Carl Orff was born in Germany on July 19，1895．He began to show interest in music at an early age．He studied composing music at the Music Academy（学院） in Munich．After graduation in 1914，he became a professional musician and teacher．In 1920，he made his home in Munich and worked as a teacher and composer．He composed lots of songs，operas and orchestral music that were popular．

In 1924，Orff started a primary school in Munich．In this school，music was played together with the movement of dance and gymnastics．This special way of teaching music made the children hear and feel what music was．The instruments Orff used more than any others in his school were percussion instruments（打击乐器）．Orff did successfully，and many other schools began to follow him．After World War l]，his ideas spread all over the world．The special way at this school even has an effect on primary musical education today．Many of his ideas can be found in the book called Music for Children．

Carl Orff gave all his life to primary musical education，and he was most successful in it．On March 29，1982，he died．

This Thursday, across the US, kids are skipping school(缺课)and going to work with their parents. They’ll be making copies, sending faxes(传真)and sweeping floors. I still remember when this day started, I was very happy. Not only did I have the chance to miss school, but I also got to sit in my dad’s taxi all day long and we would go to a restaurant for lunch.
But after only 20 minutes of driving around the city. I was very bored. I couldn’t read my book in the car as I would get carsick(晕车)and my dad didn’t like to turn on the radio. I got hot and uncomfortable. people wouldn’t get into his taxi because they thought he already had a passenger: me—so nothing happened. It seemed years before we went out for lunch. I actually started to miss school.
While the point of the day is to give kids a chance to experience real-life jobs and give them an idea of the possibilities(可能性) for their futures, I got something completely different from the day. I learned to appreciate(重视) school. Where else do you get to play with your friends, do science experiments, read great books and write stories all in one day?

We helped clean the yard in the front of a hospital, but some patients（病人） there left us a very bad impression（印象）. They were very impolite and shouted at nurses and doctors. I think nurses and doctors’ work is hard. They try their best to help us. We should give them more respect and understanding.
