Though there are so many passages about positive thinking, few people really understand what it is. Being positive doesn’t mean ignoring (忽视) what is happening around us. If someone is going through problems or living in a difficult situation, we cannot expect him to ignore his problems and start thinking positively right away.
It is easier to think positively when we are in a comfortable situation, rather than a bad situation. We cannot think positively when we have problems, unless we are trained to. No one can speak a foreign language before studying and practicing for some time. The same thing is true about being positive. However, saying that everything is going to be all right, smiling for no reason, or ignoring problems without trying to solve them, is not being positive. It is daydreaming.
Positive people expect the best and believe that a bad situation will be improved, but they are also practical (明智的) people. They look for opportunities and solutions instead of doing nothing. They can improve a bad situation with a positive attitude. They can not only keep thinking of the problem that they face, but they can also refuse to let the problem affect their mind too much.
Positive thinking is being hopeful, and hope brings light and happiness into our life. One can just live with a bad attitude, or one can try to do one’s best in a bad situation. It is a matter of choice.

It was the first day of school. I had a new classmate, a little old lady with a warm smile.
She said, “Hi, young man! I'm Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug? ”
I said      , “Of course!”
“Why are you in college at such an age?” I asked.
She joked, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have children, and then travel around the world.”
“No, seriously,” I asked.
“I always dreamed of having a college education. Now I’m getting one!” she told me.
After a year, Rose became       . She could easily get along well with others wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she enjoyed the attention from others.
At the end of the term we invited Rose to       at our party. I’ll never forget what she taught us.
“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. Here are the secrets of staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you        your dreams, you die!” she said.
“There is a big       between growing old and growing up. Anybody can grow old. That doesn’t take any talent,” she added. “But to grow up, you have to find the chance in change. Have no regrets(遗憾). We usually don’t have regrets for what we did,      rather for things we did not do.”
Finally we graduated from the college with Rose. One week after graduation, she died peacefully in her sleep. She taught us by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

"Uncle Sam," is usually used to refer to the United States or the US government. It is the nickname of the country. It is hard to believe that this nickname became known quite by accident and there was a man  75   "Uncle Sam."However, not many people have ever heard of such a man.Not even most young Americans.
The man was called Uncle Sam Wilson. He was born in Arlington,Massachusetts, September 13, 1776. At the age of 14 Sam joined the American Revolutionary War(美国革命), and   76    in the army under George Washington until the end of the war.He then moved to Troy, New York states, and began a meatpacking business. He earned a reputation(赢得了声誉)for being honest and hardworking. He was locally respected and admired, thus greeted as Uncle Sam.
One day in 1812,a group of visitors came to Sam's meatpacking plant(肉类加工厂).Among them was Government official. He  77    the capitalized letters(大写字母) EAUS on the packages of meat and asked what they stood for. A worker man replied that EA stood for Elbert Anderson, the businessman for whom Sam was working. And he added   78  that US(actually it was the short form for United States) stood for Uncle Sam Wilson. Soon soldiers were saying all army supplies were from  "Uncle Sam".
In May 1813,this story appeared in a newspaper published in New York.Since Uncle Sam was an example of a hard-working man and a lover of America, the idea of"Uncle Sam" as the name of this kind of man became well-known rapidly.Uncle Sam was ready to help  79   and place the interest of the nation(国家利益)above all---this is in line with (与……符合)the American spirit. This makes the  American consider Uncle Sam   80  the symbol of the USA.In 1961 the US Congress made a decision that "Uncle Sam" is the America's national symbol.

“Yes,colder — and more expensive! A dining table will be $20 more expensive on November 30, won’t it, John?”
John looked hard at me for half a minute. Was there a little smile in his two blue eyes?I gave his bill back to him.
