When people hear that I'm the youngest person to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, they all have the same question:How did a 22-year old woman row a 19-foot boat for 70 days through high winds and crashing waves? Well, the biggest 1 for me wasn't physical.By the time I decided to do the 2 row, I had already biked 3, 300 miles cross-country, run across the Mojave Desert, and 3 the 325-mile length of the Allegheny River. However, the tough part would be 4 :How would I handle the 5 , the boredom of the vast sea?
I 6 on January 3, 2010.I set my sights on(下决心)getting past the quarter-way 7 , which would take about 20 days.
Day 20, January 22, was gray and cloudy.I could have done something to 8 , such as 9 myself to a chocolate bar. 10 I didn't.
I was suffering from terrible loneliness.I hadn't seen 11 over two weeks.Every day was beginning to feel the same.Eating, rowing, sleeping, watching the sky, watching the ocean.
Then, around sunset, I saw something move on the horizon. They were dolphins! They 12 my boat.Suddenly I felt so grateful. They had come to help me celebrate, just 13 I needed them.I rowed at full 14 for the next 20 minutes with the dolphins around.By the time we went our 15 ways, I was no longer lonely.Better yet, I knew I would be okay.
I did make 16 , all 2, 817 miles.I hit the coast of Guyana, South America, on March 14, after 70 days and five hours at sea.My ocean row 17 $70, 000 for the Blue Planet Run Foundation, which funds drinking water programs around the world.I know some athletes spend the entire journey imagining the end, and that helps them get 18 .But for me, the secret is to focus on the 19 , where you experience the personal growth-those moments of awareness of being connected to the sun, the weather, and the waves. And, on the best day of my life, those dolphins, which freed myself 20 terrible loneliness.

It's easy to see how to help some people, but what about those whose needs are not so obvious? This story may have happened a while back-but it was a 1 which has stayed with me and helped me ever since.
It was Thanksgiving Day and I was 2 with my parents at a shelter centre for the needy.Standing behind the counter, we 3 hot food to whoever came in.Most of the people who came here looked like they had been 4 hard times.Their clothes were so worn-out, and they were so dirty. In short, they looked needy!
Then, a man came in , who looked 5 but needy. He was well dressed, for he wore an expensive suit.I wondered what he was doing there and my jaw dropped in 6 when he joined the line for food. The closer he came to my service station, the more I 7 in a low voice.I wanted to know what this man was doing. 8 he wasn't going to take food 9 for those who were really in need!
Then my mother 10 took me to one side. She said, “You have 11 that the needs of the people who come here must be purely physical:hunger, lack of 12 , clothing and so on.And this gentleman doesn't seem to have any of those 13 .But what if his needs are 14 ? What if he needs comfort, friends, or just to be among other human beings?” Her words 15 me like a ton of bricks! I felt like I should 16 to the man-but I didn't.
About a week later the shelter centre received a large 17 from an anonymous(匿名)source.I can't help but 18 if it came from that man.
Now, whenever I meet someone I remember my mother's lesson and try to send kindness and blessings 19 what they look like.Needs aren't always 20 .But kindness always makes a difference.
