You say you’re old enough to stay out late on weekends while they say you have to be home early. You say you want to see that new film while they say you can’t see it.You say you’ve met some nice kids and you’d like to go out with them, but they say they’d like to see your friends first.

So, if you want to get more freedom, please try to understand your parents and do not just lie.

4 If you want them to allow you to stay out late, don’t just say, “All the other kids can stay out late.” Tell them as much as you can about what you want to do and where you’ll be and why it’s important for you to stay out later…, they might just say yes.

B.No one likes being troubled.

________1.This book is a guide to the world's unspoilt sights and experiences. It presents one thousand fresh and fascinating alternatives to hundreds of well-known tourist destinations and sights, including alternatives to the Carnival in Rio and the beaches of Thailand, the most-visited national parks, over-rated restaurants and holiday sites.

________2.In this collection, Bill Bryson is writing from home.We find he assesses life both in New England and in the contemporary United States. With the telescopic perspective(远望视角)of one who has stepped out of the American mainstream and come back after 20 years, Bryson holds the mirror up to U.S.culture and feels strange to his motherland.

________3.Returning to the U.S.after 20 years in England, Bill Bryson decided to reconnect with his mother country by hiking the length of the 2100-mile Appalachian Trail.Awed by merely the camping section of his local sporting goods store, he still goes into the wilderness and learns hard lessons about self-reliance.

________4.A travelogue by Bill Bryson is as close to a sure thing as funny books get. This book is no exception.Following an urge to rediscover his youth, the author leaves his native Des Moines, Iowa, in a journey that takes him to cross 38 states in the country, which is like a small town in his opinion.

________5.Born in Iowa, Bryson backpacked through Europe as a young man. While living in England some 20 years later, he revisited many of the same places from arctic Norway's northern lights to romantic Capri in Italy. Here he jumps back and forth between old memories and new experiences.

There is an English saying:“ 1 ” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously(认真对待).Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. 2

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body.People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. 3 If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial(有益的).

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body.In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. 4

Mirriam Websters online dictionary defines happy as:enjoying good health and satisfaction.Sounds nice, doesn’t it? I know a secret that can lead to happiness. Now you may ask, what secret is that? It’s a well-known secret, in fact.Perform a random(随意的)act of kindness per day.

Positive psychology is the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to grow.According to University of Pennsylvania’s website, positive psychology has three central concerns:positive emotions, positive individual character, and positive systems.Understanding positive emotion includes the study of satisfaction with the past, happiness at present, and hope for the future.Understanding positive individual character consists of the study of the strengths and virtues, such as love, courage, creativity, curiosity, self-knowledge, self-control, and wisdom.Understanding positive systems needs the study of meaning and purpose as well as the strengths that help the growth of better communities, such as responsibility, leadership, teamwork, purpose, and tolerance(忍耐力).

Positive psychology focuses on strengths as well as weaknesses, on building the best things in life as well as repairing the worst. It asserts(断言)that human goodness and excellence is just as real as sadness and illness, and that life consists more than seeking the answers to problems. All these things can be summed up in one concept:giving can equal a meaningful life, i.e.happiness.

But you are probably wondering how.Well, let’s examine the research, shall we? A 1996 study showed that wealth is only weakly related to happiness both within and across nations, particularly when income is above the poverty level. So money does not mean happiness. In 2000, a different study showed that activities that make people happy in some way-such as shopping, good food and making money-do not lead to satisfaction in the long term, indicating that these have quick diminishing returns(收益递减).

However, on the other hand, we also know that people who witness others perform good deeds experience an emotion which drives them to perform their own good deeds.Making a contribution to the lives of other people may help to extend our own lives.

This is why I make a point of trying to do something nice every day.Sometimes I tip much larger than I need to.Sometimes I just smile at someone who looks like they really need it.A random act of kindness is an act that receives just as much as it gives. You’ll be happier. They’ll be happier. And you’ll live longer. So, please, perform a random act of kindness each day.

The job of raising children is a tough one.Children don't come with an instruction handbook. And each child is different. So parents sometimes pull their hair out in frustration(挫折), not knowing what to do.But in raising children-as in all of life-what we do is influenced by our culture.Naturally then, American parents teach their children basic American values.

To Americans, the goal of parents is to help children stand on their own two feet. From infancy(幼年), each child may get his or her own room.As children grow, they gain more freedom to make their own choices.Teenagers choose their own forms of entertainment, as well as the friends to share them with. When they reach young adulthood, they choose their own careers and marriage partners.Of course, many young adults still seek their parents' advice and approval for the choices they make. But once they "leave the nest" at around 18 to 21 years old, they want to be on their own, not "tied to their mother's apron strings."

The relationship between parents and children in America is very informal.American parents try to treat their children as individuals-not as extensions(延伸)of themselves.

They allow them to realize their own dreams.Americans praise and encourage their children to give them the confidence to succeed. When children become adults, their relationship with their parents becomes more like a friendship among equals. But contrary to popular belief, most adult Americans don't make their parents pay for room and board when they come to visit.Even as adults, they respect and honor their parents.

Most young couples with children struggle with the issue of childcare.Mothers have traditionally stayed home with their children. In recent years, though, a growing trend is to put preschoolers in a day care center so Mom can work. Many Americans have strong feelings about which type of arrangement is best. Some argue that attending a day care center can be a positive experience for children.Others insist that mothers are the best caregivers for children.A number of women are now leaving the workforce to become full-time homemakers.

Disciplining children is another area that American parents have different opinions about. Many parents feel that an old-fashioned spanking(一顿打)helps youngsters learn what "No!" means.Others prefer alternate forms of discipline. For example, "time outs" have become popular in recent years.Children in "time out" have to sit in a corner or by a wall. They can get up only when they are ready to act nicely.Older children and teenagers who break the rules may be grounded, or not allowed to go out with friends. Some of their privileges(特权)at home like TV or telephone use may also be taken away for a while.Although discipline isn't fun for parents or children, it's a necessary part of training.

Being a parent is a tall order. It takes patience, love, wisdom, courage and a good sense of humor to raise children. Some people are just deciding not to have children at all, since they're not sure it's worth it.But raising children means training the next generation and preserving our culture. What could be worth more than that?
