¡¡¡¡I grew up in a community called Estepona. I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him into a 1 village called Mijas, on condition that I took the car in to be 2 at a nearby garage. I readily accepted. I drove Dad into Mijas, and 3 to pick him up at 4 p.m., then dropped off the car at the 4 . With several hours to spare, I went to a theater. 5 , when the last movie finished, it was six. I was two hours late!
¡¡¡¡I knew Dad would be angry if he 6 I'd been watching movies. So I decided not to tell him the truth. When I 7 there I apologized for being late, and told him I'd 8 as quickly as I could, but that the car had needed some major repairs. I'll never forget the 9 he gave me. ¡°I'm disappointed you 10 you have to lie to me, Jason.¡± Dad looked at me again. ¡°When you didn't 11 , I called the garage to ask if there were any 12 , and they told me you hadn't yet picked up the ear.¡± I felt 13 as I weakly told him the real reason. A 14 passed through Dad as he listened attentively. ¡°I'm angry with. 15 . I realize I've failed as a father. I'm going to walk home now and think seriously about 16 I've gone wrong all these years.¡± ¡°But Dad, it's 18 miles!¡± My protests and apologizes were 17 . Dad walked home that day. I drove behind him, 18 him all the way, but he walked silently.
¡¡¡¡Seeing Dad in so much 19 and emotional pain was my most painful experience. However, it was 20 the most successful lesson. I have never lied since.

¡¡¡¡For many years kids 1 18 haven't been allowed to see extremely violent movies. Parents were worried that kids would get frightened or might 2 to be violent adults. America and many other countries use a system to rate£¨¶¨¼¶£©movies. For some movies, kids must come to the theatre with 3 one of their parents. Kids aren't allowed to see some movies 4 their parents come along.
¡¡¡¡But there are no rating system for 5 . Kids can rent or buy any video they want at a video shop, 6 the video is not about sex. Many parents think kids shouldn't watch violent videos 7 . They are angry about one movie called ¡°Friday the Thirteenth¡±, 8 a person is cut up like a piece of meat and another person 9 his head cut off. In another movie, a man uses a saw£¨¾â£©to kill a child.
¡¡¡¡Many states are 10 laws to control the sale and renting of videos. Colorado won't allow kids to rent or buy videos that show killing. Missouri requires videos to be 11 like movies in theatres. Kids can't rent or buy violent videos 12 their own without 13 from one of their parents.
¡¡¡¡Many people are opposed to these restrictions£¨ÏÞÖÆ£©. They say it would be quite impossible to 14 kids from watching violence in movies and on TV. They say football is 15 as many videos.
¡¡¡¡Violence in movies is nothing 16 American Westerns and war movies have always had fighting and killing. But today's movies and videos seem even 17 . Sometimes it seems as if someone gets 18 every five minutes. Stores shouldn't sell or rent these videos to kids 19 the kids are probably going to believe violence is 20 .

¡¡¡¡The amount of usable water has always been of great interest in the world. 1 springs and streams sometimes means control, particularly in the 2 areas like the desert. The control is possible even without possession of large areas of 3 land. In the early days of the American West, gun fights were not 4 for the water resources£¨×ÊÔ´£©, and laws had to be 5 to protect the water rights of the 6 and the use of the water resources accordingly.
¡¡¡¡ 7 is known to us all, there is not 8 water in all places for everyone to use as much as he likes. Deciding on the 9 of water that will be used in any particular period 10 careful planning, so that people can manage and use water more 11 . Farmers have to change their use of or demand for water 12 the water supply forecast£¨Ô¤±¨£©.
¡¡¡¡The 13 water supply forecast is based more on the water from the 14 than from the below. Interest is 15 in the ways to increase rainfall by man-made methods, and to get water from the winter snow on mountain 16 . With special equipment, some scientists are studying the ways in which the mountain snow can be 17 , and with the help of a repeater station, they send the 18 data£¨Êý¾Ý£©to the base station. The operator at the base station can get the data at any time by 19 a button. In the near future, the forecast and use of water 20 probably depend on the advance knowledge of snow on mountains, not on water underground.

¡¡¡¡My sister and I grew up in a little village in England. Our father was a struggling 1 , but I always knew he was 2 . He never criticized us, but used 3 to bring out our best. He'd say, ¡°If you pour water on flowers, they flourish. If you don't give them water, they die.¡± I 4 as a child I said something 5 about somebody, and my father said,¡° 6 time you say something unpleasant about somebody else, it's a reflection of you.¡± He explained that if I looked for the best 7 people, I would get the best 8 . From then on I've always tried to 9 the principle in my life and later in running my company.
¡¡¡¡Dad's also always been very 10 . At 15, I started a magazine. It was 11 a great deal of my time, and the headmaster of my school gave me a 12 : stay in school or leave to work on my magazine.
¡¡¡¡I decided to leave, and Dad tried to sway me from my decision, 13 any good father would. When he realized I had made up my mind, he said, ¡°Richard, when I was 23, my dad 14 me to go into law. And I've 15 regretted it. I wanted to be a biologist, 16 I didn't pursue my 17 . You know what you want. Go fulfill it. ¡±
¡¡¡¡As 18 turned out, my little publication went on to become Student, a national 19 for young people in the U. K.. My wife and I have two children, and I'd like to think we are bringing them up in the same way Dad 20 me.

¡¡¡¡Do you know the history of the use of cosmetics£¨»¯×±Æ·£©? Probably when 1 first painted their faces, many thousand years ago, it was for the purpose of 2 their enemies in war. But there are records of women in Egypt 3 cosmetics more than four thousand years ago. These women not only painted their eyebrows, they also added a thick dark line under 4 , and had different kinds of 5 for different seasons of the 6 .
¡¡¡¡Women in ancient Rome used cosmetics, too. 7 used Egyptian KOHL for darkening the eyelids, powdered chalk for whitening the skin, and a red colouring matter for the cheeks. 8 rich Roman lady spent many hours over her dressing, arranging the hair and putting on make-up, 9 by a crowd of young slaves of many nationalities. The Roman writer Oind 10 a book on cosmetics, which gives a description of what we now call a face-pack, made 11 flour, eggs and other materials. The use of this, he says, will make the face smoother and brighter than a mirror.
¡¡¡¡In 12 , it was the custom, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, for all ladies of fashion to paint 13 faces and to blacken their eyebrows. In the nineteenth century there was a change of taste, however, and until about the end of the century, ladies who made up were 14 accepted in high society. Girls were advised, just before 15 the ballroom, to bite and lick£¨Ìò£©their lips and slap their cheeks 16 so as to bring some 17 to the face.
¡¡¡¡Today the use of cosmetics is accepted everywhere, and it is 18 to see women and girls making up in public. The 19 industry is one of the largest in some countries, and large sums of money go to the 20 of beauty parlour£¨ÃÀÈÝÔº£©.

¡¡¡¡A newspaper reporter's job can be very interesting. He meets all kinds of people and lives quite 1 life. He is on the rush for newspaper all the time, then after several years he 2 get a desk job, and life becomes a bit more settled.
¡¡¡¡In a day he may have to interview the prime minister of a foreign country, and the next day he may be writing 3 a football match. Sometimes he may be so 4 that he has hardly any time to sleep. And 5 other times he may go on for days 6 out for news, and yet return 7 empty hands.
¡¡¡¡In the beginning, a reporter has to 8 a very wide field. After the early years, he becomes more specialized£¨×¨Ãŵģ©in his work. 9 example, he may finally 10 to write only on politics or sports. Some newspapers have book reviewers. Their job is 11 . They read the 12 books and then write reviews on the ones they like. Then there are those 13 write on films. So they get to see them even 14 they are shown in the cinema. 15 lucky, you would say!
¡¡¡¡A newspaper reporter's job can also be very 16 . A number of them have died rushing from one place to another and if there is a flood or a riot£¨±©ÂÒ£©they may get 17 or even be killed. Three years ago there was a reporter 18 camera was broken by a group of men, 19 they were angry with him for taking their pictures. Dangerous or not, one thing is certain, and that is, their job is always 20 .

¡¡¡¡Social customs and ways are changing. Things which were considered 1 many years ago are now good. Just a few years 2 , it was considered impolite for a man 3 in the street. No man who thought 4 himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself smoking 5 a lady was in the room.
¡¡¡¡Customs 6 change from country to country. Does a man walk 7 the left or the right of a lady in your country? Or doesn't it 8 ? What 9 table manners? Should you use 10 hands when you eat? ¡ªShould you leave 11 in your lap£¨ÈË×ø×Åʱ×ÔÑüÒÔÏÂÖÁϥΪֹµÄ´óÍȲ¿£© 12 on the table?
¡¡¡¡The important thing 13 about social customs is not to do 14 that might make other people 15 uncomfortable, especially if they are your guests. There is 16 old story about a rich nobleman who gave formal£¨ÕýʽµÄ£©dinner party. When the food 17 , one of the guests started to eat his peas 18 a knife. The other guests were surprised, but the nobleman calmly picked up his knife and began to eat 19 . It would have been bad manners to make the guest feel 20 .

¡¡¡¡Scott and his four companions were terribly disappointed. When they got to the South Pole, they found the Norwegians£¨Å²ÍþÈË£©had 1 them in the race to be the first ever to reach it. After 2 the British flag at the Pole, they took a photograph of themselves 3 they started the 950-mile journey back.
¡¡¡¡The journey was unexpectedly 4 , and the joy and excitement about the Pole had gone out of them. The sun hardly 5 . The snow storms always made it impossible to sight the stones they had 6 to mark their way home. To make things 7 , Evans, whom they had all thought of 8¡¡¡¡ the strongest of the five, fell badly into a deep hole in the ice. Having 9 for several days, he suddenly fell down and died.
¡¡¡¡The four who were 10 pushed on at the best speed they could 11 . Captain Oates had been suffering for some time from his 12 feet; at night his feet swelled£¨Ö×ÕÍ£©so large that he could 13 put his boots on the next morning, and he walked bravely although he was in great 14 . He knew his slowness was making it less likely that 15 could save themselves. He asked them to leave him behind in his sleeping-bag, but they refused, and helped him 16 a few more miles, until it was time to put up the 17 for another night.
¡¡¡¡The following morning, 18 the other three were still in their sleeping-bags, he said, ¡°I am just going outside and may be 19 some time.¡± He was never seen again. He had walked out 20 into the snow storm, hoping that his death would help his companions.
