　　It seems that some people go out of their way to get into trouble．That’s more or less what happened the night that Nashville Police Officer Floyd Hyde was on duty．

　　“I was on the way to a personal-injury accident in West Nashville．As I got onto Highway 40, blue lights and sirens(警笛)going, I fell in behind a gold Pontiac Firebird that suddenly seemed to take off quickly down the highway．The driver somehow panicked at the sight of me．He was going more than a hundred miles an hour and began passing cars on the shoulder．”

　　But Hyde couldn’t go after him．Taking care of injured people is always more important than worrying about speeders, so the officer had to stay on his way to the accident．But he did try to keep the Firebird in sight as he drove, hoping another nearby unit would be able to step in and stop the speeding car．As it turned out, keeping the Firebird in sight was not that difficult．Every turn the Pontiac made was the very turn the officer needed to get to the accident scene．

　　Hyde followed the Pontiac all the way to his destination．At that point he found another unit had already arrived at the accident scene．His help wasn’t needed．Now he was free to try to stop the driver of the Firebird, who by this time had developed something new to panic about．

　　“Just about that time,” Hyde says, “I saw fire coming out from under that car, with blue smoke and oil going everywhere．He’d blown his engine．Now he had to stop．”

　　“After I arrested him, I asked him why he was running．He told me he didn’t have a driver’s license．”

　　That accident cost the driver of the Firebird plenty－a thousand dollars for the new engine－not to mention the charges for driving without a license, attempting to run away, and dangerous driving．

A Full-Time School Called Life

　　You are enrolled in a full-time school called “life”．Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons．You may like the lessons or hate them, but you have designed them as part of your curriculum．

　　Why are you here? What is your purpose? Humans have sought to discover the meaning of life for a very long time．What we and our ancestors overlooked, however, is there is no one answer．The meaning of life is different for every individual．

　　Each person has his or her own purpose and distinct path, unique and separate from anyone else’s．As you travel your life path, you will be presented with numerous lessons that you will need to learn in order to fulfill that purpose．The lessons you are presented with are specific to you; learning these lessons is a key to discovering and fulfilling the meaning and connection of your own life．

　　As you travel through your lifetime, you may encounter challenging lessons that others don’t have to face, while others spend years struggling with challenges that you don’t need to deal with．You may never know why you are blessed with a wonderful marriage, while your friends suffer through bitter arguments and painful divorces, just as you cannot be sure why you struggle financially while your peers enjoy abundance．The only thing you can count on for certain is that you specifically need to learn; whether we choose to learn them or not is entirely up to you．

　　The challenge here, therefore, is to align(与…保持一致)yourself with your own unique path by learning individual lessons．This is one of the most difficult challenges you will be faced with in your lifetime, as sometimes your path will be completely different from others．But, remember, don’t compare your path to the people around you and focus on the difference between their lessons and yours．You need to remember that you will only be faced with lessons that you are capable of learning and are specific to your own growth．

　　Our sense of fairness is the expectation of equity－the assumption that all things are equal and that justice will always prevail．Life is not, in fact, fair, and you may indeed have a more difficult lift path than others around you, deserved or not．Everyone’s circumstances are unique, and everyone needs to handle his or her own circumstances differently．If you want to move toward calm, you will be required to move out the comparing phrase of “it’s not fair”．Focusing on the unfairness of circumstances keeps you comparing yourself with others rather than appreciating your own special uniqueness．You miss out on learning your individual lessons by distracting yourself with feeling of bitterness and anger．

　　Researchers in Britain are driving the environmental movement to a new level．A team from the University of Warwick has built what it calls the world’s first completely environmentally friendly Formula Three racing car．

　　The car is made mainly of renewable materials, like plants and vegetables．The structure around the car is made from natural plant fibers and potatoes．The steering wheel(方向盘)is made from root vegetables like carrots．The engine uses bio-fuel made from vegetable oil and waste chocolate．

　　The new racing car is extremely fast．The car has a top speed of two hundred fifteen kilometers an hour．And it can go from zero to ninety-five kilometers an hour in just two and a half seconds．The racing car meets all of the Formula Three racing requirements except for its biodiesel(生物柴油)engine．

　　Automobile racing is one of the most widely watched sports in the world．But it is also considered one of the least friendly sports to the environment．Racing cars burn a lot of fuel, and create a lot of air pollution．In recent years, the racing industry has taken steps to protect the environment．More racing companies are now producing cars that use less energy．These cars produce less pollution than cars that depend on traditional fuel, like gasoline．

　　Last month, the new racing car was set to run in its first competitive race at the Formula Three Championship Final at Brands Hatch．It would have been the first biodiesel-powered car to race at Formula Three．Current Formula Three rules let only gasoline-powered car to compete．Officials needed permission from all of the Formula Three racers for the biodiesel-powered car to compete．They were unable to contact one of the drivers, so the new racing car didn’t appear in the event．In test runs, the new racing car was the fifth fastest among the Formula Three race cars．Supporters are hoping to have the fuel problem solved in time to compete in the next season．

　　In a moment of personal crisis, how much help can you expect from a New York taxi driver? I began studying this question and found the answers interesting．

　　One morning I got into three different taxis and announced, “Well, it’s my first day back in New York in seven years．I’ve been in prison．” Not a single driver replied, so I tried again．“Yeah, I shot a man in Reno．” I explained, hoping the driver would ask me why, but nobody asked．The only response came from a Ghanaian driver, “Reno? That is in Nevada?”

　　Taxi drivers were uniformly sympathetic when I said I’d just been fired．“This is America,” a Haitian driver said．“One door is closed．Another is open．” He argued against my plan to burn down my boss’s house．A Pakistani driver even turned down a chance to profit from my loss of hope; he refused to take me to the middle of George Washington Bridge－a ＄20 trip．“Why you want to go there? Go home and relax．Don’t worry．Take a new job．”

　　One very hot weekday in July, while wearing a red ski mask and holding a stuffed pillowcase with the word “BANK” on it, I tried calling a taxi five times outside different banks．The driver picked me up every time．My ride with a Haitian driver was typical of the superb assistance I received．

　　“Let’s go across the park．” I said．“I just robbed the bank there．I got ＄25,000．”

　　“＄25,000?” He asked．

　　“Yeah, you think it was wrong to take it?”

　　“No, man．I work 8 hours and I don’t make almost ＄70．If I can do that, I do it too．”

　　As we approached 86th and Lexington, I pointed to the Chemical Bank．

　　“Hey, there’s another bank,” I said, “Could you wait here a minute while I go inside?”

　　“No, I can’t wait．Pay me now．” His reluctance may have something to do with money－taxi drivers think the rate for waiting time is too low－but I think he wanted me to learn that even a bank robber can’t expect unconditional support．

　　Angry survivors(幸存者)demanded answers on Sunday after a terrible accident at “Love Parade 2010”, a music festival in Germany, killed 19 people and left hundreds hurt．

　　The German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her shock over Saturday’s tragedy in the western city of Duisburg．, “This was a very sad day,” Merkel said．

　　Witnesses(目击者)said that people pushed into the narrow tunnel, the only entrance to the Love Parade festival, from both sides until it was dangerously overcrowded．The panic began as festival-goers began to lose consciousness(意识)as they were crushed against the walls and each other．The dead included eight foreigners, from Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, China, Bosnia and Spain．More than 340 people were injured．

　　After the panic, a lot of emergency vehicles(救援交通工具), including helicopters, could be seen carrying away the injured people．The festival itself, however, went on．Police were afraid that ending the music altogether could cause further unrest among the crowd．

　　“The event was a real mess,” Patrick Guenter, a 22-year-old baker, said．“Although the festival was full, they kept letting people in,” he added．“It seems the organizers didn’t plan the route．And no one knew what was going on．” said Taggart Bowen-Gaddy, 20, an American from Philadelphia．

　　Officials said 4,000 police officers and 1,000 security guards provided security for the event, which attracted up to 1.4 million people．

　　“I warned one year ago that Duisburg was not a suitable place for the Love Parade．The city is too small and narrow for such events．It is a pity that…” German police union chief Rainer Wendt said．

　　The chief organizer, Rainer Schaller, said the popular event would never be held again, “out of respect for the victims and their families”．

　　I have recently completed my college degree．The last project was called “Smile”．The class was asked to go out to smile at three people and document their reactions(反应)．I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway．So, I thought this would be a piece of cake．

　　My husband, the youngest son and I went out to McDonald．We were standing in line when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away．As I turned around I smelled a horrible body odour(气味)and saw two poor homeless men standing behind me．As I looked at the short blue-eyed gentleman closest to me, he was “smiling”．The second man fumbled(摸索)with his hands as he stood behind his friend．

　　The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted．He said, “Coffee is all, Miss,” because that was all they could afford．

　　Then I really felt it－I embraced(拥抱)the little man with the blue eyes．That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action．I smiled and asked two more breakfast meals on and gave them to the men．

　　The blue-eyed gentleman looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Thank you．”

　　I turned in my project．My teacher said, “Can I share this?” I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class．She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings share this need to heal people and to be healed．

　　In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald’s and every soul that heard the story in the classroom．But, I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn．
