Height is just one of the thousands of features (特征) that your genes (基因) decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then maybe you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you’re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don’t decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential (潜力). Getting enough sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the right height.
No doubt you’re wondering how fast you should grow. There’s no perfect or right answer. Kids grow about 2 inches (5 centimetres) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty (when your body starts changing and becoming more grown up).
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimetres here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you’re at now, how you’ve been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.
Don’t be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a very quick growth during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later – between 7 and 13 for girls, 9 and 15 for boys.
You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.

Worries about school bus safety have drawn much attention. Now schools in some poor areas are looking   41  some other ways to go to school.

Have you felt annoyed when a cell phone (手机)rings during the class? Something must be done to stop this. Now in New York City, USA, a rule is carried out(执行) in schools. Students can’t even bring cell phones to school. Is it a good thing or not?
Anxious(焦虑的) parents say that cell phones are an important tool in holding New York City’s families together.
“I worry about it,” said Elizabeth Lorris Ritter, a mother of a middle school kid. “It’s necessary in our everyday life. We have a washing machine, we have running water, and we have cell phones.”
A number of Americans think cell phones connect them to children on buses, getting out from subways, walking through unknown places.
“I have her call me when she gets out school,” said Lindsay Walt, a schoolgirl’s mother. “No one in New York is going to let their children go to school without a cell phone.
What about the cell phone owners, the students? Most of the students said that cell phones were necessary and the cell phone was like an extra(额外的)hand or foot for them.
“I feel so empty,” said May Chom, 14. “There is also no way to listen to music on the way to school without my phone. It will be a really, really boring trip.”

A study finds that not enough morning light causes teenagers not to get enough sleep at night. “As teenagers spend more time indoors, they miss necessary morning light. Day light is needed to keep the balance of the body’s 24-hour biological system (生物系统), which regulates (调节) body temperature and sleep styles,” reports Dr. Mariana Figueiro. “These teenagers who receive little morning light are going to bed later, getting less sleep and doing badly in tests. They are more likely to fail in their exams.”
In the study, Dr. Figueiro asked 11 students in Grade 8 to wear special glasses to prevent blue morning light from reaching their eyes. At the end of the 5-day study she found that they fell asleep 30 minutes later than usual.
Throughout her research, Dr. Figueiro has been very worried about teenagers going to bed too late. The problem is that today’s schools require teenagers to be in school very early in the morning. These students are likely to miss the morning light because they often go to school before the sun is up or as it’s just rising.
Furthermore (此外), the schools are not likely to provide enough electric light to keep the balance of this biological system. Our biological system is much more sensitive (敏感的) to blue light. Therefore, having lots of light in the classroom does not make sure that there is enough light to keep our biological system balanced.
