wanted all of them to know they were£¨53£©BBefore I called out their names and handed them their gifts£¬I£¨54£©Athem that they couldn't open their presents£¨55£©Bevery child had come forward£®Finally the£¨56£©Cthey had been waiting for came as I called out£¬"One£¬two£¬three£®Open your presents!"As the children opened their packages£¬their faces beamed and their bright smiles£¨57£©Aup the room£®The£¨58£©Din the room was obvious£¬and£¨59£©Awasn't just about toys£®It was a feeling-the feeling I knew£¨60£©Dthat Christmas so long ago when the women came to visit£®I wasn't forgotten£®Somebody thought of me£®I matter£®

Mother was right£¬£¨38£©A I discovered after £¨39£©A from college in 1932£®I had decided to try for a job in radio£¬then work my way £¨40£©D sports announcer£®I hitchhiked£¨´î±ã³µ£© to Chicago and knocked on the door of£¨41£©A station-and got £¨42£©C every time£®In one £¨43£©C£¬a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't £¨44£©B hiring inexperienced persons£®"Go out in the sticks and find a small station that'll give you a£¨45£©A£®"she said£®
I thumbed home to Dixon£¬Illinois£®While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon£¬my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local £¨46£©B to manage its sports department£®Since Dixon was where I had played high school football£¬I £¨47£©B£®The job sounded just right for me£®£¨48£©AI wasn't hired£®
My disappointment must have shown£®"Everything happens for the best£¬"Mom£¨49£©Ame£®Dad£¨50£©D me the car to job-hunt£®I tried WOC Radio in Davenport£¬Iowa£®The program director£¬a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur£¬told me they had £¨51£©Chired an announcer£®
As I left his office£¬my £¨52£©B boiled over£®I asked aloud£¬"How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station£¿"I was waiting for the elevator £¨53£©C I heard MacArthur calling£¬"What was that you said about sports£¿Do you know anything about football£¿"Then he stood next to me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an£¨54£©B game£®
On my way home£¬as I have many times since£¬I thought of my mother's words£º"if you carry on£¬one day something good will happen£®Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment"£®I often£¨55£©D what direction my life might have taken if I'd gotten the job at Montgomery Ward£®
