摘要:Should Parents Spy On Their Children? As usual, Jim got home from school at 5 p.m. Yet as soon as he went into his room, he noticed that his diary was touched. He became angry and shouted at his parents. This was not the first time when such a thing happened. Since Jim entered high school, his parents have been keeping tabson him, watching every step he moved. They tried every means to make sure that Jim was not out of trackat school. They searched his room. They went through his pockets. They listened to his phone calls. Jim pretended to know nothing about it. But recently, he found that they began to read his diary. This had gone too far. How could they do so without his consent ? To preventhis diary from being read, Jim got himself a diary book with a lock on it. One day, Jim talked about it with his parents. However, they insisted that they simply wanted to protect him. They said that they just wanted to make sure that Jim was not doing anything wrong. It might be reasonable for them to think that way, but in Jim’s view, parents should respecttheir children and trust them. If his parents need to find something out, they can just ask him and then he will let them know. Spying on children will simply do more harm to the parents-children relationship. What do you think?

Now and then we all get ill. Then we usually go to see a doctor. Doctors know a lot about what makes us ill. They may give us something to take. The medicine often makes us well again.
But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. A sick person does not get well. The pain doesn’t go away. There was such man. He was in hospital, but he wasn’t well. Then he found a new “doctor” inside himself. This “doctor” was his own sense of humor(幽默). He saw funny films. He read funny books. And he liked to learn something interesting. Laughing took away his pain. Then he was able to sleep and rest. His own happy feeling helped him to feel well again. And he told his story in a book. He said that laughing was his best “medicine”. His doctor thought so, too.
Another man was ill, and he had a terrible pain in his back. The doctors could not stop it from hurting. So the man began to “picture” his pain. In his head he “drew” a picture of a dog. He imagined(想象) it as a real dog. And it was biting(咬) his back. It was hurting him. Then the man talked softly to the dog. He put his hand on the dog’s head. He made friends with the dog. And his pain went away!
These stories may surprise you. But more and more people are getting well in this way. So call on the “doctor” inside your own head. And stay happy and well!

Like most English children, I learned foreign languages at school. When I made my first visit to the United States, I was sure I could have a nice and easy holiday without any language problem. But how wrong I was!
At the American airport, I was looking for a public telephone to tell my friend Danny that I had arrived. An American asked if he could help me. "Yes," I said, '1 want to give my friend a ring."
"Well, that's nice. Are you getting married?" he asked. "No," I replied, "I just want to tell him I have arrived." "Oh," he said, "there is a phone downstairs on the first floor." "But we're on the first floor now," I said.
"Well, I don't know what you are talking about Maybe you aren't feeling too well after your journey," he said. "Just go and wash up, and you will feel a lot better." And he went off, leaving me wondering where on earth I was: At home we wash up after a meal to get the cups and plates clean. How can I wash up at an airport?
At last we did meet. Danny explained the misunderstanding: Americans say "to give someone a call", but we English say "to give somebody a ring". When we say "to wash your hands", they say "to wash up". And Englishmen start numbering from the ground floor so the first floor is the second for Americans.
