Back in the late 1950’s, I grew up in a small village in the Cotswolds. There was 16　 else

to do but read and write. As a teenager, I wanted to hear from people who lived in 　 17　 countries and see how they lived and what their 　18　 was like. I got, from a magazine, the 　　　19 of one teenager called Glenys, like me who wanted to have a pen-pal. She 　20　 in North Island, New Zealand.

Glenys and I wrote to each other via blue airmail letters 　　21　 there were no computers then! Sometimes it was so 　 22　 because a proper letter would arrive with photographs and newspaper　 23　 ,showing each other how different our lives were－but strangely enough－very 　24　 in some aspects(方面). We married, had children at about the same time. Over the years we 　25　 lots of heartbreak , tears and laughter. My　 26　 died－so did Glenys’. We cheered each other up during these times and both 　　27　 . She is leading a happy life with her second husband Brian. I am enjoying my new marriage life to the full.

What a wonderful time I had there!

On Sunday while I was having my own Father’s Day celebration, I thought about my dad a lot. By the time I called to tell him that I loved him, he had already gone to bed. So I wrote the following to show what my dad means to me.

About 28 years ago, my dad was a used car salesman. Every Thursday night, he would head off to Shreveport, LA for the auction（拍卖会）. Most of the time, I drove a car over there for him so he could sell it there.

One day, I was riding with my dad to Shreveport for the auction when he found a hitchhiker（搭车者）with a backpack. As soon as dad saw him, he pulled the car over and offered him a ride. Dad asked him his name and continued to talk to him about all sorts of things. I can’t recall why but he told dad a lot of terrible things that had occurred to him. I sat in the back seat and watched the scene with amazement. I could see that the hitchhiker changed his attitude as he could tell someone who was really listening to him.

We drove another forty-five minutes before we had to exit the interstate（州际公路）. We pulled over and dad told him to keep his head up and things would start looking up for him soon. He reached into his pocket and handed the hitchhiker a twenty-dollar bill and then a the-dollar bill.

We drove on and my dad did not say a single thing. I was still completely amazed by what I just witnessed. I was always told everyone to never pick up a hitchhiker and yet my dad did it every single time he saw one. I’m sure that it made that poor man’s day, probably a month to follow.

While reflecting upon that story, I learned a lot about my dad and life. I learned that if you come from a place of service or compassion, you can change people’s lives. Just one single kind act can change someone’s life. It never occurred to my dad about not stopping to help him.

This is the type of person my dad is. Thank you for setting such high standards for me to follow.

It's a small gas station that has snacks, drinks, cigarettes and candies. The young man behind thecounter knows his   l    by name and what they normally want to buy. He treats children andadults with equal    2    He reads scicnce fiction behind the counter when business is   3    .

One day, three people rushed in and grabbed food off the shelves as fast as they could,   4   not intending to pay for it. He hit the “panic button”, then went over the counter and locked the front door. It was obvious they were homeless, and equally obvious that they weren't going anywhere with their ill-gotten gains. They   5  the food and simply crowded together in panic --- knowing the police were on the way.

Imagine what they must have felt like when they were told they didn't have to steal if they were   6    .“We have food in the back， expired but still Safe to eat. If you need food, you can have some.”

     They Were told to pick up what they had dropped and put it back， and then asked to straighten out the mess. They were doing just that when the police arrived. The officers were told the situation was under control and the police were no longer7

The Colonel asks Ashenden a good many questions and then suggested that he had particular qualifications for the Secret Service. Ashenden knew several European languages and the fact that he was a writer provided excellent cover: on the pretext that he was writing a book he could, without attracting attention, visit any neutral country.

   It was while they were discussing this point that the Colonel said, "You know you might get material that would be very useful to you in your work. I'll tell you an incident that occurred only recently. Very dramatic. A foreign government minister went down to a Mediterranean resort to recover from a cold and he had some very important documents with him that he kept in a dispatch case(公文箱). A day or two after he arrived, he picked up a beautiful blonde at some restaurant or other, and he got very friendly with her. He took her back to his hotel, and when he came to himself in the morning, the lady and the dispatch-case had disappeared. They had one or two drinks up in his room and his theory is that when his back was turned the woman slipped a drug in his glass.

   "Do you mean to say that happened the other day?" said Ashenden.

   "The week before last."

   "Impossible," cried Ashenden. "Why! We've been putting that incident on the stage for sixty years, we've written it in a thousand novels. Do you mean to say that life has only just caught up with us?"

   "Well, I can guarantee the truth of the story." said the Colonel, "And believe me, the government has been put to no end of trouble by the loss of the documents."

   "Well sir, if you can't do better than that in the Secret Service," sighed Ashenden, " I'm afraid that as a source of inspiration to the writer of fiction, it's washout."

"Extra? Extra！Gasoline hits four dollars a gallon!”

??? No one will really be shocked一except, perhaps, the old-timers who tell about the good old days when gas was three gallons for a dollar, and people drove around "just for the fun of it".

As a matter of fact; the price of gas has been rising fast and steadily for several years, and many adjustments have already been made.

??? There was, for a time, considerable unemployment in the auto industry, and three quarters of the garages and service stations have gone out of business. The factories that haven't switched over to two-wheel transportation are working on their new smaller models. And many people who have seldom used public transportation are now riding the streetcars while their automobiles rust（生锈）in their garages. There's no market at all for their big, luxurious cars, for only the wealthy can now afford to operate them. Many people are now shopping in their own neighborhood, and small businesses are thriving.

??? Ministers, educators, and editorial writers are pointing out that there has been a great improvement in family life. Families now stay at home more for their fun, and children and parents are becoming better acquainted. The stores report a booming business in parlor games, hobby materials, books, musical instruments and albums.

??? People have lost their pale indoor look. The revival of the lost art of walking has brought a healthy pink back to many a cheek. This return to the heels has revolutionized the clothing styles; people now need to be ready for all kinds of weather:

??? These conditions, however, may not last. Already our clever chemists are at work on new synthetic fuels which, they say, will put us right back where we were一on wheels. Shall w e wish them success or not?
