Unhappy people glue(使粘牢) themselves to the television 30 percent more than happy people.
The finding, announced on Thursday,
1
from a survey of nearly 30,000 American adults conducted between 1975 and 2006 as part of the General Social Survey.
2
happy people reported watching an
3
of 19 hours of television per week, unhappy people reported 25 hours a week. The results held even after
4
into account education, income, age and marital status.
In addition, happy individuals were more socially
5
, attended more religious services, voted more and
6
a newspaper more often than their less-chipper(没有精神的) counterparts.
The researchers are not sure, though, whether unhappiness
7
more television-watching or more viewing leads to unhappiness.
In fact, people say they like watching television: Past research has shown that when people watch television they
8
it. In these studies, participants reported that on a
9
from 0 (dislike) to 10 (greatly enjoy), TV-watching was nearly an 8.
But perhaps the high from watching television doesn't
10
.
"These conflicting data
11
that TV may provide viewers with short-run
12
, but at the expense of long-term malaise(精神欠爽)," said researcher John Robinson, a sociologist at the University of Maryland, College Park.
In this case, even the happiest campers could turn into Debbie-downers if they continue to
13
at the TV. The researchers suggest that over time, television-viewing
14
push out other activities that do have more lasting
15
. Exercise and sex come to mind, as do parties and other forms of socialization known to have psychological benefits.
Or, maybe television is simply a refuge(慰藉物) for people who are already
16
.
"TV is not judgmental
17
difficult, so people with
18
social skills or resources for other activities can engage in it," Robinson and UM colleague Steven Martin write in the December issue of the journal Social Indicators Research.
They add, "
19
, chronic unhappiness can be socially and personally debilitating(使人衰弱的) and can interfere with work and most social and personal activities, but even the unhappiest people can click a remote and be passively
20
by a TV."
The researchers say follow-up studies are needed to tease out the relationship between television and happiness.

My chance came at last. Our school was going to hold a sports meet. I knew what it

the time came nearer, I felt quite

. On the first day I came fourth in the 1500m
6
but I was far from
7
because what I wanted most was the highlight of the sports meeting—250x8 relay race. I would run the last leg for my team.
With a shot, the race began. All the students were
8
for their team. The competition was so
9
that I began to feel nervous. Before my turn came, my team was
10
the others. Even worse, I almost dropped the stick when I was trying to
11
it.
12
after that, there was nothing in my mind except to run as fast as possible. Just when I was approaching the finish line, my legs

14
me to go on. To my surprise, I was the first to

16
, I had proved to myself and those who had often laughed at me that I am not
17
at all! My classmates greeted me warmly and I hugged them tightly. I had won the prize as well as their

From the sports meeting, I learnt that sometimes things are not so difficult as they

to be. Just try your best without fear and you might be surprised at the

A few years ago when my youngest son Matt was eight years old, we were getting things together to take to the Salvation Army (救世军) at Christmas time. The boys would go through their old
1
and give away what they didn’t
2
. I made cookies and got together blankets and clothes. After that Matt and I
3
the Christmas package to our local Salvation Army. We unloaded
4
and headed home.
5
we took the corner out of the parking lot, Matt
6
that a baseball glove he had put in the bag had
7
. He said, “Mom, we forgot my glove.” Just then he saw a little boy and his mom sitting on a bench on the side of a building
8
a small playground was. He said, “Mom, can we
9
so that I can give the glove to him?” I said, “
10
.” And we drove to the side of the
11
and went through the gate.
Matt handed the boy the glove and said, “Here, Santa
12
me to give it to you.” He was so
13
to get it! His mom
14
and gave Matt a huge hug. Her eyes were full of tears. “It is the best
15
he could get,” she looked at us and said, “because the
16
thing I could get him this year was a baseball.”
When we got back in the car, Matt said to me, “Mom, God must have made me
17
the baseball glove inside so the little boy could have it — it was
18
to be!” That moment proved my
19
that everything happens for a
20
and I have tried my best to get people to see that ever since!

I am serving in a company in Cheyenne. The work has been challenging, but the
1
are big, and I have been given a rise. The weather has been cold lately.
2
walking has been excellent exercise, I have realized that I need another form of
3
for the winter.
My boyfriend Mike knew of this
4
and he researched some local sites for cheap cars. The minute he
5
me the information about a 1978 Ford Fairmont, I
6
this car was meant to be! I began communicating with the
7
, a man named Dale Meyer. I found out that the car was bought by his grandfather and was still in good
8
. He and his two brothers had
9
learned to drive using this car.
We
10
a price of $400, and fixed a time for a test drive. The day before the test drive, I received a phone call from Dale. He
11
a little nervous, but also excited. He asked simply, “You really
12
this car, don’t you?”
“Of course. I couldn’t love it more,” I gave an enthusiastic
13
. He then said to me, “How about me giving it to you for a dollar?” His offer left me
14
. At that time words
15
me.
I picked up my new Fairmont last night. Dale walked me around the car,
16
its bumps and nicks (磕磕碰碰). As he was telling me the
17
of the car, it seemed that he was losing an old friend. As I was pulling
18
the driveway, he stopped me and said, “Don’t forget to pass this
19
on.”
It was truly a
20
end. Never underestimate the kindness of strangers.

In 1932, my father had to declare bankruptcy (破产). He was ashamed of it, but it came about because of his
1
heart.
He had been in the milk business and every day he
2
milk to many homes. His route(线路)included many people
3
worked at the local steel company. Dad
4
delivering milk even when his customers were unable to
5
him.
After the bankruptcy, he started selling hamburgers from a
6
building he and his brothers had built. That was the
7
of the Poplar Inn, named
8
the row of poplar trees(杨树)nearby. My mother was a good cook, and soon many dishes were
9
to the menu. Later, another two buildings were built and the Poplar Inn
10
much larger.
On Saturdays, Mother would spend the whole day in the kitchen
11
for parties. During dinner, my sister Phyllis and I helped
12
customers. Phyllis would dance, and I would sing the latest songs. Square dances were
13
then and many adults would dance. As the evening went
14
, and children became bored with watching their parents
15
, they were often taken to our bedrooms.
Since Dad had a big heart, it was not
16
for him to help others without asking for payment. Every time my father made a loan (借出的贷款), he
17
out a card, but he never tried to
18
those debts. Finally, he destroyed the cards — therefore there were no
19
at al1.
The Poplar Inn was
20
around 1953 to make way for a new highway. But if I stood there now, instead of hearing traffic, I think I’d hear music and the sound of people laughing.

Two days before Thanksgiving, I was trying to open my mouth wide enough for a mirror and a roll of steel wire. Metal braces (牙齿矫正器)had been on my
1
for weeks, but this was the day for the wire to be adjusted. Only those who have had braces will understand the terrible
2
of being “wired”. For the next 24 hours, it felt like every tooth was being
3
slowly by a giant clawhammer (拔钉锤).
4
drinking water caused pain.
By Thanksgiving Day, I had got used to it.
5
I didn’t use my teeth, the pain was bearable. But this was a day when teeth had to
6
longer than usual. We were
7
at my grandparents’ house with relatives. The house was filled with so many pleasant
8
that we could hardly resist the food. When grandma said, “Dinner is ready!” all the kids
9
to be first in line. I was so excited that I
10
the braces in my mouth and
11
my way up to the head of the line.
I piled my plate high with my favorite corn-on-the-cob(玉米棒子)and
12
my mouth to enjoy it. The pain was
13
. I felt I would never be able to eat again. I put my plate away and ran outside in
14
.
Grandma then took my plate to the
15
. She cut all the corn off that cob and rescued me from my
16
. She handed me my plate piled high with corn. “Thanks,” I said
17
. Then I looked up and
18
a strange light in her eye, a light that is still
19
to me after more than fifty years. That was the Thanksgiving when I discovered something more
20
than good food.

It was Tom’s first visit to England, and he was looking forward to his first journey, on London’s Underground Railway. And against his friends’

. The coach put his arm
5
around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And don’t even plan to come back to the
6
on Saturday.” Saturday arrived, and the game was not going
7
.
In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young man ran onto the sidelines, the
8
and his players were astonished to see their
9
teammate back so soon.
“Coach, please let me
10
. I have just got to play today,” said the young man.
The coach pretended not to
11
him. Never would he let his
12
player in this close playoff game. But the young man
13
, and finally feeling sorry for young man, the coach
14
. This little unknown, who had never played before, was doing everything right. The opposite team could not
15
him. His team began to win.
16
, the coach came to him and said, “Young man,
17
did you do it?”
With
18
in his eyes he said, “Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?” The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, “Dad came to all my games,
19
today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to
20
him I could do it!”

A friend of mine met with an accident driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. What was the
1
was he found himself unable to ask for help-his mobile phone went out of
2
as a result of exhausted battery. Nothing could be done but to
3
in cold wilderness. It was 8 hours later that day broke, and then the
4
of the rescue.
It is almost
5
that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his
6
: “First of all I checked up my
7
conditions and found myself not in fatal danger. As there was no
8
to call for help, I leaned back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from
9
. In this way I dozed (打盹) off.”
His story put an end to my regret for the
10
of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men
11
to explore a mountain cave and got lost.
12
to find a way out in the dark cave they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of
13
. Finally they fell dead in fear and exhaustion. According to the
14
people that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the
15
of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to
16
themselves, they would probably sense a faint light glimmering (闪烁) not far away.
Don’t you think that you can compare it with
17
itself? When you meet with obstacles in life and work, you are lost in darkness.
18
you it’s unclear yet and you needn’t put up struggle
19
. It seems to be a negative attitude,
20
a person who can afford to do so must have foresight as well as a great courage in the first place.

The question of whether war is inevitable is one which has concerned many of the world’s great writers. Before
1
this question, it will be useful to introduce some
2
concepts. Conflict,
3
as opposition among social units-or individuals-directed against one another, is
4
from competition, which
5
opposition among social units
6
seeking to obtain something which is
7
inadequate supply. Competitors may not know about one another, which those who
8
in a conflict do. Conflict and competition are both
9
of opposition. The meaning of opposition has been stated as a process by which social unit function in the disservice of one another, opposition is
10
contrasted to cooperation, a
11
by which social units function in the service of one another. These
12
are necessary because it is important to emphasize that competition between individuals or groups is inevitable in a world of limited
13
, but conflict isn’t . Conflict, nevertheless, is very likely to occur and is probably an essential and desirable
14
of human societies.
Many authors have
15
their arguments that war cannot be avoided on the idea that in the struggle for existence among groups of animals, only those which are best
16
remain alive. In general, however, this struggle in nature is competition, not conflict. Those who fail in this competition
17
starve
to death or are
18
by other types of animals. This struggle for
19
is not similar to human war, but is like the competition of
20
for jobs, markets, and materials. The most important quality of this struggle is the competition for the necessities of life that are not enough to satisfy all.
