Helping kids deal with bullies

Bullying (欺凌) can turn something like going to school into a terrible dream for kids. 　　16　　 　And in extreme situations, it can end up with threats, property damage or someone getting seriously hurt. The following are some points about bullying.

What is bullying?

Why kids bully

Kids bully for a variety of reasons. Signs of being bullied

When kids seem more easily upset than usual, or when they start avoiding certain situations, like taking the bus to school, it might be because of bullying.

A new survey finds that more than 80% of the Internet users in the United States search for health information online. Susannah Fox from the Pew Internet Project says doctors are still the main source of health information. But the survey finds that searching online is one of the leading ways that many people look for a second opinion.

“People are sort of checking what they have heard from a doctor,” Fox said. “Our studies show that people are still very likely to turn to a health professional when they need a diagnosis (诊断) or when they are planning a treatment.”

The Internet has also become an important source of emotional support for people with health problems. Fox says many of the Internet users go online to find other people who have the same condition.

“It is more prevalent (普遍的) among people with more serious health issues, and it is basically off the charts with people living with rare disease,” Fox said. “They are so eager to find other people online who share their health concerns.” A disease is considered rare if it affects fewer than two hundred thousand people worldwide. The rise of social networking has made it easier for people with rare diseases to connect with each other and feel less alone.

Social networking is also changing the way some doctors and patients communicate with each other. Dr. Livingston operates a medical center for women in Irving, Texas. His office uses password-protected software to share information with patients.

“We provide the patients with full access to their medical care. Anything I can see, the patient can see.” Dr. Livingston said. “All of their notes, all of their doctor visits are right there. All of their lab work is right there. It has just revolutionized the way we do health care.”

Dr. Livingston says the software has increased efficiency, reduced costs and improved relations between doctors and patients. His medical center also has a Facebook page, a MySpace page and a Twitter feed.

What are the big, hairy and ape-like creatures that live in the forests of North America? Bigfoot! Over the years, some people have said the creature known as Bigfoot is not just an American folktale, and now some scientists are trying to prove it.

Records show that people have been chasing the mysterious Bigfoot since the 1840s. Both amateur and professional hunters have made countless hikes through North American forests, vowing to uncover some signs that could prove the existence of the beast. But without clear scientific evidence, most people—especially in the scientific community—believe Bigfoot is just a pure fiction.

Now, scientist Jeffrey Meldrum and fellow Bigfoot-believer William Barnes have a new idea for how to find the species: search for the beasts from the sky!

They want to float a high-tech surveillance blimp (监视飞艇) over the mountains in the western United States. More people have reported seeing Bigfoot there than in any other regions. They hope that a blimp will be able to fly easily over the mountains and spot some of the hairy creatures from above.

The remotely controlled blimp would be equipped with special cameras that can detect body heat, even in the dark. Any signs that Bigfoot is in the area would be sent to the researchers on the ground. Meldrum says the ground teams would then follow the evidence and “try to make contact” with the mysterious creatures.

No Bigfoot has ever been captured till now. Researchers have never discovered fossils that prove Bigfoot-like creatures once walked on the planet. The closest thing to prove that Bigfoot exists is that searchers will occasionally meet a set of mysterious footprints on the forest floor.

Meldrum is currently seeking financial support for his project. Although he hasn’t collected funds to get his project off the ground yet, Meldrum remains hopeful. He is in talks with two cable channels which are willing to produce a TV series following his project from beginning to end.

When a toddler (初学走路的孩子) went missing on Friday into the dark and cold woods around his home, officials called out police dogs to search for him. But his family, police and firefighters needn’t have worried because another dog was taking care of the boy—the family’s dog Ashapoo. The loyal (忠诚的) and trusty dog was always at the side of his owner’s two-year-old grandson.

The dad said, “I think Peyton got scared and just lay down to take a nap, and Ashapoo stayed right there with him.” He added, “I guess Ashapoo felt that it was his duty to protect him and be with him.” And he also said, “I believe the dog was his guardian angel in fur.”

The parents said the dog was their hero. They planned to get Ashapoo a well earned steak, and they were also thinking about getting a GPS tracker for Peyton.

It is hard to think of another city in Africa that has quite as much to delight children as South Africa’s Cape Town.

Firstly, there is a mountain in the middle of the city that is never out of sight. It forms part of the remarkable Table Mountain National Park, with forests, gardens and revolving cable cars which offer you spectacular 360-degree views.

Secondly, there is the Cape Peninsula to explore, all within easy travelling distance by car, bicycle or tour bus. You will find glorious beaches there. There are also small, rocky coves like St James in the south, ideally protected for young swimmers.

Whales can be spotted in the ocean around the Cape Peninsula, but it is well worth taking a day trip to the town of Hermanus in Walker Bay, just more than an hour’s drive southeast from Cape Town, to see them more closely. The town has an annual whale festival in September and you will find whale logos on just about everything.

Boulders Beach in the southern Cape Peninsula is home to around 3,000 jackass penguins (斑嘴环企鹅). You can view them on several beaches. In summer, it is fun to swim with them. They may not smell too good, but their curious funny actions make this a great stop on a peninsula tour.

There is more history to be found on Robben Island, which is a short ferry ride from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. More suitable for older children, the two hours spent on the island include a bus tour and a visit to the prison where you can see Mandela’s cell and hear stories from his former inmates (同室者).
