One possible version:
Jack is one of my best friends. Yesterday was his birthday. I searched shop after shop, planning a nice gift or something expected for him. Finally an attractive notebook on the shelf caught my eye. It was the most attractive notebook I had ever seen.
On his birthday when he accepted my gift with a few words of wishes on it, he was filled with excitement. He said it never occurred to him that he would get such a nice gift. The gift had great effect on his later life. From the time he got the notebook I sent him, he wrote down something meaningful that happened to him every day. It often reminds him of the true friendship between us, which I hope will last forever. (126 words)
