Life is important. You should always have fun and new experiences, because you never know what day will be your last. You shouldn’t hold anger. You never know what could happen next. I learn all this at the age of nine.
It was the summer before fifth grade. My best friend Nessa and I were playing. We got angry with each other and had a fight. My older cousin, Tiffany, broke up our fight. I remember Nessa storming out of my grandmother’s house saying, “ I hope we never speak again !”
I replied, “good, I don’t need you as a friend!”
I went into the house and tried to be quiet. Then I heard people shouting outside. My cousin rushed in. she said that Nessa had been hit by a street truck as she crossed the road. The driver didn’t see her. I felt sad. I wished it had been me instead. It could have been avoided if we hadn’t had that fight!
When the ambulance救护车arrived a few minutes later, they said she was dead. I was a real mess. I had to see a psychologist心理医生for the rest of the summer.
I miss Nessa so much and I think of her always. She taught me how valuable and important life is and that you should never hold anger because you never know when you’ll see that person again.

Our father had gone on November 26, and this was our        Christmas without him. Mother was doing her best to be good, but I could tell this was especially       for her. I’m not sure       I should give her my planned Christmas gift.
A few months earlier I had painted two pictures of my parents. I’d planned to give them as       gifts.
While painting one day, I was surprised by the doorbell ringing. I opened the      . My father came. I showed       the paintings. Finally, with tears running down his face, he said, “I don’t believe it. Look, how beautiful your mother is. Will you let me decorate them with frames(边框)?” I       offered to send them to the frame shop the next day.
Several        had passed after my dad died. It seemed all        was taken away from my mother and me. I finally remembered to call about the paintings and was glad that my father had got a chance to see the pictures       he died. I was surprised when the shopkeeper told me my father had visited the shop,        the frames and had them wrapped.
As I        my mother’s sad eyes and unsmiling face, I        to give her Daddy’s and my gift.
After looking at the paintings and the card, with tear-filled eyes and a wide smile, she said, “ I knew Daddy would be     us on Christmas Day!”

Once I spoke at a high school. After the speech, the principal asked me to see a special student. An          had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him. I agreed.
He was Matthew.          he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, then they were told            would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal weight lifter.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. He spoke about            and succeeding and seeking(追寻)his dreams.
When we finished talking, I went to my         and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about                     and overcoming obstacles(克服障碍)than I ever would. He looked at it for a while, then took it off and handed it          to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”
Last summer I got the news that Matthew had         and a letter Matthew had written to me a few days before:
Dear Rick,
My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter. The doctors are         to tell me that I don't have long to live any more. But I still smile as much as I can.
I told you that in the future I was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I'll         . I know I'm a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you.
Thank you for loving me.
Your friend
Matthew

That day was like any other day in his life. After school Michael walked past the shop in the street corner. He stopped to          some shoes, and he felt sorry for himself. He        wanted to have a pair of shoes for his birthday. He walked away sadly and thought of what to tell his mother. He knew she would give him        if she could. But he also knew very well she had          money. He decided not to go home         , as he looked worried and his mother would notice it. So he went to the park and sat down on the grass. Then he saw a boy in a wheel chair. He noticed that the boy moved the wheels with his hands. Michael looked at him carefully and was            to see that the boy had no feet. He looked         at his own feet. “It is        better to be without shoes than        feet.” he thought. There was no reason for him to         so sorry and sad. He went away and smiled, thinking he was more lucky in his life.

The grandfather said,“      me tell you a story. When I was a boy, I too, sometimes hated others for what they did.”
As Peter         carefully, the grandfather went on.“There are always two tigers inside my heart. One is        and kind. He gets on well       everything around him. But       is bad and unfriendly. Peter looked into his grandfather’s         and asked,“      tiger always controls you, Grandfather?”
The old man said slowly and seriously,“The one that I feed. I always feed the good and kind tiger, so I never hate others and seldom(很少)get angry now.”

Every Saturday, Grandpa and I walk to the nursing home to visit some of the old and sick people there because they can’t take care of themselves.   First we visit Mrs. Sokol. I call her “The Cook.” She likes to talk about the time when she was a well-known cook in Russia. People would come from miles, just to taste her chicken soup. Next we visit Mr. Lipman. I call him “The Singer” because he loves to sing for us. Whenever he does, his voice fills the air, clear and full of energy. I also enjoy Mrs. Kagan’s stories about her own experiences during the old days. I call her “The Memory Lady.”
One day Grandpa got very sick and the doctor said they didn’t think he would get better.
It was time to visit the nursing home again. I had to go alone. Everyone was surprised when I told them that my grandpa was ill and in hospital.
A few days later, Grandpa was not able to sit up, eat and even speak. I went to the corner of the room so Grandpa wouldn’t see me cry. Suddenly, I heard someone singing. I looked up. It was The Singer. Behind her were The Cook. and The Memory Lady. The Cook brought her famous homemade chicken soup. The Memory Lady held Grandpa’s hand and told us how Grandpa once came to visit her in a snowstorm, just to bring her some roses for her birthday.
Before I realized it, visiting hours were up. That evening, Grandpa called the nurse in and said he was hungry. Soon he began to sit up. Finally he was able to get out of bed. It is really a miracle (surprising event), isn’t it?

Then the next day I drove to my car with gas. There is a lack(缺乏)gas (汽油)now and many gasoline stations were either closed or had very      lines. I got worried, since I was behind 15 cars. Finally, when it was my , the man smiled and said, “ this situation, we are only giving $ 30 worth gas per person. Is that alright?” “Of course, I’m just glad that we are all able to  ,” I said. His smile gave me so much comfort.
I saw a man at the evacuation(疏散) center       when people brought food to him, It was the first time in three days that food has been brought to their center. However, after he wiped the tears, his next    surprised me. “I am very     that we are provided with food. But people in the city next to us haven’t       any food at all. Please go to that centre as well.” And when hearing that, I realized there is a bright future on the other side of this     .
