题目内容

On last Christmas Day, our parents’ home was full of joys of a close family relationship but this year things are     . Our father had gone on November 26, and this was our        Christmas without him. Mother was doing her best to be good, but I could tell this was especially       for her. I’m not sure       I should give her my planned Christmas gift.
A few months earlier I had painted two pictures of my parents. I’d planned to give them as       gifts.
While painting one day, I was surprised by the doorbell ringing. I opened the      . My father came. I showed       the paintings. Finally, with tears running down his face, he said, “I don’t believe it. Look, how beautiful your mother is. Will you let me decorate them with frames(边框)?” I       offered to send them to the frame shop the next day.
Several        had passed after my dad died. It seemed all        was taken away from my mother and me. I finally remembered to call about the paintings and was glad that my father had got a chance to see the pictures       he died. I was surprised when the shopkeeper told me my father had visited the shop,        the frames and had them wrapped.
As I        my mother’s sad eyes and unsmiling face, I        to give her Daddy’s and my gift.
After looking at the paintings and the card, with tear-filled eyes and a wide smile, she said, “ I knew Daddy would be     us on Christmas Day!”
I looked at the gift card with my father’s handwriting. “ Mother: Our daughter reminded me why I am so lucky. I’ll be looking at you always. Daddy.”

Fred Astaire was born in Nebraska in 1899. Fred and his sister, Adele, learned to dance when they were very young. Their mother took them to New York to study dance. They performed in their first professional(专业的) show when Fred was ten years old and Adele was twelve. Later, as teenagers, the two danced in many shows throughout the United States. Their first big success was on Broadway in 1917.
The Astaires -- as they were known -- quickly became Broadway stars. During the nineteen twenties, they sang and danced in eleven different shows. They also performed in England. In 1932, Adele Astaire married a British man, and stopped performing. But Fred did not forego his dream. He would go on alone, in the movies.
Fred Astaire had the best skill among all dancers in history. He danced up walls and on the ceiling in the film Royal Wedding. He danced on rooftops in The Belle of New York. He danced on roller skates in Shall We Dance?
Fred Astaire made all this look easy. But it was not. He said: "Dancing is a sweaty job. You cannot just sit down and do it. You have to get up on your feet. It takes time to get a dance right, to create something memorable. I always try to get to know my dance so well that I do not have to think.”
In 1949, Fred Astaire won a special award for his film work from America's Motion Picture Academy. He also won awards from the television industry for a number of his television programs.
Fred stopped dancing in 1970. He was more than seventy years old at the time. He said a dancer could not continue dancing forever. He said he did not want to disappoint(使失望) anyone, even himself. He danced again in public only once after that. It was with another great male dancer, Gene Kelly, in the movie "That's Entertainment, Part Two".
Fred Astaire and his first wife, Phyllis, had three children. Phyllis died in 1954. Twenty-five years later, Fred married race horse rider Robyn Smith. Fred Astaire died on June 22, 1987. He was eighty-eight years old. He was called the greatest dancer in the world. His dancing was called perfect. And moviegoers everywhere will remember him as a great performer whose work will live forever in his films.

Life is important. You should always have fun and new experiences, because you never know what day will be your last. You shouldn’t hold anger. You never know what could happen next. I learn all this at the age of nine.
It was the summer before fifth grade. My best friend Nessa and I were playing. We got angry with each other and had a fight. My older cousin, Tiffany, broke up our fight. I remember Nessa storming out of my grandmother’s house saying, “ I hope we never speak again !”
I replied, “good, I don’t need you as a friend!”
I went into the house and tried to be quiet. Then I heard people shouting outside. My cousin rushed in. she said that Nessa had been hit by a street truck as she crossed the road. The driver didn’t see her. I felt sad. I wished it had been me instead. It could have been avoided if we hadn’t had that fight!
When the ambulance救护车arrived a few minutes later, they said she was dead. I was a real mess. I had to see a psychologist心理医生for the rest of the summer.

This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. As I searched the name, I found that there were two famous people having the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts(花生), while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; let the coin decide. I flipped(掷) a coin and Ah! Tails (背面)! My report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, I stood in front of the classroom and proudly read my homework. But things started to get strange. I looked around the room, only to find my classmates with big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes and my stone-faced teacher. I was completely lost. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”
Oh well, I dropped the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American War of Independence.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that my teacher meant that George Washington?
Of course, my subject result was awful. Sad but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to the headmaster Miss Lancelot, but she said firmly: No re-dos; no new score. I felt that it was not fair, and I believed I deserved a second chance. So I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, I sat in the headmaster’s office again, but this time a completely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the terrible moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster told me I was good enough to skip(跳过) the 6th grade and started the 7th grade next term.
