Last year, I lost my best friend in high school. It seemed that everyone else’s life could just continue on in its
1
way, but mine couldn’t. I wasn’t sure how I was going to be able to face
2
and their gossip at school. I was forced to
3
my routine on Monday morning as usual. In the evening I returned home from school
4
completely defeated. All I wanted to do was
5
into bed and wallow(沉迷于)in my own self-pity. I pulled back the covers on my bed and
6
(n)
7
that it was to be opened on a
8
night that week.
I made it through that week
9
my father. Each card
10
to say just what I needed to hear. Tuesday’s card said, “The past is painful to think about and the
11
is impossible to imagine. Don’t try. Just take it one minute at a time.” On Wednesday my mood
12
when I read, “What you are feeling now is
13
and normal. It still feels very bad, but it is part of the healing
14
.” Friday’s card contained a poem he wrote. The last lines made me smile through my tears. “Whatever special
15
you face along life’s way, may you
16
that you will find the best in every day.” I was instructed to open the last card
17
the party I went to on Saturday night. In it he wisely reminded me to
18
. “The world isn’t so bad after a good laugh. The more you laugh, the more you heal.” Each card was signed, “Love, Dad.”
My world once collapsed but I
19
the difficult breakup eventually. It owed to my dad , who made his
20
known when he couldn’t be present.

Eighty-year-old retired tailor, James McKay, spent Saturday night in jail after
1
thirty-year-old Keith Smith over the head
2
his walking stick.McKay’s wife, Laurence told us that while McKay is usually a
3
person, he had been
4
to this act of violence by getting wet just once too often.
Smith lives above the McKays and it appears that not only is he a keen gardener, he is also a
5
collector.Unfortunately for him, the water he sent over his balcony every day ended up on the McKay’s, or too often, on the McKays
6
.
“For the last fortnight, since Smith moved into the flat above us, we have hardly dared to go to our
7
,” said Laurene. She added that it wasn’t so much the water falling onto their balcony from Smith watering his plant
8
bothered them, it was more the way he cleaned his fish tanks.“We’d be
9
there happily reading our newspapers, when
10
so much water would come from above that we’d be as wet as if we’d
11
with our clothes on! Neither could we get rid of the
12
of fish!”
And on Saturday evening it was just too
13
.“It was James’s birthday,” explained Laurene, “and I’d made him a birthday cake. The candles were a great sight as you can imagine, but James didn’t get to blow them out.”
14
, Smith emptied one of his larger tanks over his balcony and both the McKays and the cake were wet
15
.Rarely had Laurene seen McKay move so fast.“I couldn’t
16
him.He was up there in a flash. It was the fastest I’d seen him move since 1964.”
Smith is not going to take things further with the police. He has also promised to change his
17
from now on.And what of James McKay?
18
he left the police station, a large crowd of supporters sang him, “Happy Birthday”.“
19
the most exciting birthday
20
!” said the cheerful old man.“The best since my adolescence I’d say!”

Joseph Henry was an American scientist who served as the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. He used to tell a rather
1
story about his childhood. His grandmother, who
2
him, once paid a cobbler(修鞋匠)to make him a pair of
3
.
The man measured his
4
and told Joseph that he could choose between two
5
: a rounded toe or a square toe. Little Joseph couldn’t
6
. It seemed to be such a huge decision;
7
, it would become his only pair of shoes for a long time.
The cobbler
8
him to take a couple of days to make up his
9
. Day after day, Joseph went into the shop, sometimes three or four times a
10
! Each time he looked over the cobbler’s shoes and tried to decide. The round-toed shoes were
11
, but the square toes looked more
12
. He continued to put off his decision. He wanted to make up his mind, but he just couldn’t decide!
Finally, one day he went into the
13
and the cobbler handed him a parcel
14
in brown paper. His new shoes! He raced home. He
15
off the wrapping and found a beautiful pair of leather shoes, one with a rounded toe and the other with a
16
toe.
I learn a
17
here about decisions: If I don’t make decisions myself, others will
18
make them for me. Better than I make them myself.
And if I choose
19
from time to time, that’s okay, too. At least I won’t have to
20
shoes that don’t match. Besides, I’11 probably do better the next time.

I take the train to work every morning from a train station near my house. I can get to the station quite
1
because there’s a short cut(捷径)to the station. But in the summer, it can get quite smelly because of all the
2
. So I always try to
3
through it. Today I was trying to do so as usual
4
something made me stop for a moment. I saw the most beautiful
5
by an old woman walking in front of me with the help of a white
6
.
She was short and
7
and had white hair. She was walking
8
as each step took some effort. I hadn’t specially noticed her
9
, until she stopped near a rubbish bin(垃圾箱).
She slowly placed her walking stick
10
the rubbish bin. Then she leaned (斜倚着) on it with her right hand. She bent down and
11
the rubbish. She clearly found it
12
and it took her a while. She
13
some rubbish with her left hand and slowly straightened herself up again. All the while she used the rubbish bin to
14
herself. She threw the rubbish inside the bin and then
15
walking. It all took her great effort.
There’s no much rubbish and no one ever does
16
about it. I was moved to
17
this old woman make such a great effort to keep even a small part of it
18
! I haven’t been able to
19
thinking about that all day.
I want to follow her example. I’ve decided to pick up rubbish of the
20
if I meet from now on. I hope people will do the same as I do.

Positive Thought—A Strong Tool of Success
Once upon a time there was a bunch of tiny frogs that arranged a running competition. The
1
was to reach the top of a very high tower. A big crowd had
2
around the tower to see the race and
3
on the competitors.
The race began. Honestly, no one in the crowd really
4
that the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower. You heard
5
such as, “They will
6
make it to the top. Or: Not a chance that they will
7
. The tower is too high!”
The tiny frogs began falling,
8
, except for those, who in fresh tempo (速度) were climbing higher and higher. The crowd
9
to yell (大叫), “It’s too difficult!!! No one will make
10
!” More tiny frogs got tired and gave up, but one continued higher and higher and higher. This one wouldn’t give up!
At the end,
11
else had given up
12
the tower, except for one tiny frog. After a big
13
, he was the only one who reached the top! Then all the other tiny frogs
14
wanted to know how this frog
15
to do it.
A competitor asked the tiny frog
16
he had found the
17
to succeed and reach the goal. It turned out…that the winner was
18
!!!!

dreams and wishes away from you—the ones you have in your heart! You should always be positive and above all be deaf when people tell you that you cannot fulfill your dreams!

We took the bus from the suburb every early morning that summer 3 years ago. One of the passengers was a small
1
man who took the bus to the centre for senior citizens every morning. He walked with a stoop (佝偻) and a sad look on his face when he, with some difficulty,
2
the bus and sat down alone behind the driver. No one ever paid very much attention to him.
Then one
3
morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled before he sat down. The driver
4
guardedly. The rest of us were silent. The next day, the old man boarded the bus energetically,
5
and said in a loud voice: “And a very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good morning,”
6
. The following weeks we were more alert (留意的). Our friend was now dressed in a nice old suit and a wide out-of-date
7
. The thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we
8
began to nod and talk to each other.
One morning he had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver
9
smilingly and asked:“Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie?”and he nodded shyly and said yes. The other passengers
10
and clapped at him. Charlie bowed and waved the
11
before he sat down on his seat. Every morning after that Charlie always brought a flower. Some of the
12
passengers began bringing him flowers for his bouquet(花束).
The summer went by, and
13
was closing in, when one morning Charlie wasn't waiting at his usual
14
. When he wasn't there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or —
15
— on holiday somewhere.
One day, we learned from the staff working in the centre for senior citizens that the elderly
16
was fine, but he hadn't been coming to the
17
that week. One of his very close friends had died at the weekend. They
18
him back on Monday. How silent we were the rest of the way to work.
The next
19
Charlie was waiting at the stop, stooping a bit more, a little bit more grey, and without a tie. He seemed to have shrinked(缩小)again. Inside the bus was a
20
. All of us sat with our eyes filled with tears and a bunch of wild flowers in our hands.

To my family and friends,
I have just started my tour of the area badly affected by the war.Everything is going really well, so no
1
.The land is beautiful but unfortunately it has a lot of
2
too.Let me
3
.
Last week, 120 school girls were
4
by a gas leak(泄漏).Most have recovered but six are still in
5
.Even though the local government speaks about the
6
of education, most of the kids here only attend school for four hours a day if they are lucky. They are so excited and
7
to learn, but then have to
8
things like being attacked. Most of these kids are
9
and can’t afford a pencil or even paper. So I’m planning a trip to several schools to talk about
10
and to give these kids some of the
11
they need. That is where all of you can help.If you can
12
whateverschool supplies you have available, that would be
13
appreciated.
I know how busy you are so thank you for taking the
14
to do this and I will post pictures of this

after I return.
Thank you again.

Before her 21-year-old daughter died in an accident in early 2007, Pam Weiss had never logged on to Facebook, a social-networking site. At that time, social-networking sites were used almost only by

. But she knew her daughter Amy Woolington, a UCLA student, had a(n)

Like a growing number of sad relatives, Weiss tapped into one of the most powerful treasures of memories available: a loved one’s online presence. As people spend more time at

, there’s less being stored away in dusty attics(阁楼).These pieces of our lives that we put online can feel as eternal as the Internet itself, but what happens to our
9
identity after we die?
Facebook

its policy a few months after Woolington died. “We first realized we needed a protocol(协定书) for
11
users after the Virginia Tech University shooting, when students were looking for ways to remember and
12
their classmates,” says Facebook spokeswoman Elizabeth Linder.

Never Miss The Chance
Each spring brings a new blossom of wildflowers in the ditches along the highway I travel
1
to work.
There is one particular blue flower that has always caught my eye. I've noticed that it blooms only in the
2
hours, the afternoon sun is too warm for it. Every day for approximately two weeks, I see those beautiful flowers.
This spring, I
3
a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the kitchen window while
4
the dishes and see the flowers. I've
5
thought that those lovely blue flowers from the ditch would look
6
in that bed alongside other wildflowers. Every day I drove past the flowers
7
, "I'11 stop on my way home and dig them." "Gee, I don't want to get my good clothes dirty..."
8
the reason, I never stopped to dig them. My husband even gave me a folding shovel one year for my trunk to be used for that
9
purpose.
One day on my way home from work, I
10
to see that the highway department had mowed the ditches and the pretty blue flowers were
11
. I thought to myself, "Way to go, you waited too long. You should have done it when you first saw them
12
this spring."
A week ago we were
13
and saddened to learn that my oldest sister-in-law has a terminal brain tumor. She is 20 years older than my husband and
14
, because of age and distance, we haven't been as
15
as we all would have liked. I couldn't help but
16
the connection between the pretty blue flowers and the
17
between my husband's sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time
18
to plant some wonderful
19
that will bloom every year for us.
And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I'11 stop and
20
them to my wildflower garden.

Most people who work in London get a break of about an hour for lunch.
1
they mostly live too far from home to go back there
2
lunch, they have to
3
other arrangements for their midday meal.
Many large companies have a canteen (自助食堂) for their employees. In
4
canteens the food served is simple but
5
, and there is some
6
of choice. But the number of dishes
7
usually small. The employees themselves fetch their dishes
8
a counter at which they are
9
. There they can find a tray on
10
to carry their knives, forks, spoons, plates, cups, saucers,
11
, of course, their food. A meal in a canteen is inexpensive and may
12
of soup, fish and chips or meat and two vegetables,
13
fruit or pudding of some
14
as dessert. Some companies that do not run a canteen
15
their staff with luncheon-vouchers (午餐券), which many restaurants will accept in
16
of money.
As there are so many people
17
work in London, there are numerous cafes and restaurants in every area that is not purely residential. A meal
18
cost anything from a modest sum to quite a few pounds,
19
on the restaurant and the food chosen.
20
, one can generally get a meal, or at least a snack, in a pub. In recent years there has also been a big increase in the number of ‘take-away’ food shops of all kinds.
