Daniel was always making excuses for forgetting to do things. His usual excuse was: “ I was too busy.” or “I didn’t have time.”
Daniel’s parents were worried about him. “ He shouldn’t go through life making excuses all the time.” his father said. “ No one will trust him to do anything. He won’t be able to keep a job. No sensible(明智的)girl will marry him.”
“I don’t know what we can do.” his mother said.
“I have an idea.” his father said. “If this doesn’t work, nothing will.”
The next day was Daniel’s birthday. He was really looking forward to getting exciting presents. He woke up, expecting his parents to wish him a happy birthday. But all day what they said was “Good morning, Daniel. Hurry, or you will be late for school.” There were no presents, not even a card. He was really disappointed.
“Never mind.” he thought. (3) “There’ll be a surprise for me after school.” But there wasn’t. Sadly he said to his parents at dinner, “Today’s my birthday.”
“Oh,” his father said. “So it is. I forgot.”
“So did I.” his mother said.
“How could you forget?” Daniel asked. “There must be a reason.”
“Well, yes.” his father said. “We have a really good excuse for forgetting your birthday, Daniel. We didn’t remember your birthday because we were too busy.”
Poor Daniel! He never had a silly excuse for not doing something again.

One of the most famous scientists to study adaptations (适应能力) was Charles Darwin (达尔文). He was born in England in 1809. He wasn't the best student in his school, but when he was 16, his father sent him to a medical school. Charles liked spending time outdoors observing (观察) nature more than attending medical classes and dropped out(辍学) without graduating.
Next, Charles' father sent him to school to become a minister (牧师). This time he made it to graduation. But he didn't want to do the work of a minister. His friends encouraged him to follow his interest in science.
After graduation, Charles was invited to sail on the Beagle as an unpaid scientist. He wasn't the first choice, but he was the lucky one to go. The Beagle was to travel to South America and then around the world. The crew's task was to make maps of the places they visited.
On December 27th, 1831 Charles Darwin sailed from England on the Beagle. The trip was planned to last two years. In fact, it lasted five. During this time, he saw many amazing things. He collected lots of plants and animals and took them back to England to study.
Twenty-three years later, Darwin published a scientific paper with another man named Wallace. Darwin described how some animals have adaptations that help them survive. They are passed on to offspring (后代). Darwin’s ideas about adaptations are still very important to the study of living things.

Answer the questions according to the passage you read.
A great French writer said that we should help everyone as much as we can, because we often need help ourselves. Sometimes the small can help the great. And he told the following story.
An ant was drinking by a small river and fell in. She tried her best to reach the bank(岸), but she couldn’t move at all. The poor ant got too tried but was still doing her best. Then a big bird saw her. The bird threw a piece of wood into the water. With it the ant reached the bank again. While she was resting and drying herself on the grass, she heard a man coming up. The man was walking with a gun(枪) in his hand. As soon as he saw the bird, he wanted to kill her. But the ant bit(咬) him on one of his feet and at the moment the bird flew away at once.

“Which one of you did this?”
We all looked down at the step. There was child’s handwriting in chalk there. I had a lot of
. I hoped no one could see it. Would he guess it was me? I was so worried. When he asked me, I lied, “Not me, Dad.” The others denied(否认)it as well. Of course, we all knew that one of       must have done it. But as the youngest and smallest of the three, I just couldn’t find the courage to tell the truth.
To       who had written on the step, Father gave us each a piece of paper and a pencil. “I want each of you to     exactly what you see on the step.”
I tried my best to write the words     . I didn’t want Dad to be able to tell it was me.
He       our pieces of paper and looked at them. “Since none of you will admit (承认) to have done it, then I will punish (惩罚) you      and said nothing. The last thing I wanted was for Dad to       me.
“I did it.” My sister said she did something that she didn’t. Father grounded her for a month.
We didn’t talk about that day for many years. Not until we were all older and I knew it was        to finally tell my dad it was really me. I always felt sorry for it. That was the last time I let anyone take the blame (责备) for me.
