Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
The world was sharply separated into men and women, because that was the way we believed it should be. We hold this firm belief and made efforts to keep this

with the differences between male and female excellence. Women are now confident to

the concepts as “male leadership” and “male power”, which are only terms invented by men and serve in men’s
10
.
Such remarkable change in people’s viewpoint may well explain the gradual
11
of single-sex schools. The aim of education is to stimulate imagination, encourage free thinking and keep alive various interests. But the single-sex school follows the same regulations and
12
a set of separate subjects for males or females. In single-sex schools, instead of being offered a rich expansion of experience, students have access to
13
knowledge. Such education harms individual freedom and kills the possibility for a young person to develop into a(n)
14
human. Furthermore, such sexual distinction is also dangerous as it breaks up the sense of community by
15
people into two sex groups, which eventually damages the development of human civilization.

We all know that some things are obviously right. For example, it is right to be
1
to other people. It is also right to look after the environment. Some things are
2
wrong, too. For instance, we should not hurt or bully(欺负) others, nor should we litter. Rules often tell us what is right or wrong.
Rules can help the public make the right
3
,and remain safe. Car drivers have to obey traffic regulations that tell them the right things to do on the road to avoid crashes. Cyclists who give signals before turning or stopping help prevent
4
.
If people follow rules without taking other matters into consideration, it will be
5
for them to form what is sometimes called a “black and white” view. For example, they may believe that people should always tell the truth, and that lying is
6
acceptable. Such people always stick to their views, even if it means that they may get into
7
.
Sometimes it may not be so easy to know
8
what is right or wrong. Some people choose not to eat meat because they believe that it is
9
to eat animals, but others argue that they can eat meat and
10
be kind to animals; some insist that stealing is always wrong, but others think that one does not need to feel to
11
when stealing some food to eat, if lives in a really poor area and he is
12
. Rules help us live together in harmony, because they show us the right way to
13
other. However, some people argue that rules may be

I dropped my 5-year-old daughter off at the day care centre(育儿中心) yesterday. There we saw one of her friends sitting at a table
1
, crying. She sometimes gets
2
when her mom leaves. My daughter often
3
with her, and they’re good friends. When we saw the little girl
4
, I asked my daughter if she wanted to go and
5
with her. She said, "Yes, I don’t want her to be
6
,"and then took her breakfast to sit beside her friend. I watched her
7
her food and talk to the little girl.
Walking back to my car I was very
8
to know that my little girl had a kind
9
. When I got home last night, I asked her how her day had been. She said that her
10
wasn’t sad any more. She was proud to have shared (分享) her
11
with her and played with her all day . I praised my daughter for being such a caring friend and
12
her that I was very proud of her. She
13
, and told me that she didn’t like to see people sad.
I hugged her and told her what a wonderful girl she was.
14
, she said "I’m Daddy’s little girl!" I couldn’t help but smile, and was proud to be her dad. My little girl has
15
me a lot. Because of her I do my best to make people who may be sad smile.

Never before had I imagined I should have the opportunity to live with so many girls.Would they
1
such a single “Hi” from me? I was about to greet my new roommates,
2
they did not seem to have the same
3
attention that I had. They just dealt with their own
4
, sorting out their clothes, and making arrangements for their university life. Thus tranquility(宁静)
became the
5
atmosphere in the dormitory.
To my surprise,
6
such a situation,I did not feel a sense of
7
.With time going on,we got to know each other deeper.I was
8
to find that in deep soul we all had great dreams and belonged to the same
9
.
However,not long before the
10
was disturbed by my own upset of mind for study pressure. What I was
11
about seemed to have
12
to do with them and what they were doing and talking about seemed so far away from me.However, one incident changed my
13
and made me treasure this kind of
14
better and more confident in our friendship.
One day, when I was leaving the teachers’ office,it was in complete silence and frightening
15
.At my dormitory gate,I was startled (使惊奇)to find there still
16
a little light glimmering in the darkness,so faint but yet so clear.Just under the
17
of the light,I went to the room without any difficulty. They were in sound sleep, leaving the
18
ight on in the calm world.Tears rolled down my cheeks.
I know
19
that we all like tranquility, both in environment and in our mind.It is the care that
20
all the misunderstandings and unpleasantness.

After the earthquake hit northeast Japan on March 11, many moving stories that I saw with my own eyes happened around me.
I had to walk home since all the
1
had stopped after the earthquake. On my way home I
2
an old lady at a bakery shop(面包店) who was giving out free bread, which made my heart
3
. A man was holding a sign(招牌) that said, “Please use our
4
.” He was
5
his house for people who were homeless to have a rest .
My friend wanted to
6
others. He stood in the cold with a sign “If you’re okay with a motorcycle, I will
7
you to your house.” And then I saw him take one gentleman home, all the way to a faraway place!
Then next day I drove to
8
my car with gas. There is a lack (缺乏) of
9
now after the quake and many gasoline stations are either closed or have very
10
lines. I got
11
, since I was behind 15 cars. Finally, when it was my
12
, the man smiled and said, “
13
this bad situation after the quake , we are only giving $30 worth gas to each person. Is that all right?” “
14
. I’m just glad that we are all able to
15
with each other .” I said. His smile gave me so much comfort.
I saw a man at the evacuation (疏散) center burst into
16
when people brought food to him. It was the first time in three days that food was brought to their center. However, after he wiped the tears, his next
17
surprised me. “I am very
18
that we are provided with food. But people in the city next to us haven’t
19
any food at all. Please go to that center as well.” And when hearing that, I realized there is a bright future on the other side of this terrible

When I was a teenager I volunteered to work at the water station at a 10,000m race. My job was to
1
water to the runners. I remember being so
2
to see all the different kinds of people who passed by and grabbed a cup of water. Some ran past, some walked past and a few wheeled past. I saw so many types of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too! So the next year I
3
up for the race.
That first 10,000m race was quite an experience. I jogged, I walked, I jogged and I walked
4
, I didn’t know if I could finish. Then came a defining (决定性)
5
.
At one point near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me, very, very fast, and I felt
6
because I was 50 years younger than he but I couldn’t even keep up with him. I felt
7
for a second.
But then I realizedsomething. He was running his race and I was running mine. He had
8
abilities, experience, training and goals for himself. I had mine. Remember my
9
was only to finish.
After a minute, it
10
me that this was a lesson I could draw from. I learned something about myself in that moment. I turned my embarrassment into
11
.
I decidedthat I would not give up on running races. In fact, I would run even more races and I would learn how to train and prepare
12
and one day I would be one of those 70-year-old persons who were still running. As I crossed the finish line, I was proud of my accomplishment. In life we all have those moments where we
13
ourselves to others. It’s only natural . Don’t allow those moments to
14
you. Turn them into motivation and let them inspire you. With the proper preparation and training, you can improve your result to
15
anything you want in life.

Are you a man or a mouse? When people ask this question they want to know whether you think you are a
1
person or a coward (懦夫). But you will never really know the answer to this question
2
you are tested in real life. Some people think they are brave, but when they come face to face with real
3
, they act like cowards. Others think of themselves as cowards, but when they meet danger, they act like heroes.
Lenny had always thought of himself as a
4
person. He got worried before examinations. He worried about his job and health. All he wanted in life was to be safe and healthy. Then on January 15th, 2002, a plane crashed into the Potomac River in Washington. Lenny happened to see a woman in the ice-cold water. He did not feel afraid. He
5
very calm and did a very dangerous thing. He jumped into the Potomac,
6
to the woman, and kept her head
7
the water. Seventy-eight people died that day. Thanks to Lenny, it was not
8
.
When you are in a very dangerous situation and feel afraid, the body automatically(自动地) produces a chemical called adrenalin in the blood. With adrenalin in the blood system, you actually feel stronger and stronger and are
9
to fight or run away. However, when you are terrified greatly, the body can produce too much adrenalin.
10
this happens, the muscles become very hard. You are then paralyzed (麻木) with fear. This is why when we are extremely frightened, we sometimes say we are “petrified”. This word
11
a Greek word “petros”, which means “stone”. We are
12
frightened that we become stonelike.

Some drugs are
5
when your body has a problem, as with disease—causing bacteria. Then someone may give you aspirin to keep your temperature from going too
6
or some penicillin (青霉素)
7
it stops the growth of some kinds of bacteria.
8
, all drugs are really poison,
9
if you take too much, so you must always use them
10
.
Why do some people take drugs like cocaine? For a little while they seem to make you feel better, or happier. But
11
their effects have
12
, your body has to pay an extra
13
to get back to normal. That makes you want to get
14
of the drug.
Drugs like cocaine have their special effects because they act as
15
for your nervous system. They cut off some of your nerve pathways and take away some of your senses and your
16
. They make you want always more. And just a little too much can even
17
nerves to your heart and stop its beating
Many of us worry about the
18
around us and what pollution does to us. How about your internal environment and what goes on
19
you? You control that all by yourself in what you put into your
20
. Most drugs are pollutants. You would not want pollutants in the air and water around you. Why would you want pollutants in your body?

here for the last 10 years and I love my job.” The businessman was surprised and asked, “Why have you stayed here for ten years, and why do you like your job
6
much?” The lady said, “Because I am doing something good for my
7
.” The businessman found this interesting. He asked, “Why?” The lady said, “As most of our customers are
8
, they spend foreign currency(货币) here. So our country has a lot of money and becomes richer. People who are happy with our service will
9
more often and spend more money in our country.”
Surprised by her
10
, the businessman thanked her. After returning to his own country he worked hard to introduce the same attitude (态度) to his workers, and today his company is one of the best companies in the world.

In 1977, a dead author of detective stories saved the life of a 19-month-old baby in a most unusual way. The author was Agatha Christie, one of the most successful writers of detective stories in the world.
In June 1977, a baby girl became seriously ill in Qatar, near Saudi Arabia. Doctors were unable to
1
the cause of her illness, so she
2
to London and admitted to Hammersmith Hospital, where specialist help was
3
. She was then only half-conscious(半昏迷) and on the “Dangerously Ill” list. A team of doctors hurried to
4
the baby only to discover that they,
5
, were puzzled by the very unusual symptoms. While they were discussing the baby’s case, a nurse asked to
6
to them.
“Excuse me,” said nurse Marsha Maitland, “
7
I think the baby is
8
from thallium poisoning.”
“
9
makes you think that?” Dr. Brown asked. “Thallium poisoning is extremely
10
.”
“A few days ago, I was reading a novel called A Pale Horse
11
Agatha Christie,” Nurse Maitland explained. “In the book, somebody uses thallium poison, and
12
the symptoms are
13
. They are exactly the same as the baby’s.”
“You’re very observant and you may be right,” another doctor said. “We’11
14
some tests and find out
15
it’s thallium or not.”
The
16
showed that the baby had
17
been poisoned by thallium, a rare metal used in making optical(光学的) glass.
18
they knew the cause of illness, the doctors were able to give the correct treatment. The baby soon
19
and was sent back to Qatar. Inquiries(调查)showed that the poison
20
from an insecticide(杀虫剂)used in Qatar.
