I am my mother’s third child. When I was born, her doctor gently explained to her that my left arm was missing, below the elbow. Then he gave her some advice: “Don’t treat her any differently from the other girls. Demand more.” And she did!
My mother had to work to support our family. There were five girls in our family and we all had to help out. Once when I was about seven, I came out of the kitchen and said, “Mum, I can’t peel potatoes. I only have one hand.”
“You get back to peel those potatoes, and don’t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!”
Of course I could peel potatoes—with my good hand, while holding them down with my other arm. There was always a way, and Mom knew it. “If you try hard enough,” she’d say, “you can do anything.”
Once in the second grade, our teacher had each of us race across the monkey bars(单杠). When it was my turn, I shook my head. Some kids laughed. I went home crying.
After work the next afternoon, Mom took me back to the school playground.
“Now, pull up with your right arm,” she advised. She stood by as I practiced, and she praised me when I made progress.
I’ll never forget the praised time when I was crossing the bars. The kids were standing there with their mouths open.
It was the way with everything. When I fear I can’t deal with things, I see Mom’s smile again. She had the heart to face anything. And she taught me I could, too.

查看习题详情和答案>>Can you imagine a classroom without one thing that has long been considered a necessary part? No notebooks, no textbooks, no test papers. Nor are there any pencils or pens, which always seem to run out of ink at the critical moment.
A “Paperless classroom” is what more and more schools are trying to realize. Students don’t do any handwriting in this class. Instead, they use hand-sized or specially-designed computers. The teacher downloads texts from Internet libraries and sends them to every student’s personal computer.
Having computers also means that students can use the Web. They can look up information on any subject they’re studying, from maths to social science.
A high school teacher, Judy Herrel in Florida, US, described how her class used the Web. “Using a book that’s three or four years old is impossible,” she said.
A paperless classroom is a big step towards reducing the waste of paper.
“Think about the money and trees we could save with the computers,” she said.
But, with all this technology, there’s always a risk that the machines will break down. So, in case of a power failure or a technical problem, paper textbooks should still be widely available (可得到的) for these students.

| In the past, many people used horses for traveling, farming and other kinds of work. A lot of people still like to ride horses. And horse racing is also popular. So it is not surprising that Americans use this animal when they talk. Long ago, rich or important people rode horses which were very tall. Today, if a girl acts like she is better than everyone else, you might say she should get off her high horse. Yesterday my children wanted me to take them to the playground. But I had to finish my work, so I said. "Hold your horses. Wait until I finish what I am doing." My two boys like to compete against each other and play in a noisy and not very careful way. I always tell them to stop horsing around or someone could get hurt. Last night, I got a telephone call while I Was watching my favourite TV show. I decided not to answer it because wild horses could not drag (拖, 拽) me away from the television. There was nothing that could stop me from doing what I wanted to do. Sometimes you get information straight from the horse's mouth. Let us say your teacher tells you there is going to be a test tomorrow. You could say you got the information straight from the horse's mouth. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink. That means you can give someone advice but you cannot force him to do something he does not want to do. | |
