Nick was tired of lifeevery day was exactly the same.

^What I need is a little adventure! ̄Nick thought as he waited at the bus stop one morning.Nick¨s little adventure happened sooner than he had expected!

While he was on the busreading his newspaperthe man sitting next to him suddenly pushed a large brown envelope in his hands.^Heretake this! ̄he murmured. Then he stood up and got off the bus before Nick could say a word.

Nick sat there holding the envelope. It felt heavy. There were papers insideor money perhaps.^I¨d better hand it over to the police ̄he thought. There was a police station close to his office. But as he got off the busa man came up to him.He was obviously waiting for something.^He wants the envelope. ̄Nick thought.Nick began to walk quickly and the man hurried after him.Nick started to run and the man began to runtoo. But thenjust before he got to the police station.Nick managed to lose the man in the crowds when he entered the police stationthe man was no longer in sight.

Inside the police stationthe envelope was full of money!false money.^Obviously the man made a mistake ̄the inspector said^He thought you were one of the gang! Wellcongratulations! ̄

Nick felt like a hero.He could already see his name in all the papers. He could imagine an interview on television!

^However ̄the inspector went oninterrupting Nick¨s daydreams.^I¨m afraid I must ask you to keep quiet about this. We¨re trying to catch some very clever thieves and we don¨t want them to know that we have some of the money. So you mustn¨t say a word to anyone!even your boss! Sorry! ̄

^So that¨s that! ̄Nick said to himself on his way to the office. He was over an hour late.^I¨ve had my little adventurebut I can¨t tell anyone about it.So what¨s the point? I¨ve even got to make up an excuse to the boss! ̄

I first met Annie Mae, a maid (溺突), at my parents-in-laws¨ in 1959. She prepared and 36 meals in her quiet, gentle way and then returned to the kitchen to read her Bible (ゞ淵将〃) while we 37 . She was a devoted Christian. I found this increasingly true 38 I came to know her more by observation than by conversation.

My husband and I 39 visited his parents. Each time I saw her eating 40 , reading her Bible, I wanted to sit down with her and just talk. 41 , whites didn¨t do that with blacks then, and I had to 42 the practice.

In 1965, I decided to 43 the furniture and return to my home state with my two 44 when my husband wanted a divorce (宣脂).

Annie Mae asked if she could buy the boys¨ 45 . When I answered 46 , she asked the price. Then, she asked if she could 47 a little money each month. She was 48 , and I knew her well.

Then each month, an envelope 49 us from Annie Mae with 2 or 3 dollars. A year passed. Annie Mae¨s 50 payment arrived along with the following note:

Dear Mrs. Holladay,

I am sending you my last payment of three dollars for the beds 51 . I told my two sons they could now put the beds 52 and sleep in them, for they are now paid for and rightfully 53 us.Thank you for your 54 .

Annie Mae

I read the note two or three times, my eyes filled with tears. Had I only known earlier, I would have said, ^Use them now. Don¨t 55 until you pay for them. ̄
