Modern life is impossible without travelling．The fastest way of travelling is by plane．With a modern airliner(客机) it takes one day to travel to places which took a month or more to get to a hundred years ago．

Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but it has its advantages(优点)．You can see the country you are travelling through．Modern trains have comfortable(舒适的) seats and dining cars．They make even the longest journey enjoyable．

Some people prefer to travel by sea when possible．There are large liners and river boats．You can visit many other countries and different parts of your country on them．Ships are not as fast as trains or planes, but travelling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday．

Many people like to travel by car．You can make your own timetable．You can travel three or four hundred miles or only fifty or one hundred miles a day, just as you like．You can stop wherever you like-where there is something interesting to see,in a good restaurant where you can enjoy a good meal,or at a hotel where you can spend the night．That is why travelling by car is a popular pleasant trip, while people usually take a train or a plane when they are travelling on business．

Do you know something about tree rings(年轮)? Do you know they can tell us what the weather was like, sometimes even hundreds of years ago?

A tree will grow well in a climate(气候)with lots of sunshine and rainfall．And little sunshine or rainfall will limit(限制)the growth of climate by studying the tree rings．For example, to find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree from the outside to the inside．If the tenth ring is far from the eleventh ring, then we’re sure that it was sunny and rainy most of that year．If it is near to the eleventh ring, then the climate that year was bad．

Tree rings are important not only for studying the history of weather but also for studying the history of man．Many centuries ago there lived a lot of people at a place in New Mexico．But now you can find only sand there－no trees and no people．What happened?
