It was a normal summer night, humidity(潮湿)hung in the thick air. The only sound was my sister’s heavy
1
from the bed next to me.
I couldn’t go to
2
, partly because of my cold and partly because of my
3
for the next day. My mum had said that tomorrow was going to be a
4
.
Sweat stuck to my aching body. Finally, I gathered enough
5
to sit up. I looked out of my small window into the night. There was a big bright
6
hanging in the sky, giving off a magic glow.
My sister turned over as though she was as light as air. Why could she sleep soundly? Why wasn’t she
7
too? Did she know about tomorrow?
I couldn’t stand the
8
anymore, so I did what I always do to make myself feel better. I went to the
9
and picked up my toothbrush and toothpaste. Pouring the red paste onto the brush, I cleaned back and forth, up and down.
Then I walked downstairs to look for some
10
of movement, some life. Gladiator, my cat,
11
me as he meowed(猫叫)his sad song. He was on the old orange couch (长沙发), sitting up on his front legs,
12
something to happen. He looked at me as if to say, “I’m
13
, pet me. I need a good hug.” Even the couch begged me to sit on it.
In one movement I settled down onto the soft
14
. This couch represented my birth, my parents’ marriage, and hundreds of other little
15
.
As I held Gladiator, my heart started beating heavily. My mind was
16
with questions: What’s life? Am I really alive? Are you listening to me? Every time I moved my hand down Gladiator’s body, I had a
17
thought; each touch sang a different song.
I forgot all about the
18
and the next day’s surprise. The
19
was so full of warmth and silence that I sank into its arms. Falling asleep with the big cat in my arms, I felt all my worries

Homebuyers nationwide are watching housing prices go up, up, and up. “How high can they go ?” is the common question that
1
in the city is asking. But right now, few people seem to have the answer. “
2
interest rates(利率) stay at about
3
percent, there’s no way of knowing,”, said a local Guangzhou economist.
“It’s crazy,” said Li Hua, who is
4
a house near the river. “In 1993, I bought my first place, a two-bedroom apartment in Haizhu district, for 100,000 yuan. My friends thought that I was overpaying and said it just wasn’t worth it. Five years later , I had to move to Shenzhen. I49 it for 160,000 yuan, which was nice profit. Last year, while
5
friends here, I saw in the local paper that exact same
6
was for sale for 450,000 yuan!”
It is a seller’s
7
. Homebuyers feel like they have to offer at least
8
percent more than the asking price just to have a chance. Li Hua says the situation is really diffcult. “Whether you decide to buy or decide not to buy, you still feel like you made the
9
decision. If you buy, you feel like you overpaid. If you don’t buy, you want to kick yourself for passing up a great
10
.”
Everyone says prices must fall, but everyone hopes it will happen the day after they sell their house.55 government officials have no idea what the future will bring. “All we can say is that these things change,” said the state director of housing. “What goes up must come down.”

I was tired and hungry after a long day of work.
When I walked into the living-room, my 12-year-old son looked
1
at me and said “I love you.” I didn’t know what to say.
2
several seconds all I could do was to stand there and
3
down at him. My first thought was he must need
4
while doing his homework
5
he was trying to prepare me for some
6
.
Finally, I asked, “What was that all about?” “
7
.” He said, “My teacher said we should tell our parents that we love them and see what they say. It’s an experiment. ”
The next day I
8
his teacher at my office to find out more about this “experiment” and how the other parents had responded .
“
9
, most of the fathers had the same reaction as you did.” The teacher said, “When I first
10
we try this, I asked the children what they thought their parents would say. Some of them thought their parents would have heart trouble. The point is,” the teacher explained, “feeling
11
is an important part of
12
. It’s something all human beings
13
. What I’m trying to tell the children is that it’s too
14
that we don’t express those feelings. A boy should be able to tell his dad that he loves him. ”
The teacher, a middle-aged man, understands how difficult it is for some of us to say the things that would be good for us to say.
When my son came to me
15
, I held on to him for an extra second. And just
16
he pulled away, I said in my deepest, most manly voice, “Hey, I love you. ”
I didn’t know if saying that would make
17
of us healthier, but we did feel pretty
18
. Maybe
19
time when one of my children says “I love you”, it would not take me a whole
20
to think of the right answer.

Mr. Hadley was my 6th grade teacher. I was a tall thin girl weighing barely a hundred pounds. I ended up taking a lot of
1
especially from the boys, because of my appearance. I became an extremely
2
young lady.
One day
3
in the 6th grade class was told by Mr. Hadley that we would be
4
to stand up in front of the class and read the
5
that we had completed.
When my turn came, I
6
to stand up in front of all those students and
7
to their tricks. Mr. Hadley came over to me and again
8
me to read my report. I gave it back to him. He walked to the front of the
9
and said, "Yvonne has a very good report here and I think everyone
10
to hear her read it. If I hear anyone making
11
noises or making fun of her in any way, I will let you fail right here and now. Understood?"
Mr. Hadley walked back to me and
12
me the paper, asking me to go to the front of the class. I walked to the front of the class on legs
13
were shaking and I felt a(n)
14
in my chest. Everyone were all quiet, including those boys. I stood there trying to gain
15
.
Mr. Hadley walked over to me putting his arm around me, "You can do it. I have
16
in you!" His words helped calm me. I
17
the report and instead of the kids laughing at me and
18
me, they all stood up and clapped their hands.
From that day on the kids never made fun of me again and some
19
made friends with me. I continued to be quite shy all through school
20
from that day on I knew if I had to stand up in front of class again. I could do it.

I remember my dad teaching me the power of language at a very young age.
One fairly interesting event happened when I was eight. As a kid, I was always climbing trees, poles, and
1
around upside down from the rafters (房梁) of our house. So, it
2
to no surprise for my dad to
3
me at the top of a 30-foot tree swinging back and forth. Without realizing the tree could break or I could get
4
, I just thought it was
5
to be up so high.
My cousin, Tammy, was in the same tree. She was hanging on the first big
6
about ten feet below me. Tammy’s mother also
7
us at the exact time my dad did. About that time a huge gust of wind came over the tree and I could feel the tree begin to sway. I remembered my dad’s
8
over the wind yelling, “Bart,
9
on tightly.” So I did.
The next thing I know, I heard Tammy
10
at the top of her lungs,
11
flat on the ground. She had fallen out of the tree.
I came down the tree to
12
. My dad later told me why Tammy fell and I didn’t.
13
, when Tammy’s mother felt the wind, she yelled out, “Tammy, don’t
14
!” And Tammy did do that.
My dad then
15
to me that the mind has a very
16
time dealing with a negative image. In order to deal with the
17
of not falling, Tammy’s brain had to first imagine falling, and then tell the brain not to do what it just imagined. However, my eight-year-old brain
18
had an internal image of hanging on tightly.
This “Self-Talk” is especially useful when you are
19
to break a habit or set a goal. You can’t imagine not doing something in your mind. The only way to accomplish it is to find a word for what you want to do.
I’m now a pretty good football player, because all my internal dialogue is
20
and encourages me to win. All this I owe to my dad.

There are about fifteen hundred languages in the world. But

a few of them are very
2
English is one of these. Many, many people use it, not only in England and the U.S.A., but in other parts of the world. About 200,000,000 speak it as their own language. It is difficult to say how many people are learning it as a
3
language. Many millions are
4
to do so. Is it easy or difficult to learn English? Different people may have different

Have you ever

9
the first day your

11
quite like this.
The only language that seems easy to learn is the mother tongue. We should

that we all learned our own language well when we were

what a small child does. He listens to what people say. He tries what he hears. When he is using the language, talking in it,

So it is
17
to say that learning English is easy, because a good command of English

much time. Good teachers, records, tapes, books, and dictionaries will

I was reading a notice at the entrance to my college dormitory, when a girl came up to me and said, “Do you
1
a quarter? I’m one short of putting my laundry(刚洗好的衣物) in the dryer(烘干机). ”
I
2
to think about it for a few seconds and considered whether I’d be
3
to give a quarter away. I found myself
4
her, thinking about why she didn’t
5
four quarters down from her room with her, as if she had
6
to be one short so she could ask someone else for it. (Later I knew
7
that was not the case.)
But I didn’t have any reason to
8
her. Then I responded, “Yeah, I think I have the only one,” though fully
9
that I had three. “Here you go,” I said with a smile. “Thanks,” she responded,
10
that she could have clean clothes to wear the next morning.
A few moments later the girl
11
and gave a dollar bill to me. “Why are you giving this to me?” I asked,
12
. “Oh, because you were kind to me, so I’m just giving back the
13
.”
It’s just a dollar, but I felt it was
14
. More so because I hadn’t given that quarter with such nice
15
, the way she gave that dollar to me. I felt like it was the first time I ever
16
something greater in return for something so
17
that I had given. I saw the power of kindness and generosity in a
18
way.
I thought it was so worth giving that quarter away. Giving and
19
don’t usually happen hand-in-hand,
20
when it does, like it did this time, it makes one think about why generosity is so powerful in the first place.

My husband and I sat outside. A small child about three came up the street, accompanied by her mother. As she saw another girl a few feet away, she gave her admiring comment, “Mommy, I like her dress.” Her mom

The mom and daughter started to
12
down the street,
13
the encounter (邂逅) had ended. Moments later, the “spinning dress girl” reappeared, shoes in hand,
14
her new friend who had seemingly disappeared. Now, an elderly couple, seated on a bench, had obviously been

of all this. The man
16
the child, saying, “There’s someone coming behind you.” Then we saw one showed and the other

the beautiful shoes.
If you can make a
18
better, do it. I have no idea how many others that evening might have
19
this act, hoping to help good things to happen. But such brief moments,
20
together, make up what might very well be the important times in our lives.

About five years ago I began to study at a new school, when my family moved to Iowa. I was just a little
1
,wondering whether I could get on well with my classmates.
Lucy, a girl in my
2
, who I thought wasn’t ready to accept a
3
girl, didn’t like me from the start.
4
,I was pretty sure she hated me. When I asked her a question, I could
5
she thought I was a total fool.
My teacher made us
6
next to each other for the last term. Lucy was not happy. However, I kept
7
at her, though she rolled her eyes, and I kept telling her that she was beautiful.
Finally, Lucy let me
8
to her, even when her friends were around. She
9
telling me how beautiful I looked. I still remember the
10
time when she smiled at me and said that, and I smiled right back, saying
11
to her. One day Lucy invited me over to her house, and talked to me all the time
12
her other friends. That day Lucy , the girl who had hated me, called me her best deskmate. After that, we
13
friends for years.
I moved to Arizona later, but I will never
14
Lucy. I still remember she considered me her
15
at first. During that time it felt like I was
16
my time, and losing my dignity(尊严),but I still smiled at Lucy even when she
17
me. I’m not stupid; I didn’t think she was
18
in doing those things, but I still put up with it. And finally we became great friends.
Not long ago, I read the
19
of Abraham Lincoln, “Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?” I smiled, thinking of Lucy. It just
20
me how great a friend I used to have.

I believe in my mother. My belief began when I was just a kid, when I
1
becoming a doctor.
My mother was a
2
. Through her work, she observed that
3
people spent a lot more time
4
than they did watching television. She announced that my brother and I could only watch two to three
5
TV programs during the week. With our free time, we had to read two books each week from the Detroit Public Library and
6
written book reports to her. She would mark them up with check markers and underline the
7
parts. Years later we realized her marks were a
8
. My mother was illiterate(文盲). Although we had no money,
9
the covers of those books, I could go anywhere, do anything and be anybody.
When I entered high school, I was an A-student, but not for
10
. I wanted the fancy clothes. I wanted to hang about with the guys. I went from being an A-student to a B-student and to a C-student, but I didn’t
11
. I was cool.
One night my mother came home after her several jobs and I
12
about not having enough Italian knit shirts. She said, “Okay, I’11 give you the money I
13
this week by rubbing floors and cleaning bathrooms and you can buy the family food and pay the bills. With
14
left over, you can have all that you want.” I was very
15
with that arrangement. But once I got through
16
money, there was nothing left. I realized my mother was a financial genius to be able to keep a(n)
17
over our heads and any kind of food on the table. I was also
18
that immediate satisfaction wasn’t going to get me anywhere. Success
19
intellectual(知识上的) preparation. I went back to my studies and became an A-student again, and
20
I realized my dream and I became a doctor.
