As a youngster, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather's farm in western Pennsylvania.Surrounded by miles of winding stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me.I was used to the tidy living rooms that seemed to whisper, “Not to be touched!”
I can still remember one afternoon when I was eight years old.Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses. My parents would never approve. The walls were old; some stones were missing, others loose and falling.Still, my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally, one spring afternoon, I had all my courage to enter the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
“I, uh-I want to climb the stone walls, ”I said.Everyone looked up.“Can I climb the stone walls?” Immediately voices of disagreement went up from the women in the room.“Heavens, no! You'll hurt yourself!” I wasn't too disappointed; the response was just as I'd expected. But before I could leave the room, I was stopped by my grandfather's loud voice.“Now hold on just a minute, ”I heard him say.“Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
“Go, ”he said to me, “And come and see me when you get back.” For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls-and had the time of my life.Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures.I'll never forget what he said.“Fred, ”he said, smiling, “You made this day a special day just by being yourself.Always remember, there's only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”
Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same:my message to children at the end of almost every visit.“There's only one person in this whole world like you, ”the kids can count on hearing me say, “And people can like you exactly as you are.”

Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human condition is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful conditions.Social support makes up of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems.People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties.Studies over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.
Social support cushions stress in a number of ways.First, friends, relatives and co-workers may let us know that they value us.Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties.Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them.Third, we typically find social companionship supportive.Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support-money aid, material resources, and needed services-that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers.More mothers now work outside the home.More fathers must help with child-care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways.On Mother's Day people wear carnations.A red one symbolizes a living mother.A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father's Day.These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts.Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”.Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one's mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that, ” and it is even harder to say, “l was wrong, and you were right about that.” I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago.He told me he had been the manager of a cartons(纸盒).Then he talked of an incident and I began to remember the incident he was describing.
I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that particular day, I must have found my way to the food department where the incident took place.
There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was a big show of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were put three or four feet high.I must have stopped in front of them to admire the show.Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery cart and knocked off the pile of cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the cartons back together, so I went to work.
The manager heard the noise and hurried to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees checking some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the person who was to blame. He scolded me loud and wanted me to pay for any broken.
Many years have passed and I have forgotten the incident, but the manager hasn't yet.

A large daily dose of vitamin D can cut the risk of developing some common cancers by as much as 50 percent.
The study reviewed 63 studies published worldwide between 1966 and 2004 that linked vitamin D levels to cancer risk.Scientists said analysis showed that the “natural” form of the vitamin, known as D3, could dramatically reduce one's chances of developing common cancers, for example, by 50 percent in colon cancer and by 30 percent in breast and ovarian cancer.
Paula Bokser considers the so-called “sunshine vitamin” a key weapon that helped her fight breast cancer. She grappled with the illness twice in six years and during her treatment her doctor recommended vitamin D.
“There are so many things when you are dealing with cancer that you feel powerless,” Bokser said.“Maybe taking the vitamins gives me a bit more power…you know it's another fighting agent.”
The study concluded that taking 1,000 international units(IU)of the vitamin daily could cut an individual's cancer risk by as much as 50 percent. The study found that survival rates for darker-skinned people with breast, colon, prostate and ovarian cancers are worse than that for white people because the high melatonin content in darker skin reduces its ability to produce vitamin D.In the absence of sunshine, a beneficial level of vitamin D can be obtained from food and daily supplements.
While D3 is normally produced in the skin after exposure to sunlight, it can also be obtained from dietary sources, such as oily fish, eggs and meat.
“There is evidence to suggest that the vitamin plays a role in keeping cells healthy. But further research is needed to understand what role vitamin D may play in preventing cancer in humans,” said Sara Hiom, head of health information at Cancer Research UK.

I'm one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city.I have managed to convince myself that if it weren't for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go back to nature in some sleepy village buried in the country. But how realistic is the dream?
Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in huge tower blocks, noisy, dirty and impersonal. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors up.All you can see from your window is sky, or other blocks of flats.Children and mothers, caged up at home all day, feel isolated(隔绝的)from the rest of the world.Whereas in the past the residents of one street all knew each other, nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don't even say hello to each other. But one of its main advantages is that you are the centre of things, and that life doesn't come to an end at half past nine at night.
Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally ties the residents of small villages together.People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need help. But it is also true that you are cut off from the exciting and important events that take place in cities.Shopping becomes a major problem and for anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on an expedition to the nearest large town. The city resident who leaves for the country is often oppressed(压抑)by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet.
What, then, is the answer? Some people have found a compromise(折衷)between the two:they have expressed their preference for the “quietlife” by moving to villages within commuting(可往返的)distance of the large cities. They generally have about as much sensitivity as the plastic flowers they leave behind-they are polluted with strange ideas about change and improvement which they force on to the unwilling original residents of the villages.
What of my dreams of leaning on a cottage gate and saying “morning” to the locals as they pass by? I'm wild about the idea, but you see there's my cat, Toby.I'm not at all sure that he would take to all that fresh air and exercise in the long grass.I mean, can you see him mixing with all those hearty males down the farm? No, he would rather have the electric imitation of coal fire any evening.

A normal conversation between strangers involves more than talk.It also involves the dynamics of space interaction. If one person gets too close, the other person will back up.If the first person invades the other's space again, the other person will back up again. The person who finds himself or herself backing up is trying to increase the distance of the comfort zone. The person closing in is trying to decrease that distance. Most likely neither person is fully aware of what is going on.
In the 1960s, American anthropologist(人类学家)Edward T.Hall was a pioneer in the study of human behavioral use of space. His field of study became known as proxemics.Hall said that personal space for people in the United States can be defined as having four distinct zones:the intimate zone within 18 inches of your body, for whispering and embracing; the personal zone of 18 inches to four feet, for talking with close friends; the social zone of four to 10 feet, for conversing with acquaintances; and the public zone of 10 to 25 feet, for interacting with strangers or talking to a group.
Historians say that our standards of personal space began with the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century. In cities such as London and New York, people of different social and economic classes were suddenly crammed together, so they unconsciously developed a commonly understood code of courtesy(谦恭有礼)to restrict the space around them.
People exhibit nonverbal messages of discomfort when their zones are violated.Invaded people might tap their toes, pull at their hair, become completely rigid, or even become angry. As Hall noted in his landmark work, a comfortable conversation needs to include the parameters of human personal space.

Jan 6, 2006-Randal McCloy JR., the sole survivor of the Sago Mine tragedy, has emerged from a coma(昏迷)but remains unconscious at Pittsburgh's Allegheny Hospital. He's in a critical but stable condition.
McCloy has responded to his wife's voice, even squeezing her hand. But doctors fear he may have suffered brain damage from carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)poisoning even though his initial tests did not reveal the presence of the lethal gas.
Since yesterday, he has been receiving hyperbaric oxygen treatments, which flood the body with 20 times the normal amount of oxygen. The hope is that it will flush the carbon monoxide from his brain and help his other damaged organs.
But his doctors admit it's a long shot.A recent study found little evidence that the treatments helped the brain to heal. And doctors warn that any improvement will take days or weeks.
His wife, Anna McCloy, and his mother, Tambra Flint, both said they saw him respond to their presence. They said M c Cloy would give them a knowing wink when he understood what they said and he also tried to nod his head to show his agreement.
“I know he knows when I'm there because when I'm there he gets excited and he lifts his eyelids to try to look at me,” Anna said.
“When we discuss things with him like going fishing and hunting, he gets excited too,” Flint said.
Anna said she also saw a response when she brought their children into the room.
There have been many theories as to how McCloy survived when the other 12 men did not. Some people say it's because McCloy, 26, was the youngest.Others-including his mother-speculate that other miners gave him their oxygen masks.
