Swimming and other water sports can be great fun Yet 1 people can not swim Many are 2 water They have no confidence (佚伉) in their ability (嬬薦) to learn to swim well

A few years ago, scientists to find out how people learn new skills They found that, 3 ,the first time a person tried a task determined whether or not he would ever be any 4 it For example, if a child tried to rollerskate (刊膨態亂聡甥) for the first time and did it well, then he would probably become 5 rollerskater If he did it badly, then he would probably never good For this reason, it is important that a person's first step at swimming should be successful

Scientists also know that a 6 experience will do harm to a person's confidence For example, if a nonswimmer (掲嗄咯宀) is 7 deep water in fun, it will take him a long time to regain (志鹸) confidence in the water

So learners-swimmers (兜僥嗄咯宀) should take each step 8 The first thing to do is to gain confidence in the water Never jump in at first Sit on the side Better still, walk slowly down the steps into 9 water Try to walk along the side of the bath Duck (値隼詰和) your head under the water, keeping your eyes open 10 Lift your feet off the bottom and let your body float to the surface You will soon be ready to learn to swim

Of all the men who ever liked fresh air, no one like it more than James Wilson He took long walks in the fresh air He ran long distances in the fresh air He played football and other games in the fresh air He liked to climb mountains and breathe the fresh air at the top He used to sit 11 and watch the great waves in the fresh air He always slept with his windows 12 He had an open car with no roof, and he drove it madly through the fresh air

If Wilson entered a room where the windows were shut,he immediately opened them He did this 13 snow was falling outside If someone else shut the windows again, he walked out of the room in a manner which showed his opinions without any doubt When he travelled by sea, he could 14 in a place on board (壓巻貧) where the wild wind was blowing through his hair

One winter Wilson went to Finland (繋声) on business Good hotels in Finland 15 during the cold winter, and this winter was even colder than usual When Wilson reached his room in the hotel, he found that the windows were closed to keep the icy air out He did his best to open one,but 16 It was absolutely (蒸斤) impossible to open it because the manager had very wisely arranged that

Wilson undressed and got into bed He was a very angry man

The bed room was on the 12 Two or three pictures on the walls showed views of some beautiful parts of Finland There was no noise at all The bed was really excellent, but Wilson could not sleep He could not forget the 17 window No fresh air ! It was terrible to think of !

He got 18 and tried once more to open the window, but it was useless, and he sadly got back into bed

At about one o'clock in the morning he was still awake (佰彭) worrying about 19 in the bed room He had turned over bed two hundred and thirtysix times He was very hot As he turned over for the two hundred and thirtyseventh time; one arm came out of the bedclothes and 20 His hand touched the floor It also touched something on the floor This thing was 21

An idea came into his worried mind Angry men 22 and the shoe was in his hand in less than a second Where was the window? He could see something that looked like glass over there He threw the shoe through the darkness with all the force of his strong right hand

The shoe flew straight through the air and 23 A terrible sound of breaking glass 24 the bed room, but to Wilson's sad heart it seemed like the sound of sweet and beautiful music

We arrived 1 Spain for the first time 2 and I decided to buy a car because we had sold 3 we had in England before leaving. Yesterday the sales office rang us 4 the car was ready. I had tried out a model 5 it before but as I was 6 in this city, my wife did not 7 it on my own so we went together to 8 . We paid 9 and signed the papers. They told us that 10 us to a garage, 11 we could fill up. The 12 the office was 13 and we got there safely. But when I turned into the main road I suddenly saw a lot of cars racing towards me. I got 14 15 by backing into the garage 16 and the man behind me shouted at me. " 17 problem to 18 on the right, isn't it?" my wife said. "Yes, if only I 19 a few lessons for practice," I replied, "You 20 go carefully 21 home," my wife said. "You'd be sorry if you had an accident 22 the first day, 23 " While we were talking, the man behind got out of his car and said in good English "Would you 24 me when you are thinking of leaving? Or are you going to sit in your car 25 day?"

It has been difficult to sit on the bench the majority of my high school basketball career. To watch my team from the sideline and 21 ?why I am not good enough to be on the floor. 22 endless hours of work and devotion, pushing myself through drill after drill, the 23 thing I want is to be a cheerleader. The feeling of being 24 is sometimes too much and drives me to 25 on the spot. I often feel as though my efforts are wasted and my time is eaten away, devoted to 26 .

It is heartbreaking to be a spectator(都鉱宀) for the game I love, knowing that no one has enough 27 to give me the chance to 28 on the floor. Tears well up, but I hold them back. I shouldn¨t be so 29 over something so silly.

Away from the game, it¨s easier to put my thoughts together, 30 letting my emotions drive my reasoning. I consider 31 I am where I am. I have played basketball my whole life. I have a passion for the 32 and always have. There is nothing like the excitement of 33 : the swish of the net, the sweat rolling off my cheeks, even the bruises(楳嶐) are battle wounds worn 34 after every game.

Even if I don¨t play much, I participate in every 35 . I am part of a team of girls who

36 together like a family. I am there for them, 37 they are for me.

Should I move on? Or should I stay with my team and pursue my passion just a little longer?
The decision isn¨t difficult when I consider the 38 that being a part of a team brings me! and not just any team, 39 my team. I love basketball and my teammates. When I think about that, my view from the bench really isn¨t so bad 40 .

Although the man who sat with me in the old wooden stairs thirty-five years ago was not a tall man. But to me, a five-year-old child, he was a giant. We would sit side by side, watching the sun go down behind the station across the busy street behind which I was never 1 to cross 2 accompanied by an adult.

One day we sat 3 the traffic ,counting cars and trying to guess the color of the next one to turn the corner to kill time.

Suddenly Grandpa asked ^ 4 ?"

" Yes," was my reply." How would you like to run over to the gas station there and get 5 a bottle of Coke?"

I couldn't believe my 6 . Was he talking to me? On my family's modest income, Coke was not a part of our diet. Without resisting the temptation I replied 7 ," Okay," wondering how I would get across the street. I thought Grandpa was going to go with me. 8 ,after he gave me a dime, he said to me, " Okay, help me down the stairs and to the curb. I'm going to stay 9 and keep an ear out for the babies, who are still asleep. I'll tell you when it's safe to cross. You go over to the Coke machine get your Coke and walk back and then 10 me to tell you when it's safe to cross back."

I was very nervous when Grandpa 11 my hand tightly. Together we looked up the street and 12 , and back up again. He told me it was safe to cross. He 13 my hand and I ran. I ran as fast as possible The street seemed 14 . I wondered if I would 15 it to the other side. Reaching the other side, I 16 to find Grandpa. still standing exactly where I had left him, 17 proudly. I waved.

Coke in hand, I proudly marched back out into the early evening dusk, seeing Grandpa was waiting 18 .

" Stop right there," he yelled 19 one car was speeding by me, after which Grandpa said" Come on, now," At last I crossed the street safely. He smiled on me, saying ^You¨ll do that alone from now on ̄. On hearing this, I 20 felt so proud before.
