My wife began to laugh. Then the   19   struck me like a stone between the eyes. I laughed at   20 . ^Yes, it¨s a cupboard, but thanks. ̄ I drove as fast as I could, still thinking over this funny experience.

It was a cold winter¨s night when I stopped for gas on my way home from work. I was tired and had a slight 36 .

I worked in a 37 doctor¨s office and this was one of those days when the unexpected happened, making the schedule run 38 than usual. It seemed I was going to be late 39 home and my husband, being the 40 person, would be ready to pronounce me late once again. Maybe 41 I hurried, I could still make it home.

I was heading inside to 42 for my gas when I noticed an older couple at the counter. I heard them asking for 43 to the local hospital. It was the same hospital that I had just 44 a few minutes ago.

The young man at the counter was trying to be 45 in explaining how to get there, with two other people making 46 . One of them was 47 trying to give them a whole different route back. It was then that I walked over to the couple and said, ^Would you like to follow me to the 48 ? ̄

A look of 49 crossed the woman¨s face.

^I¨m going right by there, ̄ I said, which wasn¨t a(an) 50 since I had just made up my mind to do 51 that.

I got in my car and began the journey back. I was trying to watch to be sure they were right 52 me. It took only fifteen minutes to get there as rush hour traffic was beginning to 53 . I felt better than I had all day and my headache was nearly gone.

Later, as I arrived home, my husband 54 , ^So you aren¨t ever late any more. ̄

I said, ^Sometimes it¨s 55 to be late. ̄

Some people think they have an answer to the problems of automobile (廿概) crowding and pollution in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle, or "bike."

In 1 cities, hundreds of people 2 bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have 3 formed a group called "Bike for a Better City". They claim (蕗各) that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be 4 automobiles in the downtown section (綴偏曝) of the city and therefore 5 dirty air from car engines.

For several years this 6 has been trying to get the city government 7 bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to 8 special lanes (概祇) ! for bicycles only ! on some of the main streets, because 9 bicycle riders must use the same lanes 10 cars, there may be accidents. "Bike for a Better City" feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.

But no bicycle lanes have been painted 11. Not everyone thinks they are a good idea. Taxi drivers don't like the idea ! they say 12 will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea ! they say that 13 there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.

The city government has not yet 14 what to do. It 15 to keep everyone happy. 16 weekends, Central Park ! the largest open 17 in New York ! is closed to cars, and the roads may be 18 by bicycles only. But "Bike for a Better City" says that this is not 19 and keep fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown. 20 that happens, the safest place to bicycle may be in the park.
