Across the world, students are sweating as they prepare for all kinds of exams. Many teenagers complain that while they do well in their homework, they don't get 1 marks in exams. They are wondering why.
In a new study U.S.psychologists think they have found the answer.Researchers report that heavy exam 2 is actually more likely to affect the performance of very good students than average ones.
Worried about 3 others, these students can lose their most valuable 4 weapons:short-term or working memory. This is their ability to 5 numbers and ideas, while focusing on problem at hand.According to the study, when 6 pressure is put on people with good skills, their performance drops.
People with strong working memory skills 7 to do well in intellectual ability test.Their analytical skills and creative 8 depend on their short-term-focused processor.
In the study, researchers 9 the working memory of 93 students. They were divided into two groups, with a high and a low 10 memory.
The students then took two maths tests each under 11 conditions. One was called a practice test.In the other, the students were told they were part of a team that was depending on them to 12 their score in order to win a reward.
The results were 13 :the group with high working memory scored about 10 percent higher than the others on the low-pressure practice test. But the two groups' 14 were about equal when the pressure was on to perform.
The study shows how memory performance is 15 by fear of failure, according to the scientists.

Today's English learner has a wide choice of dictionaries. There are 1 with AmericanEnglish, with British English, with idioms or slang, and 2 with pictures. One of the most 3 dictionaries I have seen among many students is the 4 electronic dictionary. All you have to do is to 5 a word in your language and you can see it and 6 it in English. That's great, right?Well, I think it's great, too…but only sometimes.
Bilingual electronic dictiooaries are fast and 7 .They can be great 8 you are traveling and need information quickly. 9 I am against electronic dictionaries and even bilingual 10 dictionaries in many cases.Let me explain.
When you reach an intermediate(中等的)level of English, you know 11 of the language to ask the meaning of certain things while using English.Translating between languages in your head 12 time. You should be translating as little as possible and 13 in English as much as possible.I strongly recommend that intermediate and advanced students should 14 an English-English dictionary that is made 15 for your understanding. For example, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press has good dictionaries for students and 16 publishing houses do, too.
I also feel that paper dictionaries are better for studying than electronic dictionaries.True, they take longer to use. But, for some reason, the information you 17 seems to stay in your head longer. It may be 18 you are forced to spell the word in your head and therefore“see it”more clearly in your 19 .
So what do you do if you have checked an English-English dictionary and still don't understand something?Go to your bilingual dictionary. It is useful sometimes.Just remember to try to 20 in English a s much as possible.

An earthquake hit Kashmir on Oct.8, 2005.It took some 75000 lives, 1 130000 and left nearly 3.5 million without food, jobs or homes. 2 overnight, scores of tent villages bloomed 3 the region, tended by international aid organizations, military 4 and aid groups working day and night to shelter the survivors before winter set in.
Mercifully, the season was mild. But with the 5 of spring, the refugees will be moved again.Camps that 6 health care, food and shelter for 150000 survivors have begun to close as they were 7 intended to be permanent.
For most of the refugees, the thought of going back brings 8 emotions. The past six months have been difficult.Families of as many as 10 people have had to shelter 9 a single tent and share cook stoves and bathing 10 with neighbours.“They are looking forward to the clean water of their rivers,”officials say.“They are dreaming of free fresh fruit. They want to get back to their herds and start 11 again.”But most will be returning to 12 but heaps of ruins. In many villages, electrical 13 have not been repaired, nor have roads.Aid workers 14 that it will take years to rebuild what the earthquake took away. And for the thousands of survivors, the 15 will never be complete.
