M: My name is Steven. And I come from the North of England.

W: Oh, really! Where in the North of England?

M: A small village called Gawsworth.

W: Mm-hm. Is it a big place?

M: No.

W: Do you go back there often?

M: Not so often. The last time I went back was Christmas.

W: Oh, really! OK. Did you have a good time?

M: Yeah, it was very nice. I saw old friends and family and did the usual Christmas things.

W: What actually are the usual Christmas things?

M: Oh, I guess, uh, a lot of eating and a lot of drinking and a lot of laughing. Just general fun and games I guess.

W: How many of your family members still live in the village?

M: Well … my mom and dad live in the village … um, my brother and sister actually live in the town, pretty close to the village, so my family is all in that general area.

W: Oh, OK. Thanks a lot, Steven.

【题目】 You're probably used to the regular upgrades in our cell-phone networks. There was 2G, which came along in 199l, replaced with 3G in 2001, followed by 4G in 2009. Now we're hearing about the coming of 5G.

But 5G is a much bigger leap than before. 5G, of course, is much faster than 4G in the real world and a 5G phone in a 5G city will enjoy Internet speeds between 9 and 20 times as fast. The arrival of 5G also means enormous leaps forward in capacityso much that every cell-phone plan will offer cheap, truly unlimited Internet access. “The consequences of that are huge,” says Sherif Hanna, Qualcomm's director of 5G marketing. For example, apps will no longer degrade (降低) your video quality or postpone downloading when you're out of Wi-Fi range. In fact, you'll probably prefer to do your downloads when you're on cellular (使用流量) because 5G will be much faster than whatever service you've got at home or work.

“However, not everyone is excited by the 5G development. The new standard gets its speed partly by using existing transmission(传输) frequencies more efficiently and partly by using the millimeter wave range. That's a big, juicy line of radio frequencies that are currently underused because millimeter wave is really hard to use,” Hanna says.

These frequencies are much higher than anything we've used for the cellular, which means they can offer unbelievable speedbut at the cost of range. Millimeter wave cellular towers have to be about 500 feet apart. Cell carriers not only will have to upgrade all their cell transceivers (called small cells) but will install(安装) a lot more of them as well.

That's why the millimeter wave flavor of 5G, the superfast coverage, will be available only in densely populated cities such as New York and San Francisco. In suburban and rural areas, 5G will bring a speedup of “only” nine times faster.

1What advantages does 5G have over previous networks?

A.5G is much faster and more convenient.

B.5G allows users to download more videos.

C.5G can provide better service and news at home.

D.5G cell-phone plans are expensive but more accessible.

2Hanna's words in paragraph 3 reflect .

A.popularity of the coming of 5G

B.easy access to the 5G development

C.concern about the 5G development

D.excitement about the 5G development

3What can we learn about 5G according to the text?

A.It requires more cellular towers.

B.It won't be available in rural areas.

C.It won't show speed improvements in suburbs.

D.It makes some populated cities even more crowded.

4Where is the text most likely from?

A.A tour brochure.B.A science newspaper.

C.A medical magazine.D.An experimental textbook.

Fearmongering(散布恐慌)against China more dangerous to global economy than coronavirus(冠状病毒)

After weeks of attempting to sow chaos and spread fear about the outbreak of the novel coronavirus epidemic(流行病)in China, some overseas media outlets and individuals have shifted focus 1 another battlefield-the Chinese economy. They paint a rather dark picture not just for the Chinese economy 2. for the global economy.3(they)articles are filled with scary headlines and exaggerated facts.People cannot help 4(panic)about the global economy. which is already facing serious challenges like trade wars. 5it comes to”causing”such a mess for the world,it is easy to point fingers at China.

Anyway, these media outlets are right about a couple of things.First, the epidemic will make the Chinese economy suffer a little. After all, consumers across the country are 6(trap)in their homes and businesses and factories have been shut for a good part of this year,Second,we have to be fully aware of these challenges and risks in order to address the problem. The first step to solve a problem is 7(recognize)there is one.

Actually,Chinese officials have been very clear about the potential impact of the epidemic on the economy. Why 8(will)they invest hundreds of billions of dollars into the economy if they weren’t aware of the problem? Why would they roll out a great number of measures to support businesses? Why would they take extraordinary risks in encouraging factories to restart 9(produce)?

10 of how severe the impact will be,the epidemic does not change the fundamentals of the Chinese economy. The outbreak is surely to be contained. It can be safe to say that fearmongering against China is more dangerous to global economy than coronavirus.

He fascinated Victorian England with his 1 skill at cracking cases, based on astute (机敏的) logical reasoning and grasp of forensic science, not to mention a 2 of disguises and encyclopedic knowledge of the criminal underclass.

But this detective was not Sherlock Holmes but a real life investigator, Jerome Caminada, who, as a new research suggests, helped inspire Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s celebrated hero.

A biography of Caminada reveals a series of 3 similarities between him and the fictional character, in terms of their unorthodox methods and character. It also establishes strong 4 between the real detective’s cases and plot lines used by Doyle. The author, Angela Buckley, has even established that Caminada’s casework involved 5 an alluring (迷人的) and talented criminal, similar to Irene Adler, and that the detective even had a Moriarty-like nemesis who plagued him over the course of several cases until a final, dramatic confrontation. Mrs. Buckley said, “Caminada became a national figure at just the time that Sherlock Holmes was being created. There are so many parallels that it is clear Doyle was using parts of this real 6 for his.”

The son of an Italian father and Irish mother, Caminada was based in Manchester, but was involved in cases which took him across the country, and he enjoyed a nationwide profile in the press, where 7 of his exploits were widely reported. Most of his career was spent with Manchester City Police Force although he later 8, like Holmes, as a “consulting detective”. As the fictional character relied on a network of underworld contacts — the Baker Street Irregulars — so Caminada was known for his extensive web of 9, whom he would often meet in the back pew of a church. These characters helped him build up an encyclopedic knowledge of the criminal fraternity, among whom he would often move in disguise—another tactic in common with Holmes. Like his fictional counterpart, Caminada was noted for his tendency to wander the streets of the roughest neighborhoods alone at night, 10 intervening in any crimes he encountered.

【题目】 A youth soccer coach, Hugo Grejada, director of Pro Youth Soccer academy in Chester, New York, shares some tips to help you improve your soccer skills.

Start with basic drills. "Go outdoors, get a ball, and keep it close to your feet," Grejada says, "1If you have a backyard, work on shooting."

2 "It’s a good way of building skills without having the pressure of games. Choose camps that emphasize building skills and go to one of those. There are plenty of camps that begin right after school ends."

Don’t forget to stretch. 3Then do a series of stretches to loosen up your muscles. Don’t forget to take a drink of water before you even step on the field. "Water is important especially in summer, " Grejada says.

Watch the World Cup. Grejada tells his athletes to watch as many games as they can. 4Then, you should try to bring some of their moves into your own game. "Pick up something that you like and practice it, " Grejada says.

Keep practicing. Practice may not seem like the most fun part playing soccer. 5Look for ways to make practice fun by adding some competition to simple drills, and don’t be discouraged if it takes time to master new skills. "If someone was struggling to improve, I would tell him to keep practicing, keep trying. Practice makes perfect."

A. Sign up for a soccer camp.

B. Reduce the pressure of games.

C. However, it’s the best way to develop skills.

D. Study how the best players move with the ball.

E. A game is sometimes used as an educational tool.

F. That will help improve your ability to run with the ball close to you.

G. Before each game or practice, start with a proper ten-minute warm-up.
