My friend Matt and I arrived at the Activity Centre on Friday evening. The accommodation wasn't wonderful, but we had everything we needed(beds, blankets, food),and we were pleased to be out of the city and in the fresh air.
On Saturday morning we met the other ten members of our group. Cameron had come along with two friends,Kevin and Simon, while sisters Carole and Lynn had come with Amanda. There were some other members I didn't know. We had come from different places and none of us knew the area.
We knew we were going to spend the weekend outdoors, but none of us was sure exactly how. Half of us spent the morning caving while the others went rock-climbing and then we changed at lunchtime. Matt and I went to the caves(岩洞) first. Climbing out was harder than going in,but after a good deal of pushing, we were out at last. Though we were covered with mud,we were pleased and excited by what we'd done.

Lost Cat Returned To Owner 12 Years Later

April 3, 2014 – Linda Edwards of Las Vegas, Nevada is full of happiness because her long lost cat Spaz has been returned to her – 12 years after he first went missing!
Spaz first went missing in 2002 and Edwards looked for him every day for three months. She searched all around her town and even wrote letters to some newspapers for help and was never able to find him. At the end of the three months, on New Year’s Eve of 2002 her searching stopped.
But someone recently discovered a dirty, thin stray cat (流浪猫) and took him into a West Flamingo Animal Hospital. The people working in the hospital checked the cat and were sure enough that his name was Spaz and he belonged to Edwards!
“An old lady found a kitty on Sunday and brought him here. We scanned (扫描) him for a microchip (微芯片) and we were able to find out his owner. The kitty, whose name is Spaz, has been missing for 12 years!” the animal hospital wrote on their Facebook page early last week.
Microchipping pets is a way to recognize if a stray animal belongs to anyone who could be missing them. Microchipping pets allows animal services to learn if they have a family waiting for them. Microchips are only about the size of a grain of rice and can only be removed by operation.
Edwards is very thankful she had Spaz microchipped and was so excited to get him back!
“I feel like I have a second chance,” she said. “This would have never happened if it weren’t for microchips.”

“Why, sir,” said the farmer, “didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen (花粉) from the corn and moves it quickly from field to field. If my neighbors grow      __ corn, crosspollination (异花传粉) will affect the quality of my corn. So if I want to grow good corn, I must _    _ my neighbors to grow good corn.”

As a great man says, “We make a living by what we __    _, but we make a life by what we give.” We can't live without food, clothes, and many other things. However, a meaningful life is not decided by how much we can get, but by how much we can give others. Giving, instead of taking, makes us different from other animals. What makes us who we are? This question has two different answers. One is the environment that surrounds us when we grow up, and the other is our genes (基因). In English, this is called the “nature vs nurture debate(辩论)”. Nature means genes, and nurture means environment, including the people around you.
There is a famous saying: “Give me a child until the age of 7 and I’ll show you the man.” Now, there is a scientific research to support this famous saying.
They watched small birds in new environments, and wrote down how much they explored(探索). Birds that grew up with very outgoing birds were more outgoing themselves. Scientists at the universities of Exeter, UK and Hamburg, Germany did studies on birds. They found that their personalities(个性) were affected most by the birds around them when they grew up – more so than genes.
Nick Royle from the University of Exeter in the UK said the research was surprising because it shows that “for these birds, personality is mainly determined(决定) by environment.” However, human personalities are a lot more complicated than birds, so there is much we still don’t know. The nature vs nurture debate will continue for a long time, if not forever.

LONDON—Scientists have found an unusual way to prevent our planet from overheating: move it to a cooler spot. All you have to do is to send a few comets (彗星) in the direction of Earth, and its orbit (轨道) will be changed. Our world will then be sent moving into a safer older part of the solar system.
This idea for improving our climate comes from a group of US NASA (美国航空航天局) engineers and American astronomers. They say their plan could add another six billion years to the useful lifetime of our planet—hopefully doubling its working life.
The plan put forward by Dr. Laughlin, and his colleagues Don Korycansky and Fred Adams, needs carefully directing a comet or asteroid (小行星) so that it passes close by our planet and sends some of its gravitational energy (重力势能) to Earth.
“Earth’s orbital speed would increase as a result and we would move to a higher orbit away from the sun,” Laughlin said.
Engineers would then direct their comet so that it passed close to Jupiter (木星) or Saturn(土星). The comet would pick up energy from one of these giant planets. Later its orbit would bring it back to Earth, and the process would be repeated.
In the short term, the plan provides an ideal way to worldwide warming, although the team was actually worried about a much greater danger. The sun is certain to heat up in about a billion years and so “seriously compromise” our biosphere (生物圈)—by cooking us.
That’s why the group decided to try to save Earth.
The plan has one or two worrying sides, however. For a start, space engineers would have to be very careful about how they directed their asteroid or comet towards Earth. The smallest miscalculation (误算) in orbit could fire it straight at Earth—with deadly results.
There is also the question of the moon. As the present issue of Scientific American magazine points out, if Earth was pushed out of its present location, it is “most likely the moon would be stripped (剥离) away from Earth,” it states. This would greatly change our planet’s climate.
小题1:What makes the scientists plan to move Earth?
A.A few comets are moving to the direction of Earth.
B.Earth’s working life is coming to an end soon.
C.Earth will become too hot for mankind to keep alive.
D.The moon is moving farther and farther away from Earth.
小题2:If the plan is successful, Earth will have a working life of ________ years.
A.12 billionB.6 billionC.18 billionD.24 billion
小题3:What serious problems might the plan cause according to the passage?
A.The comet might hit Earth and man might lose the moon.
B.Earth might be moved too far away and man might die because of the coldness.
C.The comet might hit Jupiter or Saturn and never return to Earth.
D.Earth’s working life might be greatly shortened.
小题4:What does the underlined word “compromise” mean?
A.provideB.benefit (受益)C.shareD.endanger

When the traffic lights turn red, we will stop driving a car or crossing a street. Why is red used for traffic lights instead of other colors?
As we know, scattering (散射) happens when light goes through the air. For the same media(媒质), if the wavelength islong, the scattering will be short. If the wavelength is short, then the scattering will be long.
Of all lights we can see red has the longest wavelength, so the scattering is the weakest. That means the red light travels far. In fact, it travels farther on rainy days.
Using the red light can help drivers in farther areas sec the lights. It helps drivers stow down or stop in lime. If drivers don't see the red light until they are close, they may not be able to stop the car in time. An accident may happen Red can also excite people. We can act more quickly when we see the color red. In a word, red lights help drivers stop in time and help prevent accidents.

Recently, a reader asked me about the dangers that pets can face around the house. So, I visited my local animal       last weekend and got some advice to share about how we can make our homes       for our pets.
When I arrived, several pets and their     were in the waiting room. Mr. Smith, with a cat, chatted with me. "My cat will be       for an uncomfortable stomach in a minute," he said. "My children gave       a bowl of milk. However, if she is given milk, she will get a stomachache.”
Just then, the vet (兽医) walked over to us. “Yes, Mr. Smith is      . Only a few people know this, but milk mustn't be fed to cats     some cats can't take it in easily," the vet said. "Other human foods are bad for pets   . For example, if a dog eats chocolate, it will become    ."

Last month, a small cat was brought     because it had eaten a button which was on the floor without being noticed. "
Before I left, the vet    me some more important advice to share with you:
