Everyone has experienced trying, but failing to master a difficult book that was begun with the hope of increasing one's understanding. When that happens, it is1to think that it was a mistake to try to read it, but that was not the mistake. The mistake was in2too much from the first reading of a(n)3book. If you read it in the right way, no book written for the4reader, no matter how difficult, need be a cause for despair(令人失望).
What is the right method? The5is an important and helpful rule of reading that is either not6or often forgotten. That rule is simply this: when reading a difficult book for the first time, read it through without ever7to think about the things that you do not understand immediately.
Do not be stopped by what you8understand. Read through the difficult9,and you soon come to things that you do understand. Read these10.You will have a much better chance of understanding all of the book when you read it again, but that11you to have read the book through once12.
What you understand by reading the book through to the13will help you when you try later to read the places that you did not14in your first reading. Or if you never re-read the book, understanding half of it is much better than understanding15of it, which will happen16you allow yourself to be stopped by the first difficult part of the book.
Most of us were taught to17the things that we do not understand. We were told to find the 18 of unfamiliar words, and to try to find an explanation in another19for anything that we did not understand in the book that we were reading. But when these things are done before the proper time, they only 20 our reading, instead of helping it.

The Orkney Islands are about 14 kilometres from the north coast of Scotland. They are mostly low-lying, except for Hoy which has the highest sea cliff(峭壁) in Britain. The1and the climate are good in Orkney,2there are a lot of farms.
To get to Orkney you have to fly or go by3. Ships bringing passengers come from Aberdeen every week. They also bring food, machines and so on. Most Orkney farmers4cows or sheep. Because of this, grass is the most5crop on the islands. One of the islands has sheep which6sea plants7grass---they are8, but very strong and healthy.
Many people in the Orkney Islands are fishermen. Some go a long way out to9to catch large fish,10others catch11like crabs(螃蟹) and lobsters(龙虾)，near the shore. The islanders12the crab meat and then pack it and send it to the13. They do not cook the lobsters. They send them14to restaurants in many of the large15of Europe. Most of the islands have their own16but of course some of them are very small---with only one group of children from five to ten years old. In fact there are17young people at all on the quietest islands. Usually they go the main town of Kirkwall,18modern lives.
Some people come from other parts of Britain to find a19life on the islands. Everyone is very friendly and they all know each other. Things are changing slowly, but the old way of life20continues.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to1a passager at 2:30 a.m. When I arrived to2the passager, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

A friend in need
Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs who met every day to play together. Like pairs of dogs you1find in any neighborhood, these two2each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their own houses.
One evening, Brownie’s family3that Brownie hadn’t returned home. Then Ted followed the anxious Spotty. The little dog led the man to a10spot a half mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie11but one of his hind legs stuck in a steel leg-hold trap. Horrified, Ted now wished he’d taken Spotty’s earlier requirement12Then Ted noticed something quite remarkable. Spotty had done more than simply13Brownie’s owner to his trapped friend. In a circle around the14dog, Ted found some dog food, which was later15as the remains of every meal Spotty had been fed that16!Spotty had been visiting Brownie17in a single-minded quest to keep his friend alive by offering his own comfort. Spotty had obviously18with Brownie to protect him from being hurt, snuggling(依偎)with him at night to keep him warm and touching him gently with its nose to keep his19up. Brownie’s leg was treated by a veterinarian and he recovered. For many years afterward, the two20watched the faithful friends frolicking(嬉戏)and chasing each other down that well worn path between their houses.
