One summer day my father sent me to buy wire for our farm.At 16,I liked1 better than driving our truck,2 this time I was not happy. My father had told me I’d have to ask for credit(赊账) at the store.
Sixteen is a3age,when a young man wants respect, not charity. It was 1976,and the ugly4 of racial discrimination was5 a fact of life.I’d seen my friends ask for credit and then stand, head down, while the store owner6 whether they were “good for it.” I knew black youths just like me who were7 like thieves by the store clerk each time they went into a grocery.
My family was8.We paid our debts. But before harvest, cash was short.Would the store owner9 us?
At Davis’s store,Buck Davis stood behind the cash desk, talking to a farmer.I nodded10 I passed him on my way to the hardware shelves. When I brought my11 to the cash desk,I said12,“I need to put this on credit.”
The farmer gave me an amused,distrustful13.But Buck’s face didn’t change.“Sure,” he said14.“Your daddy is15 good for it.” He16 to the other man.“This here is one of James Williams’s sons.”
The farmer nodded in a neighborly17.I was filled with pride.James Williams’s son. Those three words had opened a door to an adult’s respect and trust.
That day I discovered that the good name my parents had18 brought our whole family the respect of our neighbors.Everyone knew what to19 from a Williams: a decent person who kept his word and respected himself20 much to do wrong.

Last spring, I was fortunate to be chosen to participate in an exchange study program. In my application letter, I was careful to 1 how much I wanted to see France; evidently, my excitement really came through in my words. Once I 2 that I was going, all I could think about was the fun of foreign travel and making all sorts of new and 3 friends. While traveling was inspiring and meeting people was 4 , nothing about my term in France was what I 5.
The moment I arrived in Paris, I was 6 by a nice French couple who would become my host parents. My entire experience was joyous and exciting 7 I received some shocking news from my program coordinator(协调人): there had been a death in my host parents’ extended family. They had to travel outside France for several weeks. That afternoon, I had to 8 out of one family’s house into another. The exchange coordinator told me I’d have a 9this time and asked whether I could share a bedroom with an English speaker. To avoid the temptation(诱惑) to 10my native language, I asked not to be 11with an English-speaking roommate. When I got to my new room, I 12 myself to my new roommate Paolo, a Brazilian(巴西人) the same age as I, whom I was surprised to find playing one of my favorite CDS! In just a few hours, we knew we’d be good friends for the rest of the 13 .
I left France with many 14 , so when people asked me what my favorite part of the trip was, they are always 15 to hear me talk about my Brazilian friend Paolo and scores of weekdays in class, weeknights on the town, and weekends16 France we enjoyed together. I love how people 17 seem so different, but end up being so18 The most valuable lesson I gained from studying in France wasn’t just to respect the friend people 19to respect all people, for your next best friend could be just a continent away. I would recommend an exchange program to anyone who wants to experience foreign cultures and gain meaningful 20 .

This was my grandmother’s first Christmas without grandfather. When we reached her house, it did seem a little 1without grandfather.
Grandfather had always said the Christmas 2was the most important. So we set to work assembling(组装)the beautiful 3tree that was stored in grandfather’s closet(储藏室). After we finished, we stepped back to 4our work. It looked wonderful. But something was 5.
“Where’s the star?” I asked. It was my grandmother’s 6. As we emptied box after box and found no star, my grandmother’s eyes 7with tears. Grandfather had given it to Grandmother fifty years ago. Now, on her first Christmas without 8, the star was gone, too.
“Let’s 9in the closet where the tree was,” my sister Donna said. We 10under beds and over shelves, inside and outside 11we had exhausted every possibility. We could see Grandmother was 12, although she tried not to show it. By now, it was 13outside, and time for bed, as Santa would soon be here.
The next morning, my sisters and I 14early to see what Santa had left under the tree. After breakfast, the family sat together to 15presents. “The last gift is to Grandmother from Grandfather.” Father said, in a puzzled voice.
“From who?” There was 16 in my grandmother’s voice.
“I found that 17in the closet when we got the tree down,” Mother explained.
My grandmother opened it. Her face lit up when she pulled out a(n) 18 golden star. There was a note attached. Her voice trembled(颤抖)as she read it:
Don’t be 19 with me, dear. I broke your star while putting away the tree. Thought it was time for a new one, I hope it brings you as much 20 as the first one. Merry Christmas.

I once had a teacher whose husband died of heart attack. About a week after his death, she shared some of her1understanding with students.2the late afternoon sunlight came shinning in and the class was nearly3, she moved a few things aside on the edge of her4and sat down there.
With a gentle look of reflection(反思) on her face, she paused and said, “Class is over. I would like to5with all of you, a thought that is6to class, but which I feel is very7.”
“Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love and give of ourselves.8of us knows when this fantastic experience will end. It can be9at any moment. Perhaps this is the Power’s way of telling us that we must make the10of every single day.”
Her eyes were11to water, but she went on, “So I would like you all to make me a12.From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to13. It could be the14of the breeze (微风)slightly rustling the leaves in the trees, or the way the morning light catches one autumn leaf as it15gently to the ground.
“Please look for these things, and16them. It is the17things that we are put here on earth to enjoy. We must make it important to notice them, for at18it can all be taken away.” The class was completely19. We all picked up our books and walked out of the room silently. That20, I noticed more things on my way home from school than I had that whole semester.
Remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
