I spent the opening day of school this year at DeMatha Catholic High School in much the same way I spent the first day of classes 1 30 years ago; I sat in Dr Charles E.Offutt’s British literature class, listening to him 2 what the seniors would learn and get them excited about the journey they would 3 .I’m the principal of the school now, but for a few minutes I was back in 1975, 4 what the future held.
I have been learning from Dr Offutt for 30 of the 51 years he has been teaching at DeMatha. He not only taught me to think, he 5 me, as much by example as by 6 , that it was my moral duty to do so and to 7 others.
Neither of us could know how our 8 would develop over the years. When I first came back to DeMatha to teach English, I worked for Dr Offutt, the then department chair. After several years, I was 9 department chair, and our relationship changed 10 .I thought that it might be 11 chairing the department, since all of my former English teachers were still there, but Dr Offutt 12 me throughout. He knew when to give me 13 about curriculum, tests and personnel, and when to let me design my own course.
In 1997, I needed his advice about leaving DeMatha to become principal at another school. If he had asked me to stay at DeMatha, I might have. 14 , he encouraged me to seize the new 15 .
Five years ago, I became the 16 of DeMatha.Once again, Dr Offutt was there for me, letting me know that I could 17 on him as I tried to fill big shoes.I’ve learned from him that great teachers have a(n) 18 wealth of lessons to teach. 19 his students don’t know it yet, I know how 20 they are; I’m still one of them.

I truly hope that at the end of this short essay(短文)you will know how to learn English.

What are the basic elements(要素)of good manners? Certainly a strong sense of justice is one; courtesy(谦恭)is often 1 more than a highly developed sense of fair play.A friend of mine once told me about a time he was 3 along a narrow, unpaved(未铺柏油的)mountain road. 3 was another car that produced clouds of 4 , and it was a long way to the nearest 5 highway.Suddenly, at a 6 place, the car ahead pulled off the road. 7 that its owner might have engine trouble, my friend stopped and asked if anything was wrong.“ 8 ,”said the other driver, “but you’ve endured(忍受)my dust this far; I’ll 9 with yours the rest of the way.”
Another element of courtesy is empathy(善解人意), a 10 that enables a person to see into the mind or heart of someone else, to understand the pain or 11 there and to do something to minimize it.A man 12 alone in a restaurant was trying to open the cap of a beer bottle, 13 he couldn’t do it because of badly injured 14 .He asked a young busboy to help him.The boy took the bottle, turned his back 15 and loosened the cap without difficulty. Then he 16 it again.Turning back to the man, he 17 to make great efforts to open the bottle without success. 18 he took it into the kitchen and returned shortly, saying that he had managed to loosen it-but only with a pair of pliers(钳子).
Yet another element of politeness is the ability to treat all people 19 , in spite of all status or importance. 20 when you have doubts about some people, act as if they are worthy of your best manners. You may also be astonished to find out what they really are.
Courtesy is the key to a happier world.

As a music teacher, I have always known that music touches the soul.It can 1 all kinds of barriers to reach students in a very special way.It can be the 2 for each child to find their light.I would like to 3 a story about it.
For a few years I was 4 with the opportunity to teach disabled students. One of my most 5 students was a five-year-old girl called Vanessa, who had difficulty walking, and could not speak. We 6 sat on the floor for our music lessons and Vanessa liked to 7 on my lap(膝上).One of her favorite songs was "John the Rabbit." It was a call and response song where I sang the call and the students 8 twice while singing the repeating phrase, "Oh, yes! " Vanessa liked to 9 her hands together with mine and clap with me.We probably performed that song during every class, Vanessa and I clapping together. But she 10 said or sang a word.
One day, when the song was finished, Vanessa turned around, 11 me in the eye, clapped her tiny hands twice and said the words " Oh, yes 1" I opened my mouth in 12 and for that moment I was the one who could not speak. When my heart 13 started beating again, I looked over at the assistant teacher to find her also 14 Through music, we had made an awesome connection.
Several years later, I met Vanessa on the street in town. She waved with a big 15 on her face and then clapped her hands twice, imitating the song we had 16 so many times in our music class. The little girl, 17 her connection with music, left an impression on me that will last forever.Every child has the 18 to learn and grow.It is up to us to 19 the way to reach each and every one of our students. We all must find each child's 20 .

I've been in the taxicab business for thirty-five years, and I know there is a lot about it that is not so good.Taxicab drivers have to be 1 fellows to be able to work in New York. You've got to fight the New York 2 eight hours a day these days, so people get the wrong 3 that they are bad.
Actually, taxi drivers are just like other people. Most of them will 4 as honest fellows. You read in the 5 almost every week where a taxi driver turns in money or jewels or bonds that people 6 in their cabs.If they weren't honest, you wouldn't be reading those stories in the papers.
One time in Brooklyn, I found a diamond ring in my cab.I 7 helping a lady with a lot of packages that day, so I went back to where I had 8 her.It took me almost two days to trace her down in order to return her ring to her.I didn't 9 as much as “thank you”.Still I felt good 10 I had done what was right.I think I felt better than she did.
I was born and 11 in Ireland and lived there until I was nineteen years old. Then I came to this 12 in 1913 where I held several jobs to earn a few dollars before enlisting(参军)in World War I.After being discharged(退役), I had a family and bought my own cab.Life hasn't been too 13 at times, but my wife takes care of our money and we have a good bit 14 for a rainy day.
When I 15 driving a cab, Park Avenue was mostly a bunch of coal yards.Hoofer's Brewery was right next to where the Waldorf-Astoria is now.I did pretty well, 16 in those days.
In all my years of driving a taxicab, I have 17 had any trouble with the public, not even with drunks.
I believe 18 is one of the greatest gifts there is.I know they call it a lot of fancy names these days, like integrity(正直), etc.But it doesn't make any 19 what they call it; it's still what makes a man a good 20 .This is my code, and I try to live by.
