When I was in high school, I had a recurring(反复的) dream of my teeth falling out. I dreamt about my teeth just about every night for at least three weeks. Sometimes they would fall out one at a time, sometimes all at once. I became terrified that my dreams meant I would actually lose my teeth. Nine years later and about a million trips to the dreams, I still have a full set of teeth, but I’ve learned that when we’re experiencing stress in our lives, it tends to show up in our dreams as well.

Some years ago I took on a task in a southern county to work with people on public welfare. What I
wanted to do was to show that everybody has the capacity to be self sufficient and all we have to do is to activate(激励)them. I asked the country to pick up a group of people who were on public welfare,
people from different racial groups and different family groups. I would then see them as a group for three
hours every Friday. I also asked for a little petty cash to work with, as I needed it.

One woman said to me, “I don’t know what you can do with dreams. The rats are eating up my
kids.”
“Oh,” I said, “That’s terrible. No, of course, you are very much involved with the rats and your

“Well, I could use a new screen door because there are holes in my screen door.” I asked, “Is there
anybody around here who know how to fix a screen door?”
There was a man in the group and he said, “A long time ago I used to do things like that but now I
have a terribly bad back, but I’ll try.”
I told him I had some money if he would go to the store and but some screening and go and fix the
lady’s screen door. “Do you think you can do that?”
“Yes, I’ll try.”
The next week, when the group was seated. I said to the woman, “Well, is your screen door fixed?”
“Oh, yes.” she said.
“Then we can start dreaming, can’t we?” she sort of smiled at me.
I said to the man who did the work, “How do you feel?”
He said, “Well, you know, it’s very funny thing. I’m beginning to feel a lot better.”
That helped the group to begin to dream. These seemingly small successes allowed the group to see
that dreams were not insane. These small steps began to get people to see and feel that something really
could happen.
Everyone found something. The man who put in the screen door became a handyman. In 12 weeks, I
had all those people off public welfare. I’ve not only done that once, I’ve done that in many times.

It’s not entirely true that kids learn a second language easily, but it’s still the best time to learn. Babies are basically equipped to hear and distinguish every possible language and dialect, but once they reach 6 months old, they begin to focus on the particular sounds that exist in the languages that they’re exposed to. In this way, kids will naturally and automatically be bilingual(双语的) if they hear multiple languages on a daily basis when they are still babies..
One lady told me of her son who grew up in a very multi-cultural community working at a resort. He would naturally and easily switch from Dutch, to French, to Italian, German and English depending on who he was talking to. Of course that’s an extreme case, but it’s completely possible and easy.
It’ s not true that they will get mixed up by learning multiple languages. They may mix them up purposely simply because certain words or expressions are easier, but they won’t develop any permanent language disabilities. Quite the contrary, bilingual children have been shown to be as much as a year more advanced in learning ability development for 2 and 3 years olds.
Some kids who simply aren’t gifted at learning languages, just as some aren’t gifted at sports or music, will find it difficult to continue schooling in a foreign language. In that case, it may be better not to continue with the foreign language school. Still, it will have been an excellent opportunity for Grade One. Perhaps for Grade Two you could try a bilingual school.
In any case, learning even a small amount of a foreign language, maintaining the ability to hear and pronounce it by listening to music and movies will keep a foundation for later learning. Knowing a second language can be a great benefit for gaining employment.
