完形填空。
There are seas, lakes and forests on the earth. There are cities, towns and farms, too. All these things
are environments. The environment is everything around you. It can be living (有生命的), like a forest.
It can be non-living (无生命的),   1   a rock or a mountain.
No living thing can live alone. Every living thing depends (依赖于) on other things in its environment.
When something   2  , it affects (影响) something else. If a non-living; thing like water becomes   3   to
find, plants will be affected. If all plants   4  , the animals that eat plants will be affected.
Weather, such as temperature, wind and rain, can change an environment.   5   can change an
environment, too. Some things that people do cause no change or only a small change in the environment.
For example, people can walk through the forest and just travel around. They can cut down only a few
trees and   6   change the environment very much. On the other hand, some things that people do
cause   7   changes. Sometimes they can change a whole environment by cutting down a forest.
Not all changes are bad. If we cut down a forest to build houses or plant crops, this may not be bad.
But what would happen if we cut down all trees in all forests or if we didn't   8   them and plant something
else?
It is clear that people are able to change an environment. This is why it is important to think about the
changes before we make   9  . Let's work together to  10  it clean and healthy.

Many years ago, there were lots of trees on earth, because summer lasted a whole year. What was the forest like? It is not difficult to see, because parts of that ancient(古老的)forest still stand. It is the rainforest. Here, even in a sunny day water drops through the leaves.

Today's largest rainforest is in South America. It covers about a million square miles. All the trees are very tall;the young trees are nearly sixty feet high. But it is not easy for some to grow higher because very little sunlight leaches them.

Many trees are about 60 to 120 feet high. Some are even taller. The tallest trees can be 200 feet high.

In this forest of tall trees, plant life is rich, animal life is rich, too. At different heights live different animals and many different noises can let you know where they are.

In these years, northern China is often hit by sandstorms. One of the reasons is that people are still cutting down more and more trees. As a result, a lot of good land has gone with them, leaving only sand.

People suffered(遭受)a lot from sandstorms. When they came, car and bus drivers had to drive slowly:they could hardly see the road in front of them even during the day-time. In the year 2000, a very strong sandstorm happened in a certain city. It was one of the worst sandstorms that lasted nearly 2 hours. People couldn't see their hands before them. The streets were almost empty. The smell from the sandstorm was very bad. Some people disappeared in the sandstorm.

Luckily, people in China begin to understand the terrible result. The Chinese government and people are trying their best to fight against sandstorms. They not only stop the people from cutting down trees, but plant more and more trees everywhere.

Now, China has built the Great Wall across the northern part of the country. It will stop the wind from blowing the earth away. It will stop the sand form moving towards the rich farmland in the south. It has already saved a lot of land. But more “Great Green Walls” are still needed. They hope in a few years' time the whole country will be covered by forests.

(1) In 2000, there was a strong sandstorm in a town.

( )

(2) People can't do anything to do with the sandstorm.

( )

(3) In ten years' time, China will may be covered by forests.

( )

(4) Sandstorms may be caused by people.

( )

(5) Chinese build the Great Wall across the western part.
