I, together with my two friends, were eating dinner at a Chinese restaurant, located in the center of New York. I noticed the young woman eating with two kids. We stop by and I asked the kids if he believed in Santa. The elder boy, whom was about seven years old, pointed his younger sister and said, “She does, but I don’t. ”I told them Santa was real and as we were paying for our dinner, I paid for theirs, either. Why Blue LED Lights Won the Nobel

The 2014 Nobel Prize in physics went to three scientists who gave lighting a big change by inventing blue LED lights. A big change in lighting efficiency is under way around the world.

Save and green

LEDs use less energy than other forms of lighting. A typical LED bulb(灯泡) can produce around 83 lumens per watt — a measure of how much brightness you can get from a unit of electrical power — much more efficient than other lighting facilities.

LEDs produce light by passing electric current through a semiconductor, while traditional bulbs pass current through a wire. The wasted heat energy is chiefly why traditional bulbs are so much less efficient.

LEDs also last about 30 times longer than traditional bulbs, and many LED bulb products promise up to 25,000 hours of use — more than 17 years if you used one for about four hours a day.

Lighting the world

The lighting transformation is not only in homes. LEDs are also being used for street lights, public holiday and decorative displays, commercial buildings, and other large energy users.

Car lighting is another application where LEDs are making progress. LEDs used to be used only for daytime running lights, but now many new cars have LED headlights for night-time use.

LEDs also hold promise for bringing light to the more than 1.5 billion people around the world without access to electricity, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences noted. Indeed, several proposed solutions to energy poverty include the distribution of LED lights, particularly solar-powered ones.

Digital displays

Without blue LEDs, the world wouldn’t have back-lit smart phones, TV and computer LCD screens, blu-ray(蓝光) players, many forms of lighting, and countless other products.

In the electronics industry, LEDs provide back lighting for LCD screens in many smart phones, laptops, and televisions. The LEDs are more energy efficient and allow for very thin displays.

Blu-ray players use blue LED lasers(激光) to read data off a digital optical disc. When these systems switched from using an infrared(红外线) laser to a blue LED laser, it became possible to store five to 10 times as much data.

LEDs are now being explored for their potential uses to transmit(传送) data from the Internet across open space, similar to WiFi. Such a system could transmit a lot more data than WiFi alone. This high bandwidth is possible because LEDs can turn on and off millions of times per second.

The rise of LED lighting came at a time when people were just starting to be concerned about global warming. Because of LEDs’ energy efficiency, using them for the world’s lighting would affect environmental protection in a positive way.

Why Blue LED Lights Won the Nobel

The reason why blue LED lights won the 2014 Nobel Prize in physics is that they are to 1______ in big changes in lighting.

Save and green

2_______ with other forms of lighting, LEDs are much more efficient because of the different ways they pass electric current.

What’s more, LED bulbs can be 3_______ 30 times longer than traditional bulbs.

Lighting the world

4_______ from household applications of LED bulbs, they can also be used as street lights and car headlights.

Because of their high efficiency, LEDs, especially solar-powered ones, 5_______ to light areas without access to electricity.

Digital displays

Many smart phones, laptops and televisions use LEDs to back-light their LCD6_______.

By using blue LED lasers, blu-ray players are likely to store 7________ data.

People are now exploring more 8_______ uses of LEDs such as transmitting data.

9_______

LED lighting will have a positive 10________ on environmental protection.

【题目】根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多余选项。

__【1】___You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. ___2____A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what happens to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, mobile phones, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class. ___3_____Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. ___4___ If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.

___5____ You will probably discover them after you have tried these.

A. There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

B. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

C. Take advantage of class time to listen to what the teacher says.

D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

E. Maybe you are a common student.

G. This will help you understand the next class.

【题目】Robinson Crusoe is a famous novel written by Daniel Defoe. The book tells the story of a man who is shipwrecked (遭遇海难的). He spends 28 years on an island near Venezuela. The book tells the story of everything that happens to Robinson Crusoe. He hopes someone will rescue him, but he has been there for so long on his own that he also begins to fear being rescued.

Robinson Crusoe was published in 1719. Most experts believe the story is based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, who was a Scottish sailor. On an expedition (探险) in 1704, Selkirk had an argument with his ship’s captain. Selkirk thought the ship was not safe and was about to fall apart.

When the ship stopped at a remote island to get fresh water, Selkirk got off. He tried to get the other crew members to leave with him, but nobody would. The shop then sailed away without him. Selkirk spent four years and four months on his own on the island, known as Aguas Buenas.

Selkirk was finally rescued by a ship that visited the island in 1709. The ship’s captain was grateful to Selkirk because he provided food for the crew when they arrived.

Now archaeologists think they have found the remains of Selkirk’s camp on Aguas Buenas. They found two deep holes that would have held wooden posts. The archaeologists say this is evidence that Selkirk built a shelter there. The post holes are near a fresh water stream. They are located quite high up, which would have meant that Selkirk was able to watch out for the ships coming close to the island.

The most interesting evidence, the archaeologists say, is part of a piece of equipment used by sailors to navigate (导航). Historians believe Selkirk was a navigator, so the instrument could have belonged to him.

Robinson Crusoe was published ten years after Selkirk was rescued. Most experts think Daniel Defoe heard and read stories about Selkirk, which inspired him to write the book.

1Why did Selkirk choose to land on the remote island?

A. Because he had quarrels with the crew members.

B. Because the captain ordered him to get fresh water.

C. Because he wanted to go on an adventure there.

D. Because he thought the ship he was on was in danger.

2We can infer from the text that the ship that visited Aguas Buenas in 1709 _______.

A. lost its way while sailing

B. lacked fresh water upon arrival

C. was being navigated by Selkirk

D. was running out of food upon arrival

3How could Selkirk see ships that might rescue him, according to archaeologists?

A. By asking the crew members on the ships.

B. By sending messages to the ships’ captains.

C. By watching from his shelter high on the island.

D. By using a piece of equipment used to navigate.

4The author wrote the text to _______.

A. explain the origin of Robinson Crusoe

B. promote sales to Robinson Crusoe

C. criticise Alexander Selkrik’s deeds

D. praise Daniel Defoe for his writing inspiration
