Our village carpenter (木匠) , John, came one day and made a dining table for my wife. He made it just the right size for the space between the two windows. When I got home that evening, John was drinking a cup of tea and writing out his bill for the job.
My wife said to me quietly,“That’s his ninth cup of tea today. ”But she said, in a loud voice,“It’s a beautiful table, dear, isn’t it?”
“I’ll decide about that when I see the bill. ”I said.
John laughed and gave me his bill for the work. I read:
One dining table                        10 November, 1998
Cost of wood                            $17. 00
Paint                                   $1. 50
Work, 8 hours ( $1 an hour )            $8. 00
Total                                   $36. 50
When I was looking at the bill, John said, “It’s been a nice day, hasn’t it?Quite sunny. ”
“Yes. ”I said. “ I’m glad it’s only the tenth of November. ”
“Me, too. ”said John. “You wait — it’ll be a lot colder by the end of the month. ”
“Yes,colder — and more expensive! A dining table will be $20 more expensive on November 30, won’t it, John?”
John looked hard at me for half a minute. Was there a little smile in his two blue eyes?I gave his bill back to him.
“If there isn’t too much trouble, John,” I said,“please add it up again. You can forget the date…”
I paid him $26. 50 and he was happy to get it.

Dragons can be friendly or fierce (凶狠), they can bring good luck or cause death, but one  thing is sure——people  talk about  them almost everywhere in the world.
In Chinese culture, dragons are generous and wise, although  they can be unpredictable. The dragon was closely connected  to  the royal  family: the emperor's robes (礼袍) have a symbol of a gold dragon with five claws. According  to popular belief,  if you were born  in  the year of the dragon, you are intelligent, brave, and a natural leader.
But in the west, dragons had a different reputation (名声). The very first text in English, the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, tells the story of a Scandinavian hero, Beowulf, who fights and kills a dangerous dragon but is himself killed in the fight. However, across the border in Wales, the red dragon which appears on the Welsh flag is a positive symbol, indicating strength and a sense of national identity.
Why should  the dragon have a different character  in different parts of  the world? Some experts believe it is due to the animals that the myths grew out of.  In the west, the  idea of  the dragon probably came  from  the snake—an animal which people hated and were afraid of.
But in China, the idea of the dragon may have come from  the alligator--a shy animal which lives in rivers, but which  is usually only seen when  there  is plenty of water--a good sign for agriculture(农业). So the Chinese dragon was a bringer of good fortune.

It began a year ago, around Christmas. Every time I drove down our street, I      an old man sitting in his front yard. He was usually smoking or drinking, and looking rather unhappy.
One day, while I was driving past him with my        , I decided to wave at him with a lot of excitement.      , when he noticed me waving at him, he looked a bit shocked. Then, I saw his hand go up and he waved back.
did you wave at him?” my daughter asked.
I told her it’s just an act of kindness that doesn’t        anything. It gives both him and me a feeling of joy. My daughter replied that she felt a bit uncomfortable to wave to a        , but next time she would try it as well.
We liked close to the old man,       we saw him rather often. Whenever we drove by, both of us would start waving at him and, pretty soon, the old man started         at everyone who passed by his house.
One time, my daughter’s friend came to visit and she told my daughter that she saw this strange old man near our home wave at her very        . She mentioned that she waved back, although she didn’t know        , and it felt really good.
As soon as my daughter heard this, she told her friend the        of how all the waving began. Her friend answered: “Tell your mom that’s really cool!”
Other friends gave similar        . This taught my daughter that an act of kindness can be natural and        , if you really want to do it. It showed us how giving happiness can do good to        the giver and the receiver.
Moved by the old man’s actions, we’re planning to give our waving neighbor a thank-you card to express our        for his exciting waves. We are really thankful for him sharing his simple joy with all who pass by his house.

In the city of Chicago I met a man I will never forget. He drove a bus that ran from downtown to the edge of the city. Each night I watched him. As the passengers got on the bus, he smiled at each one. It was fun to see how many passengers forgot their troubles and smiled back.
There was one passenger, I noticed, that had never smiled back. He usually coughed roughly through his mustache (胡子) as he got on the bus. And he never covered his mouth. But that wasn’t enough to stop the bus driver’s smile. He gave the man with the mustache and the rough cough his biggest smile.
The man with the mustache never seemed to see that smile. He would sit on the edge of his seat and complained about the way that the bus driver was driving. He only complained for a short time, but he spoke loudly enough so everybody could hear. It was enough to make me sick. But the driver never said a word. He just went on smiling at passengers as they got on the bus.
I wanted to get to know this bus driver better. One night I stayed on the bus to the end of the line. I asked the driver, “Why don’t you throw that man with the mustache out of the bus?” The bus driver looked at me and gave me one of his famous smiles. “I don’t care about that,” he said. “Let me tell you about my friend’s dog. The man next door to me has a dog. Every time the moon shines, the dog barks (狗叫) and barks all night.” “Well, what about the dog and the moon?” I asked. “Oh, the moon keeps on shining,” he said.

I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare and the tortoise. At the end I said, “Son, remember: Be slow and steady, and that will win the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”
Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”
I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!”
“He must wish that already,” Sonny said, “Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”
“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “He won the race by pushing on steadily.”
Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare didn’t happen to fall asleep, the tortoise would never win the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never win the race. That’s for sure.”
I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless.
