The writings of Shakespeare are today little read by young people in Britain. His young readership is limited to those who choose to study literature at university.

Shakespeare' s work, together with most other classics, is seen as remote, and written in a 400-year-old version of English that is about as inviting as toothache.

Still, in British schools, it is compulsory to study the poet, and when something is made compulsory, usually the result is boredom, resentment(憎恨)or both.

This was my experience of the classics at school. But when I reached my late teenage years, I had a change of heart.Like every other young person since the dawn of time, the world confused me.I wanted answers, so I turned to books to find them.

I went on to take a PhD in literature and have taught it in Britain and China.I have never regretted it.There is something in literature that people want, even if they don't read books. You see this in the popularity of TV and movie adaptations of great works, the recent film version of Jane Austen' s Pride and Prejudice being a case in point. These popular adaptations may help increase people's interest in the classics.

Reading a simplified Romeo and Juliet may perhaps lead to a reading of Shakespeare's actual plays. If that is the case, then I welcome the trend. But do not make the mistake of thinking that it is the same thing.Shakespeare is a poet. His greatness is in his language.Reading someone else's rewriting of his work is like peeling a banana, throwing away the fruit, and eating the skin.Take on the original. It really is worth the effort.

[ ]

A.

learn more about tradition

B.

get a PhD in literature

C.

seek their answers about the world

D.

(4)

What does the writer intend to tell us in the last paragraph?

[ ]

A.

The fruit of a banana si more useful than its skin.

B.

The rewriting trend does more harm than good.

C.

Readers should try to read the original versions.

D.

Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a wonderful old man who loved everything:animals, spiders, insects…

One day while walking through the woods, the nice old man found a cocoon(茧)of a butterfly. He took it home.A few days later, a small opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon.

  The butterfly then appeared easily.

But it had a swollen body and small, fragile wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would be smaller in time.Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(慢慢爬行)around with a swollen body and fragile wings.

It never was able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and hurry did not understand was that the limited cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Nature's way of forcing fluid(液体)from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life.If we were allowed to go through our life without any obstacles and difficulties, it would disable us.We would not be as strong as what we could have been. And we could never fly.

Scientists made a great break through this year in England when the first "test tube" baby was born. The birth was the result of many years of research by doctors. The doctors did the research in groups to help the women who cannot conceive a baby in the normal way.

What happened when the baby was born "from a test tube"? Well, the baby did not literally grow in a test tube. The first stage of the process was that the egg from the woman and the sperm from the man were put together in the test tube. After all, the embryo was put into the womb of a woman. This process was difficult. But it was successful, so the baby was eventually born, like any other, from a woman, only the woman wasn't the baby's real mother, but a sort of "carrier" of a baby produced by another couple.

Obviously, this method is to help the couples who can't have children because of physical problems in the woman. But very difficult moral problems arise in the kind of situation.Take it for instance, a case that happened this year.A couple who wanted a baby advertised for a woman to have a child by the father of the couple. They offered the woman a lot of money. The woman was made pregnant by artificial insemination; in this case, the woman "employed" to bear the child was its real mother. When the baby was born, the woman refused to give it back to the couple. But, in the eyes of the law, the woman had a right to keep the children because she was its biologic al mother.

You could argue that we should change the law to deal with this kind of situation. In earlier times, there were always healthy babies needing adoption, because family planning methods were not so effective as they are now. These days, however, most of the children who can be adopted are over six years old, often handicapped in some way.So a couple who want a young healthy baby cannot always adopt one, this is why the "test tube" baby is in demand. But is it normally right to use this method? Should we temper with nature in this way? Even if we change the law, would this be the right step to take?

(1)

The birth of the first "test-tube" baby is a great advance ________.

[ ]

A.

on medical science

B.

in birth control

on the research for babies

D.

D.

The father who advertises for a biological mother.

D.
