Forty-three years seems like a long time to remember the name of a person.I have forgotten the name of an old lady who was a(n)
1
on my paper route when I was a twelve-year-old boy.Yet it seems like just yesterday that she taught me a lesson in
2
.
One afternoon, a friend and I were
3
rocks onto the roof of the old lady’s house
4
her backyard. The object of our play was to observe how the rocks changed to missiles as they
5
to the roof’s edge and shot out into the
6
.
I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and sent it for a ride. The stone was too smooth, however, so it
7
from my hand as I let it go and headed
8
for a small window on the old lady’s back wall.
I was too scared about getting
9
that first night to be concerned about the old lady with the broken window. However, a few days later,
10
I was sure that I hadn’t been discovered, I started to feel
11
for her misfortune.
I made up my mind that I would
12
my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars that I
13
would cover the cost of her window.I put the money in an envelope with a(n)
14
explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the
15
for repairing it.
I waited until it was dark, then put the envelope through the letter slot in her door.
The next day, I
16
the old lady her paper and was able to
17
the warm smile that I was
18
her.She thanked me for the paper and said, “Here, I have something for you.” It was a bag of cookies.I thanked her and ate the cookies as I
19
my route.
After several cookies, I
20
an envelope. When I opened the envelope, I was shocked.Inside was the seven dollars and a short note that said, “I’m proud of you.”

For those who are conditioned to think that learning only happens in a classroom, the world of self-learning can be a little daunting. How do we best take
1
of these new opportunities?
Your interest in the subject is the essential driver of success. You can’t learn what you do not want to learn. Emotion is an important part of the learning
2
. If you are even moderately interested in a subject, give yourself a chance. The key is to get started. If you can create some pleasurable
3
, you may find that the subject grows on you.
Don’t expect to understand things, much less remember them, the first time you study them. Trust that things will get clearer
4
your brain comes to grips with new information. It is like a cross-word puzzle. As you start to put the pieces together, or string the words together, the full picture becomes clearer. The brain learns all the time, but
5
its own schedule. Learning does not take place according to a schedule laid down by a curriculum or teacher. Some things are easier to learn than others. Some things just take
6
to click in. Keep at it, and you will gradually find that things that seem difficult at first , will become easy with time.
Your brain is struggling to form patterns to
7
new input from your learning activities. Sometimes, no matter how long you focus on one subject, your brain is not going to pick it up. If you are stuck, move
8
. Then cover the same general information from a different source, a different book, or a podcast, or an online lecture or a video. Try to become a grazing learner, roaming the countryside,
9
a feedlot learner, just standing there in one spot. The broader your base, the easier it is to learn. Just as the “rich get richer”, the more you know,
10
you can learn.
Take full advantage of the Internet, iTunes, and
11
mobile devices, not to mention good old-fashioned books and magazines. Learn during “dead time”. Listen in your car, on the train, or
12
jogging. Have your learning with you while waiting in the doctor’s office, or listen while checking out at the supermarket. Anytime is
13
time. Remember, you are learning through exposure, not by nailing things down. It is more like moisture accumulation in a
14
, rather than building a brick wall.
The more varied your learning content, and the more varied the ways in which you learn, the
15
the puzzle will become. Different learning activities suit different people, at different times of the day. Vary your activities in order to keep your interest level
16
. Even if listening and reading work best for you, treat yourself to the odd video lecture, or get-together with other learners. This will renew your batteries.
The “loneliness of the distance learner” is a thing of the
17
. Join a learning communityon the web, where members share their knowledge and experience. Search for the communities that suit your interests and learning style. You will find encouragement, advice and stimulus from fellow learners,
18
from tutors, teachers and coaches. In these communities, you can measure your progress against your own goals, or compare your experience
19
that of other learners. You can even teach and help others, which is a great way to learn.
Never has it been easier nor more exciting to be a learner. Let constant learning be a major part of your life-style. The
20
will be constant, personally, socially, and professionally.

Like poorly managed stress, anger that isn’t handled in a healthy way can be not only uncomfortable, but even damaging to one’s health and personal life. Consider the following research on anger:
One study from the University of Washington School of Nursing studied
1
problems in husbands and wives. Researchers cited(引用) previous evidence that anger problems and depressive symptoms have been linked to all major
2
of death, but found that wives specifically found a greater association between anger and
3
of depression,
4
men tended to instead experience an
5
between anger and health problems.
According to a study from Ohio State University, those who had less control over their anger
6
to heal more slowly from wounds. Researchers gave blisters(起疱膏) to 98 participants and found that, after 8 days, those who had less control over their anger also tended to be
7
healers.
8
, those participants also tended to have more cortisol (a stress hormone) in their system during the blistering procedure,
9
that they may be more stressed by difficult situations as well.
10
study from Harvard School of Public Health studied hostility(敌对行为) in men and found that those with
11
rates of hostility not only had poorer pulmonary functioning (breathing problems), but experienced higher rates of decline as they aged.
Research with children and
12
shows that anger
13
is important for the younger set as well. Findings showed that youth who cope inappropriately with their anger are at greater
14
for problem-ridden(受…支配的) interpersonal relationships. Their
15
is also at risk; those who cope poorly with anger tend to have more negative
16
when it comes to both mental and general health. This highlights the fact that anger management is an important skill to
17
early.
These are just a few of the many studies linking anger to
18
and emotional health problems, from the obvious to the
19
. Because poorly managed anger presents such a significant problem in so many areas of life, it’s important to take steps toward learning and using healthy anger management techniques in daily life,

The first day of college I met a little old lady. I was

. “Why are you here at such a young age?” I asked.
“To meet a rich husband,
2
, have children, and then retire and travel!” she replied

.
I laughed, but we became close friends. For the whole
4
we would leave class together and
5
nonstop. I was always listening as she
6
her wisdom and experience.
At the end of the term Rose was invited to make a

because we stop playing. The only

of staying young is being happy and achieving success. You have to find humor and

12
and don’t even know it! Growing older doesn’t
13
growing up. Anybody can grow older doing
14
. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. My idea is that one grows up by always finding
15
in life. Have no regrets. The elderly don’t have regrets for what we did,
16
for things we didn’t do. The only people who fear death are those with

I put a package of small gold colored foil (金箔) angels in my purse after my illness. The package was
1
and the angels fell out into my purse.
On the way home, I was at the store
2
for something and change was
3
. I dug in, got the change and gave it to the
4
. I didn’t realize there were also angels sticking (粘) to the
5
! Well, she said, “Oh, angels for
6
! Thank you! Come back and see me anytime!”
This
7
several times that day, with almost the same reaction at
8
places, with different people. So now I keep the angels in there and
9
dispense (分发) them with the change.
This little
10
has led to some interesting conversations --- for example, when I did go back to the same
11
where the lady received the
12
angles, she told me how much she
13
them and kept them by her bed.
She then told me, “I was
14
as a child, I couldn’t walk or talk. My grandparents told me that if I didn’t
15
I would be healed because the angel was
16
me. I started praying, and within a year I was totally healed! I’m so
17
for this healing!”
She also told me that the first time she
18
me, she thought I was an angel! I then gave her some more angels, and
19
she acted like I had given her a million dollars!
What a lovely
20
!
I plan on always keeping the little gold angels in my purse and dispensing them everywhere. When I do, I don’t say anything --- I just give them with the change.

Have you ever imagined that you could be cloned(克隆) like Dolly, the sheep, in the not too distant future?
The news that a human embryo(胚胎) has been
1
cloned for the first time has caused mixed reactions(反应).
The
2
was carried out by scientists from the Advanced Cell Technology Inc(ACT), in Massachusetts, US. The group
3
the news on November 25.
This is
4
human being. A clone is alive, it walks, it breathes, said Jamie Grifo, a(n)
5
on the study of cloning at New York University School of Medicine.
“This is a set of cells in a lab that will be used to
6
someone’s life.”
Such research could lead to treatment for
7
such as heart disease, AIDS and even cancer,
8
scientists.
Despite high hopes from other scientists, the news raised concerns immediately from religious and political leaders. Several
9
in the US do not allow human cloning. President George W. Bush also made it clear that he is
10
any type of human cloning. However, the scientists at ACT said they have no interest at present in
11
an early embryo into
12
.
Animal have been cloned repeatedly since Dolly, the sheep
13
in 1997. And there were no real technical
14
to stand in the way of scientists making a cloned human embryo.
This time the research group used traditional cloning technology with a human
15
.
16
it was given DNA from an adult cell, the egg began to
17
.
18
it was stopped from becoming a baby-at a stage in which it was
19
a ball of cells. The
20
technology has been used to clone sheep , cattle and monkeys.

When William, a 10-year-old boy planned to learn the piano, the music teacher was reluctant (不愿意)to accept him. She
1
her students to start their music lessons at a young age when their
2
were able to move quickly and easily.
“William, why do you want to learn the piano?” the teacher asked.
“I want to play for my mother.”
She noticed the
3
in his eyes as he answered her. She had no heart to
4
and accepted William as her student. But at each music lesson, William appeared to be in a hurry and played
5
“My mother is waiting outside for me,” he would tell the teacher. She was tempted to advise William not to
6
his time with lessons anymore as he
7
hit the right notes.
8
there was something about William — - she was fascinated with the tender look in his eyes
9
he mentioned “Mother”.
Suddenly, William stopped coming for his lessons. At the end of the semester year, the music teacher decided to
10
a piano recital (独奏会) for her students and she asked them to participate.
She was
11
to find William’s application to contribute a musical piece. She would place him last in the recital
12
he made mistakes.
The day came and William appeared.
13
it was his turn to play, William bowed before the audience and said he was thankful for the music teacher’s
14
with him. “Tonight I am dedicating (献)my music to my mother.” he said.
Everyone later asked why William did not bring his mother as she would
15
be proud. William replied, “My mother was
16
and she could never
17
me play during her life time.
18
she sacrificed her time and money to let me learn the piano. This morning Mother passed away. I am sure she is now
19
as she can hear my piano recital. I chose a piece of piano music by Beethoven. As you all know, Beethoven was deaf by the end of his career. But music always symbolized his
20
for freedom and I would like to dedicate it to Mother.”

Cure for Sorrow
There is an old story telling about a woman whose only son died in an accident. In her

3
ways do you have to bring my son back to life? I will
4
you with all I have if you can.”
Instead of sending her away or
5
with her, he said to her, “Fetch me a mustard(芥末) seed from a home that has never
6
sorrow. We will use it to drive the sorrow out of your life.” The woman went off at once in
7
of that magical mustard seed.
She came first to a splendid apartment,
8
at the door, and said in a
9
voice, “I am looking for a home that has never known sorrow. Is this such a(n)

that I want? It is very important to me.”
11
, she didn’t get what she wanted, even without a single word of
12
. They told her that she had come to the wrong place. And they began to
13
all the tragic things that recently had happened to them.
The woman said to herself, “Who is better able to help these poor,
14
people than I, though I also have had misfortune of my own?” She
15
to comfort them till they
16
. Then she went on searching for a home that had never known sorrow. But
17
she turned up, in small cottages or in other places, she found one
18
after another of sadness and misfortune. She became so
19
in helping other people out of their sorrow that finally she forgot about her quest for the special mustard seed, in fact, never
20
that it had driven the sorrow out of her life.

What’s more
A few years ago, I had a job that almost destroyed me. My
1
was that I loved my job too much and couldn’t get
2
of it. Working for the company was happier than any other
3
. In the morning, I couldn’t
4
to get to the office. At night, I left it unwillingly(不愿意地). Part of my mind
5
at work even when I was at
6
with my kids at night.
Not
7
, all other parts of my life shriveled (枯萎) . I nearly lost contact (交谈、联系) with my
8
, seeing little of my wife or my two sons. I lost contact with my old friends. I even
9
to lose contact with myself. Then one evening, I
10
home to tell the boys I wouldn’t go back in time to say good night. I’d already missed five
11
this week. Sam, the younger of the two, said that was
12
, but asked me to wake him up
13
I got home. I explained that I’d be back so late that he would have gone to sleep
14
, and it was probably better if I saw him the next morning. But he
15
. I asked him why. He said he just wanted to know I was there, at home. To this day, I can’t
16
exactly what happened to me at that moment. Yet I suddenly knew I had to
17
my job.
After I said in public that I had given up my job, I received a number of
18
. Most people understood me, but a few people were
19
. They wrote to tell me that I shouldn’t think myself virtuous (有道德的). They think leaving an important job to spend
20
time with my family was not virtuous..
