I have been blessed with the opportunity in my life. It took the near-death experience of my dad to make me realize that my purpose in life is to
1
others. My dad suffered from leukemia(白血病) in 1998.
2
the pain and treatment that he endured inspired me to be a more kind and
3
person. I realized life is just too
4
and it was time for me to make some changes — do the things in life that I wanted to do without making
5
why I couldn’t do them.
My dad
6
a bone marrow transplant(骨髓移植) operation, and after that he was able to reuse his own “cleaned” marrow, so a donor(捐献者) was not needed. That was excellent
7
because donors who are a match are hard to come by. That
8
me to become a bone marrow donor and hopefully help someone else one day. I also
9
money for the cancer patients. Yet, I was not satisfied with just that. I had to do more, I
10
blood every other month and seek opportunities to do other acts of kindness daily. The opportunity, some days, presents itself very
11
and some days I have to seek it out. Either way, it comes.
I would like to
12
one of my favorite quotes with you all.
“In an average lifetime, a person
13
about sixty-five thousand miles. That’s two and half times around the world I wonder
14
your steps will take you. I wonder how you’11 use the rest of the
15
you’re given.”
I want to use my miles to create foot prints of love in this world.

Jane’s mother worked on the farm from dawn till dark, which just could make ends meet(量入为出,收支平衡). To make Jane live a
1
life, Mother was very careful about spending money.
2
, Jane didn’t understand her. Every day Mother was busy with her
3
while Jane was studying at school, so they had little time to enjoy themselves.
One day, Mother realized Jane was unhappy and even
4
to her, so she decided to go
5
with Jane to make Jane happy.
On Sunday morning they went happily to the snowfield. Since they were
6
in white clothes, the manager advised them to buy ski clothes. He said
7
there was an accident, they might be easily
8
in their ski clothes. Mother couldn’t
9
them, so she refused.
Then they went skiing in their white clothes. They were skiing happily on the
10
when suddenly the snowfield began to
11
.It was the snowslide (雪崩).They ran a long way and
12
the snowslide finally, but they couldn’t find their way. Later, a helicopter (直升机) was flying above,
13
people on it couldn’t see or hear them. Jane was
14
because she had hurt her head seriously and
15
dropped on the snow. Just then an idea struck Mother. She cut her wrist(手腕)
16
and then bright red blood dropped down on the snowfield. A red SOS was on the snow. At last Jane
17
, but Mother died.
Every time I

, I believe anyone who hears the tragedy will

Nearly twenty years has passed, I still remember my favourite professor, James Sehwartz. And almost all his students are his friends, and almost all his students know his life story.
When James was a teenager, his father
1
him to a fur (毛皮)factory where he worked . This was during the Great Depression(大萧条). The
2
was to get James a job.
He entered the factory, and immediately felt as if the walls had closed in around him. The room was dark and hot, the windows covered with dust, and the
3
were packed tightly together, running like trains. The fur hairs were flying,
4
the air thicker, and the workers, sewing the pieces of fur together, were bent over their needles
5
the boss marched up and down the rows, shouting and forcing them to go faster. James could hardly
6
. He stood next to his father, frozen with fear, hoping the boss wouldn’t
7
at him, either.
During lunch break, his father took James to the boss and pushed him in front of him,
8
if there was any work for his son. But unfortunately, the answer was “no”, because at that time no one would
9
it up once he takes a job.
However, for James, it was a blessing(福气) . He hated the place. He made a(an)
10
that he would never do any work that brought
11
to someone else, and that he would never allow himself to
12
money from others who would lose their jobs for him.
“What will you do?” his mother , Eva , would ask him.
“I don’t know,” he would say. He ruled out(排除)law, because he didn’t like
13
, and he ruled out medicine , because he couldn’t take the
14
of blood.
15
, my best professor became a teacher, he thought it was the job not to hurt anybody.

I know I should have told the headmaster at the time. That was my real
1
.
He had gone out of the study for some
2
, leaving me alone. In his absence I looked to see
3
was on his desk. In the
4
was a small piece of paper on which were written the
5
“English Writing Prize 1949. History Is a Serious of Biographies (人物传记)”.
A(n)
6
boy would have avoided looking at the title as soon as he saw the
7
. I did not. The subject of the English Writing Prize was kept a
8
until the start of the exam so I could not
9
reading it.
When the headmaster
10
, I was looking out of the window.
I should have told him what had
11
then. It would have been so
12
to say: “I’m sorry, but I
13
the title for the English Writing Prize on your desk. You’11 have to
14
it.”
The chance passed and I did not
15
it. I sat the exam the next day and I won. I didn’t
16
to cheat, but it was still cheating anyhow.
That was thirty-eight years
17
when I was fifteen. I have never told anyone about it before,
18
have I tried to explain to myself why not.
The obvious explanation is that I could not admit I had seen the title
19
admitting that I had been looking at the things on his desk.
20
there must have been more behind it. Whatever it was, it has become a good example of how a little mistake can trap (使陷入) you in a more serious moral corner (道德困境).

Parents’ blessing will play a great part in the growth of their children. My father wrote me a valuable letter before his death, one part of which always
1
. “I know you will do
2
great that will set you among the very best one day in the future.”
Since I first read his
3
at 12, they have lived in my heart.
4
,I knew that my dad’s believing in me gave me permission to believe in
5
. “You will do something great.” He didn’t know
6
that would mean, but whenever I felt
7
of myself, I remember my father’s words, and
8
he were here, so I could ask, “Is this what you were
9
about, Dad?”
Many years have passed, and I believe that my father
10
have been proud when I
11
from basic training and became a rescue swimmer. Lately, I’ve come to realize he’d want me to move
12
to what comes next: to be proud of, and believe in someone else.
Yes, it’s time to all of us to
13
writing our own letters to our children. They look to us with the same
14
. “Is this it, Daddy? Am I doing fine?” It’s why every child growing up says, “Watch me!” Our children don’t
15
because they are not afraid to fail. They are only afraid of failing
16
.
Remember to give your children
17
to succeed. If you don’t have children, then write a letter to someone who
18
you. They are waiting for you to believe in them. Trust me, love will be
19
real and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts: “
20
! You will do something great.” Not having that blessing from someone they love may be the only thing holding them back.

The students at Sandy’s high school were badly shaken by the news that a classmate had
1
himself. On the suicide note was written: “It’s hard to
2
when nobody cares if you die.”
Glen, a teacher, realized this was a
3
moment about the importance of making people feel
4
. He asked his class to imagine they were about to
5
and to write a note “telling someone how and why you
6
him or her.”
Sandy, who had a
7
relationship with her mother, decided to write her mother. Her letter
8
“We’ve had some
9
times and I haven’t always been a very good
10
,but I know I’m lucky to have you in my life. You’re the
11
person I’ve ever known, And even when I disagree with you, I never
12
you love me and want what’s best for me. Thanks for not
13
up on me”.
When her mom read the note, she cried and hugged Sandy
14
but said little.
The next morning, Sandy found a
15
on her mirror: “Dearest Sandy, I want you to know being your mother is ,by far, the most important thing in my life.
16
I got your note, I thought I had lost your love and
17
. I felt like such a failure. I intended to
18
it all last night. Your note saved my
19
.”
Be careful not to underestimate the
20
of expressed appreciation. It won’t always save a life, but it will always make someone’s life better.

Most worthwhile careers require some kind of specialized training. Therefore, the choice of an
1
should be made even before choice of a curriculum in high school. Actually,
2
, most people make several job choices during their working lives,
3
because of economic and industrial changes and partly to improve
4
position. The "one perfect job" does not exist. Young people should
5
enter into a broad flexible training program that will
6
them for a field of work rather than for a single
7
.
Unfortunately many young people have to make career plans
8
benefit of help from a competent vocational counselor or psychologist. Knowing
9
about the occupational world, or themselves for that matter, they choose their lifework on a hit-or-miss
10
. Some drift from job to job. Others
11
to work in which they are unhappy and for which they are not fitted.
One common mistake is choosing an occupation for
12
real or imagined prestige .
Too many high-school students - or their parents for them - choose the professional field,
13
both the relatively small percentage of workers in the professions and the extremely high educational and personal
14
. The imagined or real prestige of a profession or a White-collar job is
15
good reason for choosing it as life's work.
16
, these occupations are not always well paid. Since a large percentage of jobs are in mechanical and manual work, the
17
of young people should take serious
18
into these fields.
Before making an occupational choice, a person should have a general idea of what he wants
19
life and how hard he is willing to work to get it. Some people desire social prestige, others intellectual satisfaction. Some want security; others are willing to take
20
for financial gain. Each occupational choice has its demands as well as its rewards.

One day around 5:30 pm, I was going home on a bus and everybody on the bus was quiet. People had just
1
from work, students had just finished their
2
class and everybody was a little
3
from a long day. I was just looking outside of the
4
without any specific(具体的)thought in my mind. It was the same
5
I have seen many times before, people hurrying home.
In front of me, there was a guy who didn’t look very clean.
6
he was looking out of the window, he suddenly
7
to me and pointed at something outside. “Hey, look! ”He had a big smile on his face. I turned to the
8
he was pointing in and there it was the beautiful Catalina mountains burning with a beautiful
9
. He turned to other people on the bus and told them to look at the mountains. He
10
“Wow” and “It’s so beautiful” again and again. Everybody on the bus
11
the view indeed.
The
12
view also helped me to
13
my long tiring day with a good feeling in my heart. But, more
14
, I was so inspired to see that this man wanted to
15
the beautiful view with everybody on the bus, totally strangers. His
16
act made me accidentally find something that I had lost which I didn’t even know I had lost. He made me
17
that I had lost the feelings and the
18
I used to have every day. In my daily life, many things had
19
their color and movement, but he
20
me that things are still there—they never get lost.

Elderly people respond (反应) best to a calm and unhurried environment. This is not always easy to
1
as their behavior can sometimes be irritating (令人恼怒的). If they get
2
or upset, then they may become more confused(糊涂的) and more difficult to look after.
3
sometimes it can be extremely difficult, it is best to be
4
and not to get upset yourself. You should always
5
old people to do as much as possible for themselves but be ready to
6
a helping hand when necessary.
Failing memory makes it
7
for the elderly to recall all the basic kinds of information we
8
for granted. The obvious way to help in this
9
is to supply the information that is missing and help them make
10
of what is going on. You must use every opportunity to provide information,
11
remember to keep it simple and easy to understand.
When the elderly person makes
12
statements e.g. about going out to his or her old
13
or visiting a dead relative,
14
in a calm matter-of-fact fashion: "You are retired now. Will you come and help me with the dishes?"
We depend
15
on the information provided by signposts, clocks, calendars and newspapers. These assist us to
16
and direct our behavior. Confused old people need these
17
all the time to compensate(弥补) for their memory.
Encourage them to use
18
boards or diaries for important
19
events and label(标注) the contents of different cupboards and drawers. Many other aids such as information cards,
20
photos, notes, addresses or shopping lists could help in individual case.

One day the employees of a large company in St.Louis, Missouri returned from their lunch break. They were

with a sign on the front door which said: “Yesterday the person who has been
2
your growth in this company passed away.We invite you to join the
3
in the room that has been prepared in the gym.”
At first everyone was
4
to hear that one of their colleagues had died,
5
after a while they started getting
6
about who this person might be.
The excitement
7
as the employees arrived at the gym to pay their
8
respects.Everyone wondered: “Who is this person that was in the way of my progress? Well,
9
he’s no longer here!”
10
the employees got closer to the coffin (棺材) and when they looked inside it they became
11
.They stood over the coffin,
12
and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their
13
.
There was a
14
inside the coffin: Everyone who looked inside it would see
15
.There was also a sign next to the mirror that said: “There is
16
one person in this world who is really capable of setting
17
to your growth: it’s YOU.”
Yes! You are the only person who can help yourself. You are the only person who can
18
your happiness and your success.Your life changes when you change, when you go
19
your limiting beliefs, when you realize that you are the only one
20
for your life.
