Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. However, you can receive better grades if you want.Yes, even students with average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here's how:

1.Plan your time carefully.Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule of your time.Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments.Of course, studying shouldn't occupy all of the free time on the schedule.

2.Make good use of your time in class.Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later.Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.

3.Skim before you read.Look over a passage, quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized.Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions; Skimming helps double your reading speed and improve your comprehension as well.

4.________.Go over your notes as soon as you can after class.Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused. If you know what the teacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material, too.If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer.Regular review leads to improved performance on tests.

5.Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't worry excessively(过分地)about a single test.

In 1931, it was discovered that some unknown substance present only in certain foods was necessary for good health. This substance was what is now called “Vitamin A”.

Vitamin A's biggest job is to keep the eyes going. Without it, people and animals get “night blindness” and eye problems. Lack of Vitamin A for a long time can even cause total blindness, particularly among children. This had a chance to be tested in Denmark during World Was I. Because of food shortage, many children had to eat man-made butter and skim milk(脱脂奶), which contains no Vitamin A. Soon, they developed eye diseases. It was after they were given real butter and whole milk that they had no eye problems.

After Vitamin A was discovered, it took more than thirty years of experiments for scientists to be able to get a small amount of pure Vitamin A. Vitamin A is manufactured and is used successfully to treat a number of diseases. You can easily get enough Vitamin A by eating a variety of food. Good sources of Vitamin A are liver(肝脏) from some animals and dairy products such as milk and cream. Not only many vegetables contain carotene(胡萝卜素), from which your liver can make its own Vitamin A, some fruits also provide carotene which helps your liver to supply Vitamin A. As long as you are getting Vitamin A from food you won't need to take any extra in the form of liquid or pills.

A.The war they experienced.

B.Their poor housing conditions.

D.The lack of Vitamin A in their food.

(4) According to the text, the following are all good sources of Vitamin A except _______.

Sheela spent three days memorizing a poem for an oral test, but her friend Nisha merely scanned a new poem twice before reciting it from memory! Why then was there a difference?Nisha just knew how to learn better than Sheela. She had increased the ability of her brain by using some skills. Here are some steps to better learning.

Preview the matter first:That is, don’t plunge your head long into reading new, unfamiliar material. You can understand more if you first scan it or skim over it quickly.Read the first sentence of each paragraph, and glance at the table of contents and the preface.

Slow down and read it aloud to yourself:Speed reading is fine for easy material but for more complex works, slower reading is much more effective.Good learners vocalize(发声), either loudly or in their minds, listening to each word as they read. They also actively think about what they read and take in it.

Organize facts into categories:For instance, if you have to memorize a jumbled list containing names of animals, types of transport, items of clothing and kinds of jobs, it is easier if you divide them into groups or categories.Dividing it into smaller, meaningful parts makes it easier to learn.

Be focused:To improve concentration(专心)and focus, fix a particular time and place for studying.Use a variety of methods, like writing down what you’ve read or taping it and then listening to it, or making an outline.

Follow your own learning style:Each person has his own way of learning.lf given the pieces of an object to assemble(集合), each of us uses a different method to arrive at the same result.Analyze your approach and follow the method that you feel most comfortable with.

  阅读理解:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项.

Testing has replaced teaching in most public schools. Pretests, drills, tests, and retests fill my own children's school week. They know that the best way to read a textbook is to look at the questions at the end of the chapter and then skim the text for the answers. I believe that my daughter Erica, who gets excellent marks, has never read a chapter of any of her school textbooks all the way through. And teachers are often heard to state proudly and openly that they teach to the mandated state test. Teaching to the test is a curious phenomenon. Instead of deciding what skills students ought to learn, helping students learn them, and then using some sensible methods of assessment(评价) to discover whether students have mastered the skills, teachers are encouraged to reverse the process. First one looks at a test, which is intended for money. Then one chooses the skills needed not to master reading, but to do well in the test. Finally, the test skills are taught.

The ability to read or write or calculate might imply the ability to do reasonably well on standardized tests. However neither reading nor writing develops simply through being taught to take tests. We must be careful to avoid mistaking preparation for a test of a skill with the acquisition (习得) of that skill. Too many discussions of basic skill make this misunderstanding because people are only interested in the test rather than concerned with the nature and quality of what is taught.

Recently, many schools have faced what could be called the crisis of comprehension or, in simple terms, the phenomenon(现象)of students with grammar skills still being unable to understand what they read. These students are quite good at test taking and filling in workbooks. However, they have little or no experience reading or thinking, and talking about what they read. They know the details but can't see or understand the whole. They are taught to be so concerned with grade that they have no time or ease of mind to think about meaning, and reread things if necessary.

1.The author gives an account of Erica's performance in her study in order to show ________.

[ ]

A.her cleverness in test-taking

B.the incompetence of teachers

C.there is something wrong with the current practice in teaching

D.the best way to read textbooks

2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

[ ]

A.The phenomenon of teaching to the test has aroused curiosity in many educators.

B.Skills in general are not only useless but often mislead students.

C.Ability to read and write is one thing, and ability to do well on standardized tests is quite another.

D.Preparation for test of a skill does not necessarily mean the acquisition of that skill.

3.The author insists that ________.

[ ]

A.mandated state tests be replaced by some more sensible methods of assessment

B.teachers pay more attention to the nature and quality of what is taught

C.students not be concerned with grades but do more reading and thinking

D.main changes be brought about in the general teaching

4.By “crisis of comprehension” the author means many students ________.

[ ]

A.are too much concerned with grades

B.fail to understand the real goal of education

C.lack proper practice in grammar drills

D.are unable to understand what they read, though they do reasonably well on standardized tests

Let’s do some sleep math. You lost two hours of sleep every night last week because of a big project due on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, you slept in,getting four extra hours. On Monday morning, you were feeling so bright-eyed that you only had one cup of coffee, instead of your usual two.But don’t be cheated by your energy. You’re still carrying around a heavy load of sleepiness,or what experts call “sleep debt”-in this case something like six hours, almost a full night’s sleep.

Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. It’s a shortage that grows every time we skim some extra minutes off our nightly sleep.“People get more sleep debt gradually without being noticed,”says William C.Dement, founder of the Stanford University Sleep Clinic.Studies show that such short-term sleep lack leads to a foggy brain, worsened vision, and trouble remembering.Long-term effects include obesity(肥胖),insulin(胰岛素)resistance, and heart disease.A survey by the National Sleep Foundation reports that we’re losing one hour of sleep each night-more than two full weeks of sleep every year.

The good news is that, like all debt, with some work, sleep debt can be repaid.Adding an extra hour or two of sleep a night is the way to catch up.For the long-term lack of sleep, relax for a few months to get back into a natural sleep pattern.Go to bed when you are tired, and allow your body to wake you in the morning(no alarm clock allowed). You may find yourself catatonic(有紧张症的)in the beginning of the recovery cycle:Expect to have ten hours’ shut-eye per night; As the days pass, however, the amount of sleeping time will gradually decrease.

So earn back that lost sleep and follow the rules of your innate(固有的)sleep needs. You’ll feel better.“When you put away sleep debt, you become a superman,”says Stanford's Dement, talking about the improved mental and physical capabilities that come with being well rested.

(1)

If you have short-term sleep lack, you may _________.

[ ]

A.

have a poor sight

B.

get heart disease

C.

hate eating food

D.

put on weight

(2)

The example of sleep math is used to show

[ ]

A.

why you need six hours’sleep every night

B.

in what way you can make up for lack of sleep

C.

why you are energetic even without enough sleep

D.

in what case you build up a sleep debt

(3)

By saying the underlined sentence, Dement means that _________.

[ ]

A.

you need a lot of sleep to be a superman

B.

you need to be a superman to repay sleep debt

C.

you will be in a good state with enough sleep

D.

you will become a superman with more sleep debt

(4)

What might be the most suitable title for the passage?

[ ]

A.

How can you keep energetic?

B.

Can you make up for the lost sleep?

C.

What is sleep debt?

D.

Can coffee refresh you?
