Robeson was born in a very poor family. At seven, he had to pick coal in a deserted mine near his home, and then he sold
1
he had picked and earned a few coins to help his parents. He had
2
schooling, for being so poor, how could they
3
school fees?
When he was fifteen, he worked
4
a servant in a school. Looking at other children studying in the classroom, he felt
5
for himself. How he
6
to have the same chance! He decided to study by
7
.In the daytime, after the sweeping and cleaning was over, he
8
stand by the window outside the classroom trying to catch what the teacher said. At night, he tried his best to remember what he had
9
during the day. He worked
10
hard at his lessons that he sometimes had just three or four hours to sleep. The more he learned the greater
11
he showed in his lessons. A maths teacher discovered him and came to like this diligent boy and
12
him to sit at the back of the class. In one exam, he was the
13
one in the whole school who reached the highest grade. He would have been given the scholarship if he
14
a regular student of the school.
Robeson
15
rough six long years with his study of maths and wrote several articles which captured the
16
of some university professors. They admired his talent
17
his diligence. To give him a good chance, they hired him as a librarian and
18
him free guidance. Robeson felt
19
,for he was sure that before him there was a broad road
20
success.

Last Christmas while staying with my parents, I
1
across some old love letters that my parents wrote to
each other. these letters were all piled up in a basket, dirty and
2
with dust.
3
to read and sort them, I asked
them if I could take the letters back to my Illinois home. They agreed.
As I carefully opened each letter, all of them
4
with age, I discovered a new page
5
unknown to me in
this private chapter of my parents’ lives.
My father used to
6
in the army. So his letters were full of frontline(前线)
7
of the things about the war.
Each of my mother’s letters was marked with her 1944 dark red lipstick(口红) kiss. I was
8
to these letters
like a magnet(磁铁).
Just six weeks after our Christmas visit, Daddy became very
9
and was hospitalized(住院). This time, he
was fighting a
10
kind of war. As I sat by his bedside, we discussed the
11
. He told me how much receiving
those lipstick-kissed letters had
12
to him when he had been so far from home.
It so happened that the next day would be February 14. From the
13
letters I chose the card my father had
sent mother in 1944 and brought it to my father’s bedside.
At his bedside, I joked with him, saying
14
.“Today is Valentine’s Day, don’t you want to sent Mother a
present?” He became more
15
when I handed him the old
16
. He carefully opened it and took out the card,
and when he
17
it, his eyes were filled with tears.
My father, in a voice tight with
18
read the loving
19
he’d sent to my mother fifty-six years earlier. And
this time, he could read it to her

As I walked home one freezing day, I stumbled(绊脚) on a wallet in the street. I picked it up and looked inside to find some
1
so that I could call the owner. But the wallet
2
only three dollars and a letter, which looked as if it had been in there for years. The envelope was
3
and the only thing on it was the return address. I started to open the letter,
4
to find some clue. Then I saw the dateline-1924. The letter had been written almost sixty years earlier! It was written in a beautiful handwriting, on blue paper with a little flower in the left-hand corner. It was a “Dear John”(绝交) letter that told the
5
, Michael, that the writer could not see him any more because her mother
6
it. Even so, she wrote that she would
7
love him. It was signed Hannah.
It was a beautiful letter, but there was no
8
, except for the name Michael, to identify the owner.
9
if I called the information center, the operator could find a phone listing for the address on the envelope. Actually, I took great
10
to find both Hannah and Michael, who still remained single. Then, after sixty years’ separation, they married each other in their late seventies. And I was invited to be their best man!

On August 26, 1999, New York City experienced a torrential downpour. The rain caused the streets to
1
and the subway system almost came to a stop.
Unfortunately, this happened during the morning rush hour. Many people who were going to work were
2
to go home. Some battled to
3
a taxi or to get on a bus. Still others faced the
4
bravely, walking miles to get to work.
I
5
to be one of the people on the way to work that morning. I went from subway line to subway line only to find that most
6
had stopped. After making my way
7
crowds of people, I finally found a subway line that was
8
. Unfortunately, there were so many people waiting to
9
the subway that I could not even get down the stairs to the
10
. So I took the train going in the opposite direction, and then switch back to the downtown train. Finally, after what seemed like an forever journey, the train
11
my stop. Then I had to walk several blocks in the increasingly heavy rain. When I finally got to my office, I was
12
through, exhausted and
13
.
My co-workers and I spent most of the day drying off. When it was 5:00 pm,I was ready to go home. I was about to turn off my computer
14
I received an email from Garth, my Director:
I would like to thank all of you who made the effort and
15
reported to work. It is always reassuring(令人欣慰), at times like these, when employees so clearly show their
16
to their jobs. Thank you.
Garth’s email was short, but I learned more from that
17
message than I ever did from a textbook. The email taught me that a few words of
18
can make a big difference. The rainstorm and the traffic
19
had made me tired and upset. But Garth’s words immediately
20
me and put a smile back on my face.

We often talk about ourselves as if we have permanent genetic defects (缺陷) that can never be changed.“I’m impatient.” “I’m always behind.” “I always put things
1
!” You’ve surely heard them.Maybe you’ve used them to describe
2
.
These comments may come from stories about us that have been
3
for years—often from
4
childhood.These stories may have no
5
.But they can set low expectations for us.As a child, my mother said to me, “Marshall, you have no mechanical (操作机械的) skills, and you will never have any mechanical skills for the rest of your life.” How did these expectations
6
my development? I was never
7
to work on cars or be around
8
.When I was 18, I took the US Army’s Mechanical Aptitude Test.My scores were in the bottom for the entire nation!
Six years later,
9
, I was at California University, working on my doctor’s degree. One of my professors, Dr.Bob Tannbaum, asked me to write down things I did well and things I couldn’t do.On the positive side, I
10
down, “research, writing, analysis, and speaking.” On the
11
side, I wrote, “I have no mechanical skills.”
Bob asked me how I knew I had no mechanical skills.I explained my life
12
and told him about my
13
performance on the Army test.Bob then asked, “
14
is it that you can solve
15
mathematical problems, but you can’t solve simple mechanical problems?”
Suddenly I realized that I didn’t
16
from some sort of genetic defect.I was just living out expectations that I had chosen to
17
.At that point, it wasn’t just my family and friends who had been
18
my belief that I was mechanically hopeless. And it wasn’t just the Army test, either.I was the one who kept telling myself, “You can’t do this!” I realized that as long as I kept saying that, it was going to remain true.
19
, if we don’t treat ourselves as if we have incurable genetic defects, we can do well in almost
20
we choose.

The telephone rang in the police station at Richmond, California , USA.
“Police station? A train for Santa Fe hit a truck at the McDonald Street Crossing. Please
1
there at once. With an ambulance, too. A man is badly

.” said an anxious voice of a young woman. “ And you know I am the ….”
“Please wait! Hi! Hi!” the policeman kept on

though the line was cut off. Within a minute , a police car and an ambulance car started off. Before long they got to the crossing, but they
4
everything was fine. No accident, no wounded man.
“What a dirty trick!” said the policeman

. “ We must find out that bad

when they heard the whistle of a train which was nearing them quickly. All of a sudden, a truck appeared. It came

towards them, too. When the truck was passing the crossing, it suddenly
9
to move on. Right then and there, before the eyes of all the policemen
10
, the train hit the truck heavily and
11
it dozens of meters away.
When Randolph Bruce, the driver, was
12
out of the damaged truck, he was seriously wounded just as the young woman had told on the phone. As he was taken to the

Later the police did whatever they could to

the woman who had telephoned them. It turned out that the woman was a very excellent police officer working far in the neighboring state, who had got the first-hand
15
of this crime as described above.

He met her at a party. She was outstanding; many guys were
1
her, but nobody paid any attention to him. After the party, he
2
her for coffee. She was
3
. In order not to appear rude, she went
4
.
As they sat in a nice

shop, he was too nervous to say anything and she felt
6
.
Suddenly, he asked the waiter, “Could you please give me some
7
? I’d like to put it in my coffee.”
They stared at him. He turned red; but when the salt came, he put it in his coffee and drank.
8
, she asked. “Why salt with coffee?” He explained, “When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea, I liked playing on the sea… I could
9
its salty taste, like salty coffee. Now every time I drink it, I
10
my childhood and my hometown. I miss
11
and my parents, who are still there.”
She was
12
touched. A man who can admit that he’s homesick must love his home and care about his family. He must be
13
.
So they dated,
14
and lived happily together. And every time she made coffee for him, she would put in some salt, the way he liked it.
After 40 years, he
15
and left her a letter which said:
My dearest, please
16
my life-long lie. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous that I asked for salt
17
sugar.
Sweetheart, I don’t exactly like salty coffee. But as it mattered so
18
to you, I’ve
19
to enjoy it. Having you with me was my greatest happiness. If I could live a second time, I hope we can be together again,
20
, it means that I have to drink salty coffee for the rest of my life.

Have you ever tried to draw a straight line, only to find it turns out all wrong? Or, have you ever wanted to show
1
at a party and found the song you’d practiced so many times suddenly
2
more difficult? I’ve had both these
3
. As a senior student, I have to
4
many exams. Each time, I think, “ I
5
fail this time,’’ but I get a low mark. Don’t be surprised---it’s not
6
I don’t try, do enough preparation,
7
take it seriously. On the contrary, it is because I give it too
8
attention. The thought “ I must pass” makes me taste the terrible flavor of failure.
I often
9
to my friends, “ Don’t be too hard
10
yourself.” However, when I
11
my own goals, I do not listen to my own advice. So why not
12
this crazy thought of achieving the best? Just face the problem
13
before you with a calm mind, work and you will succeed.
In my opinion,
14
a calm state of mind is a skill for life. People
15
want to succeed realizing this is of
16
importance. So
17
time you’re trying to draw a straight line or
18
a performance, tell yourself, “ If I can just do it
19
than last time, it’s a success.” Keep a calm state of mind, and you will be happy
20
you succeed or fail.

About once a month I have to go to Bedford for my work. One day I went into a
1
there to have something to
2
. The waiter took my coat and put it in a small room.
About an hour later I was
3
to go. The waiter
4
me my coat. Something fell out of the pocket onto the floor. It was a small white box. I took a
5
look at the
6
. “Oh, you’ve brought
7
coat,” I said to the waiter. “It looks very much like mine,
8
it is quite new, and this isn’t my box, either.”
“Oh, then I
9
someone has taken your coat and left his,” said the waiter. “This kind of thing
10
sometimes.”
I opened the box. There was a beautiful gold
11
in it. The waiter and I
12
to go to the police station.
“Has anyone lost a ring?” I asked at the station.
“Yes,” said a policeman. “A young man who came in this morning lost a ring, he lost it in London.”
He
13
the young man. A few minutes later, the man arrived.
“Yes, this is my ring,” he said. “How can I
14
you, sir? You see, I paid a lot of money for this ring and
15
I lost it on the train!”
After I told him the
16
of the coat, he said, “You haven’t been on the train. I haven’t been in the hotel, so how did my ring
17
in the coat?”
“Did anyone sit or stand next to you on the train?” asked the policeman.
“Yes,” said the young man. “But I don’t remember his face.”
“You may remember this
18
,” said the policeman. “Was it like this one?”
“Yes, it was,” said the young man. “But my friend here isn’t the thief.”
The policeman laughed. “No,” he said. “The thief on the train stole your ring, and
19
our friend here, he went into the hotel to get some food. Only he didn’t take the
20
coat away with him.”
