One day after class, she noticed that I was staying alone during the lunch break. She came to me and began to talk to me. It was just a conversation. After that day, she gave me particular attention and it made me feel special. I started to work hard because she gave me the feeling that believed me, and my started to improve in her subject.
Months later, she moved into a house near my . We would walk home together after school. Her constant support helped me, especially in my studies, as I knew she would my grades both in her subject and the other subjects. I finally second in my class.
Then, after Grade Six, she started to slowly drift away(疏远), still kept a constant check on me. By the time I was in Grade Seven, we spoke, but by then I had become the in my class. When I left my school, I was out of touch with her, as she never answered the when I called her.
Then I graduated and went to a good university. One fine day, our paths crossed again. I met her at a wedding. I could not asking her, "Why did you stop talking to me?" "You are a clever boy. I wanted you to be a tree standing on your roots, not depending on others. Now here you are and I feel of you. You are your inspiration(启发灵感的人) and do not need to a shoulder." she said. I could not say anything, but I smiled. I'll always thank her .

One day, my mother was sewing* a quilt. I quietly sat down beside her.
“Is there love you and Dad?” asked I.
With a little surprise in her eyes, my mother stopped to raise her head and me. She said for long time. At last I heard my mother’s voice:
“Jane,” she said, “Look at this thread*. sometimes it appears, most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and lasting. If life is a quilt, then should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there, and disappears.”
I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her the next spring, when my father suddenly got seriously. My mother had to look after him in the hospital for a month. When they home, every day in the morning and evening, my mother helped my father walk slowly. They often walked without a word. And after two months, my father still couldn’t walk by . All of us were worried about him very much.
“Dad, are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Jane, nothing serious. To tell you the truth, I just like with your mom. I like this kind of life, even if I cannot walk anymore.” Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant good presents and sweet kisses. But now, I understand that love is just like a thread in the quilt. Love is inside, making our nice and warm.

The volunteers who brought the nine-year-old to the orphanage* knew little about her. The streets where they found her had been her home for many years. Her parents were unknown. They had left her long ago.
At the orphanage, the girl, like all the children there, was taught to read and write. While she was studying at the orphanage, she learned something else -- to be independent*. At twenty-one, she left the orphanage and began work as a secretary.
And then, in 1975, while she was still working as a common secretary, something very unusual happened. She entered the Miss Hong Kong competition -- and won it. This was the turning point in her life. Now Mary Cheung was very popular in Hong Kong.
Mary entered the competition because she was full of ambitions* and because she wanted to show that orphanage girls could be something. Winning the competition gave her the chance to start a new life. This led her first into television and then to a business manager. When she was working as a manager, she had trouble with her reports. “My English just wasn’t good enough,” she said. Fortunately, she had a boy-friend (who later became her husband) to help her.
Mary studied management at Hong Kong Polytechnic and graduated in 1980. She started her own company in 1995. But she was still working hard to develop herself. She then studied for a Fine Arts degree at the University of Hong Kong. Her ambition was to teach arts in Hong Kong. Since 1987, she has spent a lot of her time on photography. She has held several exhibitions of her work in many places, including China, New Zealand and Paris. She still found time, however, to work on TV and for charity, to write for newspapers and bring up her family.
The girl from street has come a long way, but her journey is not finished yet.

A. was known well B. lived with her parents

2______ was the turning point in Mary’s life.

A. Mary has travelled a lot
B. Mary is very tired because she has run a long way
C. Mary is always hard-working and she has made a great success
D. Mary needs to have a rest because she has made a great success
4 From the passage we can learn that ______.

B. Mary never stopped developing herself all the time
