A hotel worker went on a shooting rampage at a Tampa(坦帕,美国港市) hotel on Thursday, killing four co-workers in the hotel and a woman in a nearby parking lot, police said. The gunman also wounded three people before he was taken into custody (拘留). Police said this latest one in a series of mass (人数极多的) shootings in the United States, began about mid-afternoon at the Radisson Bay Harbour on Courtney Campbell. Witnesses (目击者) described a chaotic (处于混乱状态的)scene as the gunman fired shots in the lobby and pool area of the hotel before commandeering (强取) a car and fleeing. “I came here from New York City to escape the craziness there and wound up in one of the most insane (疯狂的) situations I have ever been in,” a witness to the shootings told local media (大众传媒). Police said the gunman fled to a nearby restaurant parking lot, where he shot and killed a woman and took another car. The gun-man, who had two weapons, was quickly cornered by pursuing (追捕,追赶) police and offered no resistance when he was taken into custody. It was the worst shooting rampages in Tampa since May of 1998, when a man who had been arrested as a suspect (嫌疑犯) in the shooting death of his four-year-old son escaped from police custody and shot to death three police officers. That assailant (攻击者) ,Hank Earl Cart, held police at bay for four hours at a gas station north of Tampa before killing himself.
The hotel killings were the latest in a series of mass shootings in the United States. last month, in the worst mass murder in Hawaii’s history, a 15-year employee of Xerox shot seven men to death at the Honolulu warehouse where he worked. In September a gunman killed seven people at a youth group at the crowded Wedgwood Baptist Church in Texas before turning the gun on himself. And in July a gunman described as a depressed (沮丧的) person killed nine people in Atlanta before turning the gun on himself. He had earlier killed his wife and two children in a suburb.

查看习题详情和答案>>While small may be beautiful, tall is just plain uncomfortable it seems, particularly when it comes to staying in hotels and eating in restaurants.
The Tall Persons Club Great Britain (TPCGB),which was formed six months ago to campaign for the needs of the tall, has turned its attention to hotels and restaurants.Beds that are too small, shower heads that are too low,and restaurant tables with hardly any leg?room all make life difficult for those of above average height,it says.
But it is not just the extra?tall whose needs are not being met.The average height of the population has been increasing yet the standard size of beds, doorways, and chairs has remained unchanged.
“The bedding industry says a bed should be six inches larger than the person using it,so even a king?size bed at 6′6″ (6 feet and 6 inches) is falling short for 25% of men, while the standard 6′3″ bed caters for less than half of the male population,” said TPCGB president Phil Heinricy,“Seven?foot beds would work fine.”
Similarly, restaurant tables can cause no end of problems.Small tables, which mean the long?legged have to sit a foot or so away from them, are enough to make tall customers go elsewhere.
Some have already taken note, however. At Queens Moat Houses’ Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh,6′6″ beds are now put in as standard after requests for longer beds from taller visitors, particularly Americans.????????????? ????????????? ????????????? ????????????? ????????????? ????????????? ????????????? ????????????? ????????????? Though I have traveled in hundreds of trains, few unusual things have ever happened to me. But one day in a train something did happen. I do not mean that I was hurt: no one was hurt.
I do my work in a hot country far away from England. Every September I go there to do my business, and every July I come back to England to have a rest. So every September I go to Paris and take a train from the great French city to Mendova, and at Mendova I catch my ship.
There is one very fast train from Paris to Mendova, and it suits me well. It goes as far as Endoran, but it stops at Mendova for a few minutes to let travelers get out or in. It is called The Flying Bluebird. It reaches Mendova at seven minutes past nine in the morning, and it is never late.
A ship leaves Mendova at half past eleven, and so you will understand that The Flying Bluebird suits me very well. I always travel by it, and I have nearly two and a half hours at Mendova to go from the station to the ship. That is more than enough time.
Well, one September night, I took my place in The Flying Bluebird as usual. The train leaves Paris at nine o’clock every night, and I was in my place soon after half past eight. There were three or four people there with me, but very soon a lot of others got into the train. When no more people could sit down, they began to stand up near us and also in the corridor(走廊). In a short time the corridor was full too, and it was impossible for any more travelers to get into the train.
I could see a lot of other people outside the corridor windows, but they could not get in, and the train left Paris without them. The man sitting next to me started to ask all kinds of questions: “Where do you work? How long does it take you to get there? Are you married? How many children do you have? How much money do they pay you every year? How much do you have in the bank? How much do you spend every month?”
He asked questions for about twenty minutes but I did not give him any clear answers, and at last he stopped and began to read the paper.
I usually sleep quite well in the train, but this time I slept only a little. There were too many people, and there were too many things: small bags, large bags, coats, hats, boxes, newspapers and food. As usual, we got angry about the window. Most people wanted it shut, and two of us wanted it open. But that always happens. It was shut all night, as usual.
When I awoke in the early morning I felt hot and dirty, and glad that the journey was reaching its end. At seven minutes past nine The Flying Bluebird stopped. We were at Mendova, and I stood up thankfully. I took my two suitcases, held one in each hand, and tried to move towards the door into the corridor. In order to get out of the train, I had to pass down the corridor to the door at the far end. There was no other way out.
I could not even into the corridor. There was a suitcase on the floor by my feet, and three men were standing in my way. I felt a touch of fear. I had to get out, you see; I had to catch my ship, which left at half past eleven. And the train did not stop again until it reached Endoran, two hundred miles away.
“I must get out!” I cried. Everyone there understood me, but no one could move.
At last I was able to put one foot over the suitcase on the floor, and I nearly reached the door into the corridor. But then, very slowly, the train began to move. It was taking me away!
“Stop!” I cried. “I want to get out!” But no one outside the train could hear me, and the people inside did not care much. The train moved a little faster. What could I do? I was not even in the corridor.
Fear made me think quickly. In front of my eyes, just, above the door, was a notice that told everyone how to stop the train. I had to pull an iron thing near the notice. I did not waste time. I pulled it.
Well, a noise started above our heads. That was to show everyone that there was something wrong. It was not a small sound. Possibly the men in my ship two miles away could hear it. Then the train stopped.
No one likes to stop a train if there is no need. But I had to catch my ship. That was the only thought in my mind: to get out and catch my ship.

| A.How do we get the names for the days? B.The origin of division of the times. C.How did men invent the week? D.The Jews names the seven days. E.How did the Egyptians and the Romans name the days? F.Reason for no names of the days. |
Do you know how the days of the week get their names? There was a time in the early history of man when the days had no names! The reason was quite simple:men had not invented the week.
2. _____________
In those days, the only division of times was the month, and there were too many days in the month for each of them to have a separate name. But when men began to build cities, they wanted to have a special day on which to trade, a market day. Sometimes these market days were fixed at every tenth day, sometimes every seventh or every fifth day. The Babylonians decided that it should be every seventh day. On this day they didn't work, but met for trade and religious festivals.
3. _____________
The Jews followed their example, but kept every seventh day for religious purposes. In this way the week came into existence. It was the space between market days. The Jews gave each of the seven days a name, but it was really a number after the Sabbath day(which was Saturday). For example, Wednesday was called the fourth day (four days after Saturday).
4. _____________
When the Egyptians adopted the sevenday week, they named the days after five planets, the sun, and the moon. The Romans used the Egyptian names of their days of the week: the day of the sun, of the moon, of the planet Mars(火星), of Mercury(水星), of Jupiter(木星), of Venus(金星), and of Saturn(土星).
5. _____________
We get our names for the days not from the Romans but from the AngloSaxons, who called most of the days after their own gods, which were roughly the same as the gods of the Romans. The day of the sun became Sunnandaeg, or Sunday. The day of the moon was called Monandaeg, or Monday. The day of the Mars became the day of Tiw, who was their god of war. This became Tiwesday, or Tuesday. Instead of Mercury's name, that of the god Woden was given to Wednesday. The Roman day of Jupiter, the thunderer, became the day of the thunder god Thor, and this became Thursday. The next day was named for Frigg, the wife of their god Odin, and so we have Friday. The day of Saturn became Saeterndaeg, a translation from the Roman, the Saturday. 查看习题详情和答案>>
More than seven hundred years ago, the Prince of Wales had a very big and brave dog called Gelert. One day the Prince wanted to go hunt-ing with his men. He told his dog to stay at home and look after his baby son. The baby was in a wooden cradle, which was like a small bed. When the Prince came back from hunt-ing, Gelert ran out to meet his master. He wagged his tail and jumped up to put his paws on the Prince's chest. Then the Prince saw the blood on Gelert's jaws and head.
"What have you done?" the Prince said. He rushed into his house and looked for his baby son. The cradle was lying on its side on the floor. The clothes were torn and there was blood on them.
"So you have killed my son?" the Prince said angrily. "You unfaithful dog!" He took out his sword and killed the dog. Just as Gelert was dying, he managed to bark. Then the Prince heard a baby call to the dog.
The Prince ran out of the house and saw his son lying on the ground unhurt. Near him was a dead wolf. Then the Prince knew that Gelert had defended the baby and killed the wolf.
The Prince ran back into the house but he was too late. Gelert was dead. The Prince was very sad indeed. Tears ran down his face when he realized 'he had killed his faith-ful friend.
