How much paper do you use every year? Maybe you can't answer this question quickly. In 1990, the world's use of paper was about one kilogram for each person in a year. Now some countries use as 50 kilograms of paper for each person in a year. But countries like America, England and Sweden, certainly use more paper than other countries.
Paper was first made in China about 2000 years ago. It was made from the hairlike parts of certain plants. Paper was not made in southern Europe until about the year 1100. In 1500, a German named Schaeffer found out that one could make the best paper from trees. After that, the forest countries of Canada, Sweden, America and Finland became the most important ones in paper making.
When we think of paper, we think of newspapers, books and writing-paper. But there are many other uses. Only half of the paper is used for books and magazines. Paper is very good for keeping you warm. You may see some people asleep on a large number of newspapers. They're insulating themselves from the cold. In Finland the temperature is sometimes --40 centigrade
(摄氏). The farmers wear paper boots in the snow. Nothing could be warmer. Each year more and more things are made of paper. We have had paper cups and plates for a long time. Now we hear that chairs, tables and even beds can be made of paper. With paper boots and shoes, you can wear paper hats, paper dresses and paper raincoats. When you have used them once, you throw them away and buy new ones.
People have made paper boats, but they haven't made planes or cars. Just wait--they perhaps will some day.

1. Taxi drivers: $2 to $3; you give more if he helps you with your bags.
2. Porters (搬运工): A standard tip (标准的小费) for porters is $1 each bag; more if your suitcases are
very heavy.
3. Hotel bellboy (青年侍者): Again, $1 for each bag. Tip him when he shows you to your room.
4. Doorman (看门人): A $1 tip for calling a taxi. However, you may tip more for special service, such
as shielding (挡住) you with an umbrella in the rain. You don't have to give the doorman anything just
for opening the door or greeting you.
5. Hotel maid (女佣): If you stay for more than one night, $1 each night is standard.
6. Waiters and waitresses: 15-20% of your pre-tax (税前的) bill. In restaurants and bars in the US and
Canada, 15% is the standard tip.
7. Tour guides (导游): If a tip is not included in your bill, tip $1 for half-day tour, $2 for a one-day tour,
and anywhere from $5 to $10 for a week-long tour.
Now, it's sad to say that people have to give tips, even though the service is not good at all. So if you go
to the US, remember to carry a lot of change (零钱) for tips.
1. If a taxi driver helps you with your bag, you should pay for $3 tips.
2. Tip the hotel bellboy dollars if you have 3 bags to carry and you do not need him to show you
to your room.
3. If a doorman the door or you, you needn't give the doorman anything.
4. You should give at least dollars to the tour guide if you want a week-long tour.
5. You should give dollars to a tour guide if you need a one-day tour.

Today was a day I wish I did not get out of bed. I mean that if I did not have to wake up and deal with all
the things that I have to deal with every day, it would have been wonderful.
I had a cup of coffee this morning and that was my meal for breakfast, not healthy I know. Anyway,
my stomach was sounding like a truck. So, I jumped in my car and decided to buy some food.
I was in line at Taco Bell and the line was like a long snake! Finally I got to place my order, but a young
girl in nice clothes pulled in (汽车停靠) and was stuck (被困住) in such a way that unless I moved for her,
she wouldn't be able to get out. So I backed up (倒车) and waved her into my place in the front of the line.
I was surprised that this young girl did not say thanks. I was a little unhappy about it because I thought
that I had done something nice for a change. After the girl received her food and drove away, I pulled into
the ordering spot, not mad but hungry, and the employee said, "Hi, that girl just paid for your food."
That food was the most satisfying nourishment (营养品) my body had ever taken! If just by chance you
are that person who bought my food, I should say "Thank you!"
