Last weekend, my kids along with a few other kids from the neighborhood volunteered to help me wash my carMy 10-year-old daughter came up with the idea of 31 other people¨s cars as wellIt was pretty 32 outside and I had no plans to 33 being in the bright sunShe 34 wanted to give lemonade訂段廿邦to passers-by for freeI had seen little kids 35 and sell fresh lemonade for a small cost but not freeAlthough I felt 36 , I decided to help her

37 she asked me, ^What if we 38 this a smile car wash? ̄ I couldn¨t hold back my tears and 39 her and the other kids to go outside the house and come up with 40 ideasWhile I kept myself busy in drying the car, the gang walked up to me with an 41 with beautiful images of smilesThey had ^Free Car Wash ̄ written on it and the 42 of their exercise was ^smile ̄It was pretty neat to see a team of kids ranging 5-11 years with the 43 to do something for others

All that seemed 44 and came right from their heartNothing seemed to 45 to them: their playtime, the heat outside!they just wanted to 46 others and do something nice in the community!

I helped them make some fresh lemonade and brought out some additional 47 to help clean carsPassers-by were 48 and one even shouted back to them saying ^God Bless You, my kids´ ̄ One of them even tried giving them 5 dollars, which they refusedA pretty heartwarming 49 !

Everyone told me to make my travel preparations early but I thought I had plenty of time I had no idea how much there was to do and I waited too long before I began getting ready

First I had to apply for a passport (擦孚) and visa (禰屬) because I was going to 1 I had to get several inoculations (圓契廣符) at 2 office Then I needed to drop by the bank and get some traveler's checks(屶同)

I first met Annie Mae, a maid (溺突), at my parents-in-laws¨ in 1959. She prepared and 36 meals in her quiet, gentle way and then returned to the kitchen to read her Bible (ゞ淵将〃) while we 37 . She was a devoted Christian. I found this increasingly true 38 I came to know her more by observation than by conversation.

My husband and I 39 visited his parents. Each time I saw her eating 40 , reading her Bible, I wanted to sit down with her and just talk. 41 , whites didn¨t do that with blacks then, and I had to 42 the practice.

In 1965, I decided to 43 the furniture and return to my home state with my two 44 when my husband wanted a divorce (宣脂).

Annie Mae asked if she could buy the boys¨ 45 . When I answered 46 , she asked the price. Then, she asked if she could 47 a little money each month. She was 48 , and I knew her well.

Then each month, an envelope 49 us from Annie Mae with 2 or 3 dollars. A year passed. Annie Mae¨s 50 payment arrived along with the following note:

Dear Mrs. Holladay,

I am sending you my last payment of three dollars for the beds 51 . I told my two sons they could now put the beds 52 and sleep in them, for they are now paid for and rightfully 53 us.Thank you for your 54 .

Annie Mae

I read the note two or three times, my eyes filled with tears. Had I only known earlier, I would have said, ^Use them now. Don¨t 55 until you pay for them. ̄

One Monday morning, the class were excited about the rumor that the science room was on fire over the weekend. Mr. Johnson, my fifth grade teacher 26 it and explained that science class would be cancelled due to the 27 . He also warned us not to go near the room 28 it could be dangerous.

During the morning break, Kim and I 29 to check out the damage. A first hand observation would make us heroes at lunch. We safely 30 the science room. We stood on tiptoes(重錫) looking hard through the door window 31 to see what was like inside when suddenly a firm hold on our shoulders stopped us.

^Where do you belong? Certainly not here! ̄

I turned around to find a teacher staring 32 at us, shouting. In those frozen seconds millions of 33 flashed through my mind. My father would kill me for disobeying teachers. 34 than that, my mother might be so mad that she might not stop him. My spirits 35 even lower when I thought of how angry Mr. Johnson would be. Soon the arresting teacher led Kim and me back to the 36 , leaving us trembling before Mr. Johnson .

But to our 37 , there was no yelling and no anger from Mr. Johnson. 38 , he bent slowly to look me in the eye. I was met with a look of 39 rather than anger. He spoke softly and carefully as he explained why he was 40 in my decision to go where I might have got 41 . As I looked into the eyes of the man who could send me to unimagined consequences at home, tears 42 up in my eyes. The thought of disappointing Mr. Johnson 43 me while I felt a gentle touch of Mr. Johnson¨s hand on my shoulder. I glanced up and he smiled. My 44 for Mr. Johnson grew greatly in the moment I discovered that he still liked me even after I¨d disappointed him. I could see that he cared more about my 45 than the fact that I¨d broken a rule. It was the first time I had felt the power of forgiveness.
