Better urban life
For many young people, the dream of a lifetime is to travel the world, explore different cultures and landscapes, taste new foods and flavors(口味), and listen to the distinctive sounds of international music and languages. Unfortunately,
1
young people have the money or freedom to make this dream come true.
2
if you can’t go out into the world, surely
3
best is to let the world come to you. And this year’s Shanghai World Expo is exactly
4
that’s happening.
From May 1 to October 31, there will be 194
5
and 50 international organizations on display at the 5-square-km Expo site. Seventy million domestic and international visitors are
6
to visit it by the end October. So, if you can go, you’11 be
7
by people with a wide range of backgrounds, nations, and cultures. You may find that you can learn
8
much from striking up a conversation with a
9
as you can at an exhibition or performance.
The Expo’s theme(主题) is “Better City, Better Life”. The United Nations estimates(估计) that, this year, 55 percent of the people will live in city
10
. This causes a dilemma for the world’s
11
: How can they accommodate such a large number of people in a
12
way? Can they remain places of natural beauty and cultural importance? Young people will have the opportunity to take part in forums to discuss themes
13
new technology, green energy and conservation etc.
A trip to the Expo is guaranteed to be much less
14
than a trip around the world. Still, the costs can
15
. However, young people can save money by purchasing group or student tickets, which may be available at
16
rates. Many of the participating pavilions(参展场馆) offer free sample and treats for the visitors.
17
handing out free chocolates, the Belgian pavilion will
18
a free diamond each week to a visitor who can answer questions related to Belgium.
If you’re planning to head to the Shanghai Expo between May and October, don’t forget to
19
a camera, a notebook, and an open mind. For nearly 6 months, representatives of the world are coming together to
20
their best and latest ideas for the future. It’s certain to be a memorable experience.

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried
1
for hours as the farmer tried to think out
2
to do. Finally, he decided the animal was
3
, and the well needed to be
4
up anyway; it just wasn’t
5
it to save the donkey. He invited all his
6
to come over and help him. They all grabbed(握起)a shovel(铁锹)and began to shovel
7
into the well. At first, the donkey
8
what was happening and cried horribly(惊恐的,害怕的). Then, to everyone’s
9
he quieted down.
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked
10
the well. He was surprised at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. As the farmer’s neighbours
11
to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would
12
it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily ran off!
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. If you want to get out of the well, the
13
is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone(垫脚石). We can get out of the
14
wells just by not stopping, never
15
! Shake it off and take a step up.

You must know the “ding dong ditch”. Person A rings Person B’s doorbell, and then quickly runs away or hides before Person B answers. Person B hurries to answer the door, only to find that no one’s there. After the
1
thing is repeated several times, this is called “ding dong ditch”.
Sharon Mardis, a single mother of four, told ABC News that she
2
a “ding dong ditch” when she
3
to her door at 1:00 am last night.
“My doorbell started ringing,
4
I came to the door,” Sharon told ABC News. “There was
5
at the door. I went back in the house. I got ten or twenty
6
and the doorbell started ringing again. I came back to the door, still nobody at the door.” She got
7
and stepped outside, shouting, “Who’s that? What on earth are you going to do?” There was just
8
.
But after Sharon returned to the house, she
9
something. Smoke! Sharon quickly
10
her kids and the family pets and ran out of the house. Only then did she
11
how bad the fire was. The
12
of the house fell down; the house was quickly
13
by flames. The smoke detectors(探测器) had never
14
: they were out of batteries. Good thing for the doorbell.
The
15
is who had rung it.
16
found that the flames has fused(熔化) the wires of the doorbell together, causing it to ring. But
17
, the fire had nothing to do with the doorbell wiring at all. It had started in the bathroom, well down the hall. From there, the flames didn’t spread to the nearby
18
, where the children and Sharon were sleeping.
19
, they surprisingly reached the doorbell first, making it ring repeatedly, and
20
Sharon to avoid danger.
Sharon believes it happened that way thanks to an angel.

What can you do to make sure your car isn't stolen? Well, first and most obviously,
1
the car when you leave it. That includes locking the boot for luggage and closing all the windows. Even a
2
break allows a thief to insert a wire to force open the lock button. Of course, don't leave the keys hanging in the ignition (点火器). And don't hide a
3
key inside or outside the car — thieves know all the hiding places. If your car
4
, lock up before you go for help.
5
you can't start the car, a thief may be able to.
Now since dusk to mid-evening are the
6
hours for car thieves, make sure you park in a
7
area, where there are plenty of passers-by,
8
, near a busy store or a restaurant. Avoid leaving your keys with a garage or parking-lot assistant: choose the place you park
9
.
Keep your driver's license in your wallet or purse,
10
in some small separate divisions of your car. You should also have a record of your car's
11
statistics both in your wallet and
12
at home. This can help with recovery
13
stealing.
And finally, it's a good idea to
14
some kind of safety equipment. There is a
15
available from alarm systems that set off a siren (警报) if an
16
is made to force open the car
17
any way, to fuel shut-off systems and time delay ignition systems. A warning sign will also help
18
would-be thieves. They don't want to waste time on trying to steal a
19
car.
So, help yourself put car thieves out of
20
by always locking your car, fixing anti-stealing systems and co-operating with the police by reporting any attempt at stealing.

When I was young, my grandmother used to tell me stories. I’d like to
1
with you one of my favorites.
Once, there was a young boy. He was very
2
because he couldn’t keep his friends. He asked his father
3
this was so. His father
4
replied, “Son, each time you say or do something that
5
one of your friends, hammer a piece of wood into the
6
.” The curious boy did
7
he was told and soon he made fence(篱笆) out of the wood.
“Father!” he cried, “I can’t get out! I am blocked by this fence!”
“Well, Son, each time you say something
8
to a friend, you can take one piece of wood out.”
The boy
9
this, too. On the first day he took out one piece of wood and on the second day he took out
10
two. On the third day he took out
11
more. Finally he had
12
all of the wood. “But Father!” he cried again, “Look at the
13
in the ground! They are big and dark! Oh, how ugly!”
“Son,” his father said, “this is why you aren’t able to
14
your friends. Remember: when you hurt someone’s feeling, no matter what you do to
15
for it, there will always be a scar(伤痕) in his
16
.”
From that day on, the boy was very
17
of his words and actions and he
18
hurt his friends’ feelings again.
I always keep this story close to my heart. It has
19
me lot. I am always careful not to hurt any of my friends because they are people that I wouldn’t want to

I once had a friend who grew to be close to me. Once when we were sitting on the edge of a swimming pool, she
1
the palm (手掌) of her hand with some water and
2
it before me, saying, “You see the water
3
contained in my hand? It stands for love.”
This was how I saw it:
4
you keep your hand carefully open and allow it to
5
there, it will always be there. However, if you
6
to close your fingers round it and try to
7
it, it will spill through the first cracks(缝隙) it
8
.
Now I see this is the biggest
9
that people make when they meet
10
…they try to possess(拥有,占用) it, they demand, they
11
…and just like the water spilling out of your hand, love will
12
from you. For love is meant to be free, you cannot
13
its nature even in your lifetime. If there are people you love, allow them to be
14
beings.
Give, but don’t expect. Advise, but don’t
15
. Ask, but never demand.
It might sound
16
, but it is a lesson that may take a lifetime to
17
. It is the secret to true love. To truly practice it, you must sincerely feel
18
expectations from those who you love.
If you love something, set it free; if it
19
, it’s yours; if it doesn’t, it
20
was.

I moved to a new neighborhood two months ago. In the house with a large
1
across the road lived a taxi driver, a single parent with two school-age children. At the end of the day, he would
2
his taxi on the road. I
3
why he did not park it in the garage.
Then, one day I learnt that he had another car in his garage. In the afternoon he would come home
4
work, leave his taxi and go out for his
5
affairs in his other car, not in his taxi. I felt it was
6
.
I was curious to see his personal car but did not make it until I
7
to be outside one evening two weeks
8
, when the garage door was
9
and he drove out in his “own” car: a Rolls-Royce(劳斯莱斯)! It shook me completely
10
I realized what that meant. You see, he was a taxi driver. But
11
inside, he saw himself as something else: a Rolls-Royce owner and a(n)
12
. He drove others in his taxi but himself and his children in his Rolls-Royce. The world looked at his taxi and
13
him a taxi driver. But for him, a taxi was just something he drove for a living. Rolls-Royce was something he drove for a(n)
14
.
We go to bed every night and
15
every morning as parents or children, not as bankers, CEOs or professors. We go for a

. We love life as it is. Yet often, we base our entire happiness and success on how high we
18
the social ladder(阶梯)—how much bigger and better a
19
we have. And we ignore(忽视)our Rolls-Royce, by keeping it dusty in our garage. We should focus more on
20
we are than what we do!

Whohasdeprivedthechildren'shappinessoflearning???
Children are born with a natural desire of learning. They are curios and concerned about
1
around them. They are
2
to learn anything that amazes them. They have so many
3
that they keep on asking. They can bore the
4
all day long with many
5
questions which they will never feel bored with. Why? This is because learning is their
6
, perhaps an instinct of human beings. They just can't help. But
7
, they feel bored with learning, especially when learning becomes a boring
8
for them, especially after school has become a
9
of their life, especially when they have to
10
teachers who tell them again and again to
11
to recite and memorize things they don't want to learn, and especially
12
they realize school is not what they once
13
to be but something that, according to their parents, they must rely on in order to
14
a good fame or a good job or a good future. That is to say, learning has become a
15
, which they are forced or
16
to face. So it is the teachers and parents who have thrown the heavy
17
on the children. And meanwhile, the competitive society is also to blame. The children have been
18
of their pleasure and happiness that they could have enjoyed from the natural learning.
Therefore, my
19
to the students’ learning is that they
20
enjoy learning, enjoy the pleasure that they could feel from learning itself. Find back the long lost desire and curiosity of learning in their childhood.

It was finally time for her to take the examinations yesterday. Miss Lovely didn’t come to work. We

“Of course I’d run over the dog ,sir”, Miss Lovely answered without

.
“I’m sorry to tell you, Miss Lovely,”the examiner shook his
17
and said ,“you have to take the examination again!”
“I don’t think my answers were

,sir”the girl said in a hurry.“I

run over a man, you know!”
“Iagree with your

, Miss Lovely,”the chief examiner said with a smile,“but why not brake(刹车)?”

It’s fourteen years since I left the Philippines to live with my family in the USA.A month ago, while on summer vacation back in my motherland,I learned a lesson from mosquito(蚊子) bites.Right before
1
Kennedy Airport in New York,my grandma
2
me of the behavior of the native mosquitoes around the
3
like me.She said,“There’s an old saying—the
4
you stay away from the motherland, the sweeter your blood
5
to the mosquitoes.”Not
6
it,I replied,“Grandmaaaa, that’s just an old wives’ tale!”
Well,less than a week
7
my arrival in Manila,I was already carpeted with a
8
of mosquito bites.I took many measures to keep myself from being
9
,but they all proved useless.
Late one
10
in my cousin’s home,I couldn’t bear the
11
of the bites.Hoping to find some comfort,I
12
my cousin, who was sleeping peacefully in the bed next to mine.Unhappy for being
13
she said,“There is nothing you can do.Go back to sleep.”With a few turns, she slept again.Enviously(妒忌地)
14
her sleep,I hoped a big mosquito would
15
on her face. However, the mosquitoes would just lightly dance around her forehead and fly away quickly, never biting her.Amazed(惊奇的),I ran to others’
16
,only to find they were all sleeping
17
as the same thing occurred again and again.
From those bites,I came to
18
my grandma’s silly tale. From then on,I’ve always tried to keep a(n)
19
mind about those strange old wives’ tales
20
they do have some truth to them.
