From your letter, I know you have shown 48 great interest in inventing new things. That¨s great. As for how to be an inventor, there is no quick answer to 49 . Coming from different cultures and having different backgrounds, inventors do not seem to have much 50 common. But creative thinking, 51 is greatly valued, is perhaps the basic skill an inventor should have. In order to explore new possibilities, you will have to learn to break 52 from old thought patterns. When you get stuck, try to look at the problem in 53 many ways as possible. Each new way may improve your understanding. More importantly, always keep it in your mind 54 success is no accident. It is the result of a long process of trial and error. Above 55 , the main task for you is to study hard and try to learn more knowledge. This, of course, will lay a solid foundation. Hope your future invention will make a difference. Good luck Yours, Wang Li PART THREE: READING COMPREHENSION A Directions: Read the following three passages. Last evening I was watching the evening news on television. The news was about a prize for scientific  1   ;I forgot what it was. The announcer, whose name was Ralph Story, said something that caught my  2  .^All great discoveries, ̄he said,^are made by people between the ages of twenty-five and thirty. ̄  3   a little over thirty myself, I wanted to disagree with him.  4   wants to think that he is past the age of making any discovery. The next day I happened to be in the public library and spent several hours looking up the  5  of famous people and their discoveries. Ralph was right.

First I looked at some of the   6   discoveries. One of the earliest discoveries, the famous experiment that proved that bodies of different  7   fall at the same speed, was made by Galileo when he was 26. Madam Curie started her research that  8   to the Nobel Prize when she was 28. Einstein was 26 when he published his world-changing theory of relativity. Well,  9   of that. Yet I  10   if those^best years ̄were true in other  11   .

Winston Churchill was elected to the House of Commons at the age of 26. Abraham Lincoln  15   the life of a country lawyer and was elected to government. At what age? Twenty-six.

But why  16   best years some after thirty? After thirty, I  17   ,most people do not want to take risks or try   18   ways. Then I thought of people like Shakespeare and Picasso. The former was writing wonderful works at the ripe age of fifty, while the latter was  19   trying new ways of painting when he was ninety!

Perhaps there is still  20   for me.

When you read a story in English, do you read it for the story or for the English? This is a 1 that is not so foolish 2 it may seem. For I 3 that many students of English 4 far more attention to the story than to the English. They read and 5 and for a long time 6 remember the story, but do not care to study the 7 of words and 8 in it. For instance, they care for the memory of 9 the mystery (舞蜘) in the story is solved, but do not remember a 10 sentence in the story and cannot 11 what preposition is used before or after a certain 12 in the speech of a 13 character.

Of course, it is all right to read and enjoy and 14 a story, and so 15 as one wants to 16 the story only, one need not bother (継伉) about the language. But the case is quite different with a 17 of English. I mean a student of English is different from a student of stories or 18 is called the general reader.

As you may also have 19 from the above, you ought to read very 20. Not only very carefully but also aloud, and that again and again 21 you know the passage by heart and can 22 it as if it were your own. Positively (屎中) this will teach you many 23 words and phrases; negatively (減中) it will help you to avoid many errors and faults in expression. Incidentally I have found from 24 that intelligent copying is a help to 25 by heart.

For eighty-four days the old man did not catch any fish. People said that he was 1. But the old man still 2 the sea. He was 3 strong and a good 4. 5 the eighty-fifth day the old man sailed 6 out to sea than any of 7 boats. He sailed to the 8 where the water was very deep. Then he felt his fishing line 9 gently by a big fish which was swimming very 10 in the water.

The fish was so powerful 11 it pulled the boat after it. It took the small boat far 12 to sea. The old man could 13 see the land.

"Fish," he said softly, 14 "I'll stay with you 15 I am dead." The old man pulled the line a little 16, but he did not dare to pull it 17. The fish might jump and 18. Or it might dive 19 into the sea and pull the boat after it. But the fish was 20 and brave. It pulled the boat 21. When the fish 22 at last to the top of the water, the old man saw that it was two feet 23 than his boat. The old man 24 many great fish, but this one was the greatest fish he had ever seen. It was also the most 25.

If you asked high school girls to name their favorite sports, most would probably say basketball or volleyball. I happen to be one of the few girls who would    1   :surfing(喝惜塰強). But isn¨t that a boy thing? Some people    2    . Most certainly not.

I started surfing about five years ago and    3     in love with the sport on the very first day. Riding that first   4     was the best feeling I had ever experienced.

When I try to   5    surfing with other things, I find it very difficult because, in my

6   there¨s nothing like it. It involves(韮膚欺)body, 7    , and soul. There¨s sand between my toes and cool, salt water all   8     us. The feeling I get when I¨m surfing across that    9    , becoming one with the    10    , is like I¨m weightless.

The one thing I can   11     from surfing and not any other sport is endless challenge(薬媾). You can never be the ^best surfer ̄ because the ocean    12     an uncountable variety of waves that nobody can ever master. The variations of surfing styles are wonderful. Some surfers are free and flowing; others are very aggressive(試埔嗤薦議)and 13    . All of these things attract me to surfing and make it    14     from any other sport.

I¨ve 15     to tell every girl I know to do something that people don¨t think girls can do. It's part of being human to advance to new    16    , so shouldn't it be expected that girls should step up and start    17     the limits of things boys and men used to dominate(麼墸)?

There¨re women 18     side by side with the President of our country, so why not side by side with the boys   19    the football team or out in the water surfing? Give girls a chance to    20    , and they will.
