In 1985 a France television company sent its reporters to the Paris Metro(地铁).They took
1
to see what passengers would do if they saw someone

on the platform or trains. The incidents looked

and they were all done with the help of actors. However, very

people tried to help, and most passengers

not to notice. In one of the

passengers to help, they all refused. This is not only a French

his students out to rob their own cars. The students didn’t try to

what they were doing.About 80 people

250 car thefts, and only twelve of them tried to

sat down next to the car and

to buy a camera and a television set a student was

from the back seat of his own car.The professor

A father was sitting at his desk poring (仔细研究) over his monthly bills
1
his young son rushed in and announced, “Dad, because this is your
2
and you’re
3
years old, I’m going to give you
4
kisses, one for each year!” When the boy started making good on his word, the father exclaimed, “Oh, Andrew, don’t do it now; I’m too
5
!”
The youngster immediately fell
6
as tears welled up in his big blue eyes. Apologically the father said, “You can finish
7
.”
The boy said nothing but
8
walked out of the room,
9
written over his face. That evening the father said, “Come and finish the
10
now, Andrew!” But the boy didn’t
11
. The father didn’t think it serious and soon it went out of his mind.
45 , a few days later after this incident, the boy had an
12
and was drowned. His heartbroken father wrote...
“If only I could tell him how much I
13
my thoughtless words, and could be assured that he knows how much my
14
is aching and how I miss him.”
49is a two-way street. Any loving act must be warmly accepted
15
it will be taken as rejection and can leave a scar. If we are too busy to
16
and receive love, we are too busy!
17
is more important than responding with love
18
the cry for love from those who are near and
19
to us, because there may be no chance at all as in the
20
of the little boy. Cherish every chance!

The art of giving gifts is to give something that others cannot buy for themselves.
------A.A. Milne
I have spent most of my career as a traveling salesman. There’s
1
lonelier than having meals myself in a coffee shop. One year, my five-year-old daughter Jeanine gave me a
2
. It was a soft toy penguin with a hand –painted
3
saying “I love My Dad!” Tears came into my eyes and immediately, I gave it a
4
place on my desk.
Soon I had to leave on another business
5
. This time when I was
6
, I put the penguin in my suitcase. After that day, Jeanine always helped me pack with the penguin. Many years
7
by and that little penguin has traveled with me hundreds of thousands of miles all across America and over to Europe. We have also made many friends
8
the way.
9
one afternoon after leaving my hotel, I discovered that the penguin was
10
. Frantically, I phoned the hotel. The clerk
11
, saying it hadn’t been reported. But half an hour later, he called back to say that my penguin had been found. It was late,
12
I drove several hours to get my little
13
, arriving near midnight.
When I rushed to the hotel, I found that it was waiting at the front desk. In the lobby(大厅), some
14
business travelers looked at us, I think, with some
15
and envy(羡慕). Someone came out to shake my hand. One man told me that he had even volunteered to
16
it to me the very next day.
Jeannie is in college now and I don’t travel
17
much anymore. The penguin spends most of its time
18
on my dresser--- a reminder that
19
is the best traveling companion. All those years on the road, it was the one thing I never left home

Several weeks ago, my friend advised us to sell some of our things which we will not use any more. I thought it was a good chance to
1
my 7-year-old son’s room and
2
some toys that were no longer suitable for him to play with. We
3
that all the money we got from selling the toys would be his money.
The night before the
4
, we loaded up the truck with toys and a little bike that was too
5
for him. In the yard he
6
the bike for the last time and then happily put it onto the truck. This little bike had at least two previous owners as far as we
7
. It wasn’t in the best
8
and was certainly not new, but the tires were
9
good.
We put a price of $10 on it, but it didn’t sell. So, after the sale was
10
, my friend put it on the sidewalk with a sign that
11
“FREE BIKE”. Within five minutes her doorbell rang. A little boy was
12
there. In poor English he asked whether the bike was
13
free. She said yes and that he could have it for
14
. He smiled, got on the bike and rode away.
Later that evening when I told my son how much money he had made at the sale, he was very
15
, shouting happily. He asked about a few of his things, wondering
16
they had been sold. When he asked about the bike, I told him about the little boy and that made him
17
. He was much happier than when I told him how much he had
18
. He was so happy to
19
that someone else would make good
20
of that little bike!

About 2:00 a.m. Monday, a California highway police officer was hit by an SUV. The officer was
1
about
2
feet before landing on grass. The officer was
3
a motorist whose car had broken down on the freeway.
The police officer was listed in steady(稳定的) condition at a nearby

white SUV drove onto the shoulder where the

cars were parked. The SUV

The driver had no license and no insurance. He had been charged with driving after drinking a

. The only time we can get them

1
not uncommon to hear Chinese praising the play of their women on the volleyball court and
2
the play of the men. The topic is often laughed off as a joke, but
3
a reason for the perceived (感觉到)
4
of women’s athletics in China.
At the 2000 Sydeny Games, China’s women won
5
gold medals than the men. In Athens in 2004, the women won 19 gold medals, while the men won 12.
6
, American women accounted for 12 of the country’s 35 gold medals in 2004.
This summer, again the women are widely
7
to help with China’s medal tally(记录).wrestling coach Zhang Zhetian is counting
8
the women’s team for a wrestling medal. “Guys—you’ve got to push them more.” He told the Wall Street Journal.
Tennis coach Sun Jinfang shares this view: “Women know
9
eat bitterness,” she said. Sun has helped to put four double players into the Women’s Tennis Association top 30. no male Chinese tennis players are ranked.
Some experts believe they’ve
10
a reason for the disparity(不同). China has long respected strong women,
11
the folk hero Hua Mulan and the much-beloved former Vice-premier Wu Yi. This ideology(意识形态), they think, creates a space
12
women who are loyal, filial(孝顺) or who give service to the nation
13
.
“Besides China, no other nation gives equal financial support and media attention to
14
sports. That’s why China
15
challenge the US in medals---it treats men and women
16
,” Susan Brownell, a professor at
17
University of Missouri in St. Louis who
18
Chinese sports, told the Wall Street Journal.
Now, however, more money is being
19
on men’s professional sports, which usually attract more views. This could change the gender gap as sports grow
20
commercialized (商业化的) in China, according to the Wall Street Journal.

If you think you are sick, you are sick no matter what
1
says.
2
, if you believe in your doctor, and if he tells that you are going to feel better, you probably will. The
3
of the mind on the body does exist and sometimes can be powerful. It exists whether one is
4
of it or not.
Take the
5
of Mrs. Green, for example. She was unable to get to sleep at night and was too tired during the day to do some simple things that she
6
enjoy doing. She had headaches more often which
7
her from reading or watching TV. The more she thought about her conditions,
8
she felt. At last she went to
9
her doctor, whom she had known for years. The doctor listened to her and gave her a very
10
examination. Then he said to her, “ There is nothing
11
wrong with you physically, but I accept the fact
12
you don’t feel well. I’m going to give you some pills that should help. I want you to
13
one after dinner and one half an hour
14
you go to bed tonight. Call me tomorrow and tell me
15
you feel.
16
Mrs. Green telephoned, “Doctor, I had the first
17
night’s sleep in two months. What is in this pills
18
?” The doctor said, “It is an old formula(配方) I have
19
for years. Just
20
taking them for a week.” Turning to the nurse, he said, “It’s wonderful what a little baking soda(苏打) can do.”

The latest reform in testing is the computerized test. Test questions and answer choices are presented on the
1
and students can answer with a tap of the keyboard or a click of the mouse. Before the actual test begins, there usually is an instruction showing how to use the computer to
2
the questions. Scores are displayed on the screen at the end of the test so that a student has immediate feedback
3
having to return several days later for results.
Some computerized tests are “adaptive”. This means that a test question is selected from a large pool of items based on how the test taker has responded to the
4
questions. The first question presented is of medium difficulty. If the test taker answers
5
, the next item will be more difficult. If he or she answers incorrectly, the next question will be easier. The computer

I made up my mind to drive to South Carolina to meet my friends in my used car. Though I had only been there once
1
and did not know the
2
very well. I was on the
3
after I had made some enquiries.
At Ashvelle, there was a crossroad where I could go on along the main road or I could take a short cut(小道,近路). The short cut was to
4
several hills and was dangerous, I hesitated (犹豫)for a little while and then chose the main road, for I wanted to be
5
.
Something strange happened
6
I drove a long way and found it was not the correct road that I wanted to
7
, but the hilly road I decided to avoid. I realized that it was at the
8
that I had made the
9
mistake. “What shall I do?” I asked myself. If I went back to take that road again, it would be very late by the time I got to Columbia. Thinking it
10
, I decided to go on. “If
11
people can go along this road, why can’t I?” I
12
myself.
The short cut, to my surprise, was not that
13
. In fact, it was only a very peaceful country road,
14
up and down two low
15
.There was
16
traffic. On both sides of the road, you could see trees, wild flowers, and
17
with cows and horses. My fear was
18
with the wind. Listening to the beautiful country music over my car stereo (立体声), I drove on and
19
the scenery which was so quiet and so natural. Even my used car forgot to give me
20
. It was just in this light heartedness that I arrived at my destination. My friends, after they heard what had happened to me, all said it sounded like an adventure.
