Hello, my name is Crackers and I’m a fussy(挑剔的) parrot. I know I’m fussy because I always need to have something to chew(咀嚼) on, and when I’m sleeping I insist (by making a sharp sound that drives my owner crazy) that my cage be covered with a white cloth. Sleep is very important to me! It makes me full of energy during my waking hours. When I’m really excited, I raise my bright yellow-orange head and flap my wings wildly!

My owner’s name is Patty, and whenever her friends come to visit, they always ask if I can talk. I give them a loud “Hello!” before Pat can even answer. I know many other human phrases as well, such as “I love you!” or “Good morning!” but I only talk when Pat hands me a treat. That’s how mischievous I am!

My owner feeds me with a great diet. People think that we only eat seeds, but actually, parrots like me are also huge fans of fruits and vegetables such as oranges, pears, peas, and even carrots. A personal favorite of mine is pizza crust, but she only gives me that as an occasional(偶尔的) treat, because it’s fatty!

My parents are from the Asian country of Indonesia. They were actually residents(居民) of a large tropical rain forest there. Rain forests are home to huge numbers of plants and animals. They are also referred to as the earth’s “lungs” because the trees take up a gas called carbon dioxide. They, in turn, give off oxygen which is important for animals’ lives. Sadly, rain forests all over Africa, Asia, and South America are being cut down.

Scientists are now looking for ways to use the rain forests without destroying them. If not, there will soon be no home for all the beautiful residents like me on this wonderful planet.

What is more important to a high school student than being popular? Anyone who has ever gone to high school or at least seen a John Hughes’ movie knows the answer to that question. When Theresa Sommers first discovered MySpace three years ago, the teen from Minneapolis, St. Paul thought she had found the real high school popularity contest (比赛). She could spend hours a day creating an online picture, finding cool pictures and music to make her page look more beautiful, and looking for interesting-looking people to be her online friends. And along the way, she could compete (竞争) with her friends to see who had the most friends or most-visited page.

The more she used the site, however, the less interested she became in only being popular; she started using her time for more heartfelt conversations with friends and went more deeply into her personal interests. As a beginner in taking pictures, she put her best pictures on the site and looked for advice from people who are good at taking pictures.

At the same time, she began to get in touch with the students of the colleges she wanted to go to. She opened up a new account (账户) on Facebook. And she even began to put some of her own creative writing on the website and would ask for advice on homework from her friends. What do you do when a friend tells you he/she is lonely?

Perhaps you think if someone is lonely, it’s their fault, or that since you’re so busy, you couldn’t possibly do anything to help. Loneliness can hit anyone from time to time, but if you’ve failed to help a lonely friend, here are some tips for doing better next time.

It’s easy to ignore a friend’s loneliness, especially when you have a life full of people and you’re busy. You might even think it’s stupid to admit (承认) that you’re lonely.

But being lonely doesn’t mean someone has few friends. There could be a number of reasons for this. Perhaps their close friends have moved away, perhaps something unexpected has pulled them away from some of their friends, or any number of things that can happen to anyone at any time. Another wrong belief is that lonely people just aren’t busy enough.

Don’t say these things to a lonely friend:

● Lonely? Ha! I never get lonely! I’m so busy.

●Why don’t you have any friends?

●Oh, I’d love to have some quiet time as you have.

●I wish I were lonely, but my kids keep me running.

●You’ll be fine. You’ve got your kids/your dog/your job …
